From The Oak Ridger 11 Nov 2005 George Washington Babb, Ina Elizabeth Pierce Hennessee, 80, Bonnie Garren Lee, 90, of Oak Ridge, Arthur Frederick Rupp Philip Wade Smith, 76, a resident of Knoxville, Ronald Carroll, 45, a resident of Oliver Springs, George Washington Babb, born Feb. 22, 1918, died at NHC Health Center on Nov. 9, 2005. George, a native of Loudon, Tenn., was preceded in death by his parents Viola Katherine Snyder and William Christopher Columbus Babb; his brothers, W.C., Robert, Malcolm, William, and Alfred Ray, and sisters Jennie Arlena Vincent, Mary Louise Davis, Clara Francis (Brownie) Swiney; and twin sister, Martha Early. He graduated from Loudon County High School and attended and played football at Tennessee Wesleyan, Tennessee Military Institute, the University of Tennessee, and Southwestern University. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in May 1942 where he served in England and at Normandy, France in the D-Day invasion, and was honorably discharged as 1st Sergeant in October 1945 after receiving a Good Conduct Medal and EAME Service Medal and ETO Service Ribbon. He returned to Loudon before moving to Oak Ridge in 1948 where he worked for 42 years with the Atomic Energy Commission (now known as the Department of Energy). He was a 54-year member of the First United Methodist Church where he served faithfully as an usher and a charter member of the Men's Bible Class. His passion was sports with an emphasis on football. George was a dedicated high school football official with the TSSAA for 40 years and was inducted into the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife, Frankie Jeanette Ridings Babb, to whom he was married for 50 years. He is survived by three daughters, Kathy Woodson and her husband Bob Woodson of Knoxville; Vicki Hall and her husband Bob Hall of Knoxville; Connie Papp and her husband Jeff Papp of Tega Cay, S.C.; his grandchildren, Andrew Thurman, New York, N.Y., Tina Grzep and her husband Chris Grzep, Sarasota, Fla.; Matthew Woodson and his wife, Meredith Woodson; Kristie Fain Rowan and her husband Tim Rowan; Alicia Fain and Fred Hall, all of Knoxville; Joshua Babb Hassler and his wife, Stephanie of Flowery Branch, Ga.; and Kaitlyn Pierson of Tega Cay, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Syndey and Casey Grzep, Ella and Thomas Woodson, Macon and Emma Rowan, Brenleigh and Bishop Hassler. He is also survived by his sister Toni Alsbury of Oregon, and special niece Bettye Gilliland of Knoxville; and sisters- and brothers-in-law, Aileen and Duane Bennett of Oak Ridge, Joe and Nancy Ridings of Knoxville, Linda Ridings of Huntsville, Ala., Clarence Vincent of Chattanooga, and Robert and Helen Ridings of Lake Worth, Fla. Ina Elizabeth Pierce Hennessee, 80, of the Short Creek community near Athens, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at Athens Regional Medical Center. A native of Athens and resident of Oak Ridge for 40 years before moving back to McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late George Lee and Nannie Grant Pierce, and attended Short Creek Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Tennessee Eastman in Oak Ridge and, after retiring, she operated a hat store in Oak Ridge called Paris Hats. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Nora Guffey, Gladys Combs, Ruby Womac, and Opal McKeown; and three brothers, Marvin, T.R. and Ben Pierce. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Ezra Hennessee of Athens, Tenn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Tonya Kay and John Gleason of Knoxville; one son, Edwin Lee Hennessee of Athens; two grandsons, Sam and Matthew Gleason of Knoxville; one sister, Mary Lee Kenney of Cleveland, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home in Athens, Tenn., with the Rev. Bill Walker officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Short Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sam and Matthew Gleason, Jonathan and Charles Pierce, Cliff Swafford, and Bob Oswalt. Bonnie Garren Lee, 90, of Oak Ridge, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, after an extended illness. She was born May 27, 1915, in Polk County, Tenn., the daughter of Lee and Chessie Tilson Garren. She came to Oak Ridge in 1944 with her husband and daughter and worked as a beautician during the 1940s and 1950s. She was a long-time member of Robertsville Baptist Church and a member of the Oak Ridge Chapter No. 390 of the Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by daughter, Bobbie Neal Collier of Oak Ridge; sisters, Roxie Robinson, Beulah Garren and Geneva Baker; and brothers, Homer Garren and Joe Dean Garren. She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Orion C. Lee; two grandsons, Thomas Collier of Oak Ridge, and Bill Collier and wife Caroline of Farragut; two great-grandchildren, Kim Collier and Lee Collier of Farragut; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Estelle Garren of Chattanooga; sister, Marie Johnston of Lupton City; and sisters-in-law, Alda Rymer of Oak Ridge and Wilma Garren of Delano. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews. Arthur Frederick Rupp died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005, at Soddy-Daisy Healthcare in Chattanooga. He was a chemical engineering graduate of Purdue University, where he also served as president of the poetry club. Art joined the Manhattan Project in 1943 at the University of Chicago. As the project expanded, he also served at the Hanford research facility in Richland, Wash., and then at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 30 years. Although he served in many capacities at ORNL such as reactor operations, waste disposal, and maintenance, his passion was creation of the isotope development program which he headed. Arthur is survived by his two sons, Paul and Roger, and two grandchildren, Margaret and Maxwell. Funeral services will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Oak Ridge at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2005. Interment of ashes will follow at the church gardens. Philip Wade Smith, 76, a resident of Knoxville, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005, at St. Mary's Hospice in Halls. He was born Jan. 1, 1929, in Knoxville. Mr. Smith retired after 25 years of service from Rohm & Haas and currently enjoyed working at Wal-Mart in Halls for the last two years as the bicycle man. He was a member of West Haven Baptist Church in Knoxville where he was an active choir member, greeter and deacon. He enjoyed bowling, flea market trading and working with the Powell High Alumni Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Russell and Cassie Jane Widner Smith; brothers, Paul Smith, Gaines Smith and Glenn Smith; and sisters, Christine Gault, Lucille Foster, Eva Hudson and Imogene Smith. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary L. Smith of Knoxville; sons, Wayne Smith and wife, Carla of Knoxville, the Rev. Gary Smith and wife, Cindy of Knoxville; daughter, Brenda Sheets and husband, Tom of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren, Mickey Summerall, Kyria England, Andrea Adams, Laura Beth Christian, Phillip Smith, and Eric Smith; great-grandchildren, Rebekah Summerall, Sarah Summerall, Reagan Adams, Ayden Adams, and Camden Christian; brothers, J. W. Smith of Knoxville and David Smith of Knoxville; sisters, Martha Ann Wolfenbarger of Powell, Ruth Latham of Knoxville, and Faye Smith of Powell; and many loved nieces, nephews and extended family members.
