    2. From The Oak ridger 30 Nov 2005 George Cullen Battle Jr., 84, Thomas Carra Bright, 62, Jess Wiggins Burden, 88, of Rockport, Texas, formerly of the Claxton Robert J. Kedl, age 76, of Knoxville, Mr. John Edward Craven Sr., age 81, Rosalie Jackson, 85, of Oak Ridge, George Cullen Battle Jr., 84, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday night, Nov. 27, 2005, at home in Oak Ridge, Tenn. George was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. George C. Battle of State Park, S.C., and his four siblings, Sally Battle, Dr. William C. Battle, John C. Battle and Elizabeth (Betty) Gilbert. George graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and pre-law in 1942 and with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry in 1949. He joined the Navy in June 1942 and served as the ship's captain of a small tugboat in the South Pacific Theater. He retired as a lieutenant from the Navy in 1946. He worked at the Hawaiian Sugar Plantation Association in Honolulu, Hawaii, for five years as a chemist. In January 1956, he started at Union Carbide at K-25 as a chemist; two years later he transferred to X-10 to the technical information department. He edited technical papers, books, environmental reports, etc. He retired from Martin Marietta in September 1988. He loved people, music, jokes, square dancing, bridge, crossword puzzles and musicals. He had sung in his high school and college choruses and for a short time in a barbershop quartet. Animals of all kinds were his delight - dogs and cats were tops. His children came first and his grandchildren were a close second. He is survived by Connie, his beloved wife of 54 years, and their two cats, Aldo and Mischief; their son, Buck Battle, his wife Lily and their son, George IV, of Salt Lake City, Utah; their daughter, Anne Battle Haddock, her husband Bill and their daughter, Valorie, of Escondido, Calif.; and their daughter, Betsy Battle Lybrand, her husband Mark, and their children, Nick, Lindsay and Blythe of Columbia, S.C. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law. He has several distant cousins on Edisto Island. Following his wishes, his body was cremated and his remains will be buried next to his sister, Betty, on Edisto Island. There will be a celebration of his life at the Oak Ridge Public Library Auditorium on Wednesday, Nov. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, George wished that donations be made to the Sheltered Animals Rescue Group (SARG), 124 Newell Lane, Oak Ridge TN 37830, or Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society, 2343 Hwy. 174, Edisto Island, S.C. 29438. Arrangements by Cremation Options, Inc., in Knoxville. Thomas Carra Bright, 62, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, after a courageous battle against leukemia. He was born Nov. 9, 1943, in Chattanooga, Tenn., to the late James Roderick and Margrett Dunn Bright. He attended the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, where he majored in biology. Tom then went on to complete a degree in pharmacy at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. In 1987, Tom and wife Karen, also a pharmacist, opened Apple Discount Drugs in Clinton, Tenn., an Independent, hometown drugstore that has since become a beloved fixture in the community. Tom was a member of Faith Promise Church of Knoxville where he served as a small group leader, holding Bible studies in his home. He was also a board member of the American Pharmacy Cooperative. When able to, Tom enjoyed playing golf, fishing, boating, and spending time with his loved ones. Tom's family and friends will remember him for his laid-back personality, quiet strength and tender heart who often helped those less fortunate than himself. His loving memory will be continued by his wife, Karen of Oak Ridge; his daughters, Emily and Lauren Bright of Oak Ridge; son, Kevin Bright of Knoxville; daughter, Kellie Frazier and husband Tom of Knoxville; daughter Becky Bright of Nashville; step-daughter, Kristi Newton and husband Daniel of Clinton; step-daughter, Lindsay George of Knoxville; granddaughter Vivian Newton of Clinton; brother, Don Bright and wife Judy of Chattanooga; brother, Jim Bright and Maureen of Auburn, Ala.; and sister, Nancy Bright-Miller of Chattanooga. Friends and family may gather Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Holly Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. Dr. Chris Stephens will officiate. Funeral services to immediately follow. Interment will be Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Patrick Bright, nephew; Donnie Bright, nephew; Cary Miller, nephew; Tom Frazier, son-in-law; Early Phillips, longtime friend; and Jay Insell, co-pharmacist and friend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, www.leukemia.org. The family would like to especially thank Dr. John Foust and the staff of the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge for their dedication and kindness. Jess Wiggins Burden, 88, of Rockport, Texas, formerly of the Claxton community, born April 5, 1917, passed away Nov. 22, 2005. He was preceded in death by his son, John Clark Burden. Jess was a 1941 graduate of Berea College in Kentucky, with a bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry and math. He worked on the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge from 1942 to 1945. He completed the remainder of his career in Health Physics at Oak Ridge National Laboratory with retirement in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Leona Burden of Rockport, Texas; son Earl and wife Linda Burden of Tulsa, Okla.; daughter, Shirley Burden McLaughlin of Asheville, N.C.; daughter, Mary Joyce Burden VanWechel and husband Steve of Portland, Ore.; and daughter, Jane Burden Krueger and husband Darryl of Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Christopher Burden of Rockport, Texas, Monica Burden Burgin of Birmingham, Ala., Joseph, Makayla and Jessica VanWechel of Portland, Ore., and Deanna Green Hopkins of Greenville, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Ash and Kai Burden of Rockport, Texas, and John Blake Burgin of Birmingham, Ala. Mr. Burden and his wife, Leona, recently moved to Rockport, Texas, to live with his grandson, Chris and Tonia Burden. Previously, they had lived in the Claxton community of Anderson County for 60 years, during which time their lives were enriched by their many wonderful neighbors, friends in the Knoxville area, and professional colleagues in Oak Ridge. Mr. Burden will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The family received friends on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Woodhaven Funeral Home, Edgemoor Road, with the funeral service at 3 p.m. Burial followed in the adjacent Woodhaven Memorial Gardens. Robert J. Kedl, age 76, of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, at Colonial Hills Nursing Home.He was of the Roman Catholic faith. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a chemical engineer with ORNL for over 30 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Margaret Kedl. Survivors include his sons, Michael Kedl of Maryville, and William Kedl of Evergreen, Colo.; and his former wife, Mary Kedl. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005 at Smith Mortuary in Maryville. The family and friends will assemble for graveside service and interment at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with Father Alex Waraska officiating. Smith Mortuary in Maryville is handling the arrangements. Mr. John Edward Craven Sr., age 81, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, in Greensboro, N.C. Mr. Craven was Pastor Emeritus of Oak Ridge Alliance Church. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the church. Rosalie Jackson, 85, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
