There is some very interesting stories on this exact family that you seek... I got this info from a gentleman about 8 years ago...not sure if the links or email address are still correct. I will look to see if I still have China White-Cotton's obituary. When I started working on Clark's genealogy, I started from a journal made by Clark's cousin (John Hicks) and his aunt and John's mother (China Blanche Cordell Hicks), in 1967. The journal was copyrighted and meant for only close family members to have, but the stories in it are juicy. I am copying an excerpt from it, and you let me know what you think. "John then went to see his correspondent friend, 80-year old Lacy Jeremiah Jackson West. Mr. West is some kin to us but I didn't attempt to untangle it. Mr. West, with gusto, gave a juicy account of Captain White-Cotton's extra-marital alliances and readily reeled off the names of three of six illegitimate children. One was Polly West who married Daniel Chambers. Thus, Polly Chambers, Polly West Chamber's mother was Pharbie (Fairby, short for the Scottish fair barin) West, the wife of Reason West. Capt. White-cotton also had a son by Pharbie West and his name was called Taylor West. Capt. White-Cotton had another daughter, Emeline who was born 1856 (?). Emeline's mother was "Leeanner" (Louanna) Sexton, who married Emanuel Phillips. The daughter, Emeline, married a Foster, thus Emeline Foster. Capt. White-Cotton married and /or co-habited with at least four known women the old-timers said. Bastard sons used his name but not daughters. Lacy West, in talking about Tasmon (Burke) White-Cotton said that Tasmon had a son named Gaines by Rachel Boswell. The boy was illegitimate. All the time Capt. White-Cotton was frisking around with several women he was married to Mary (called Polly) Solomon Owens. But, evidently, he left her for long periods of time and lived with other women. In fact, it is conjectured that China White-Cotton, our grandmother, was the Captain's daughter by Pharbie West and that his wife simply accepted her and raised her as her own daughter. China thought that Polly Chambers was her mother." I don't know if you will read that over and over as I have and with the confusion I have or what. The tree as I have it came from John Hicks, and I have tried to fill in tidbits of info from you and a few others. When you pointed out the dates.... I don't know why I hadn't seen that before... duhhhhh.... I think I am working on too many surnames at the same time.... I am sending another e-mail with an attachment of China White-Cotton's obituary. I think you will find it very interesting. Please let me know what you think.... I was told that she died before 1850 in Campbell Co. TN. She was married to William Soloman Owens. I was also told that her father was David Chambers, born abt. 1725, and died in Boonesborough, KY. David's father was Reynolds Chambers, born abt. 1700 in Scotland. I have Reynolds father as Alexander Chambers. I am not sure about this info. I am wondering if you might have info on these or other family member's. Going back to the beginning of this email, I mentioned Nancy Chambers who married William Solomon Owens. They had a daughter named Mary Solomon Owens, who married William Wayne Whitecotton Sept 25, 1843 in Campbell Co. TN. William and Mary had a daughter named China Whitecotton. China married John Marion Cordell had a daughter named Della Cordell. Della married Barney Benard Byrd abt 1896 in Scott Co. TN. I believe that they were married Dec 24, 1896. Della and Barney moved to Chattanooga, TN after they were married. They had two children there. Clyde Byrd, born 1897, and my maternal grandmother Charlene May Byrd, born 1900. Both Barney and Della died around 1912, give or take a year. My grandmother was sent to live with either a family member or a friend of the family in Wash, D.C.. I never found out what happened to her brother Clyde. I do know that he served in WWI and that he visited his sister Charlene's family. Anyway, I appreciate any help that you can give me. Brenda, Sometimes juicy gossip is just that, gossip. Pherbia Marcum did marry Wayne White Cotton after Reason West was legally declared dead. Reason died during the war and is buried in Bowling Green. Wayne White Cotton had many illegitimate children. The sons always used the name White Cotton or Cotton. The girls weren't allowed to use the name unless he was married to their mother. Wayne married a total of (that we know of) 5 women. It is my understanding that Wayne had his wives raise most of his children. Some say it is sometimes impossible to know who the mother of some of the children were as his wives claimed them. Wayne did have 2 children with Pherbia and they are documented. Polly Marline West is one. Known Children: Houston WHITECOTTON Wayne WHITECOTTON Frederick Goad WHITECOTTON Celina W. When he was alive he stated he was not the son of Wayne White Cotton. Until someone shows ne documentation, I will be General Taylor West, my great, great, grandfather.
