From The Oak Ridger 21 Nov 2005 Carl Tate Brock, 88, of Oak Ridge, Rachel Anne Sample Cooper, 77, Charles Edward Helfenberger, 83, of Oak Ridge, Vera Bethena Robbins, 91, of Clinton, Jill Lynnette Cross Southern, 47, of Powell and formerly of Oak Ridge, Ernest Byrd, 84, of Clinton, Helen Irene Graham, 84, of Gainesville, Va., formerly of Clinton, Carl Tate Brock, 88, of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born July 11, 1917, in Morgan County, Tenn., to the late William Riley Brock Sr. and Susie Jane Gann Brock. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters. He served as a deputy sheriff in Morgan County in the 1930s, serving under his father while he was sheriff. He came to Oak Ridge in 1947 and began to work for the Department of Energy. Mr. Brock retired from the Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge (Department of Energy), in 1986 as a quality assurance inspector after 38 years. He was a veteran of World War II and received the Good Conduct Medal. He also was a member of the military police and was placed at President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Hyde Park residence to guard. He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples) since 1950. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia L. Brock of Oak Ridge; and daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy Lynn Glass and husband Kenneth Dee of Oak Ridge, Vivian Sue Foster and husband Larry Steven of Lexington, Ky., and Pamela Christine Baker and husband Joe Burl Baker Jr. of Oak Ridge. Mr. Brock is also survived by eight grandchildren, Sharon Emily Glass Hudson and husband Matthew Lanson Hudson, Ginger Kathleen Glass, Dorothy Suzanne Glass Parker and husband David Stephen Parker, Melanie Sue Foster Seaver and husband William Edwin Seaver, Michelle Annette Foster Emmert and husband Robert Luke Emmert, Monica Leigh Foster Schmieder and husband Lance David Schmieder, Haleigh Elizabeth Baker and Holden Tate Baker; five great-grandchildren, Hannah Grace Hudson, Joshua Fisher Hudson, Caroline Elizabeth Hudson, Katherine Grace Seaver, and Robert Luke Emmert Jr. Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Russell and the Rev. Roy Ladd officiating. Interment will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Rachel Anne Sample Cooper, 77, beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005. She was born in Johnson City, Tenn., on Oct. 10, 1928. Mrs. Cooper graduated from Morristown High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in home economics at the University of Tennessee. She taught home economics in St. Cloud, Fla., and Jefferson Jr. High School in Oak Ridge until she was married to Colonel William L. "Perk" Cooper Jr. in 1953 and had four children. They moved to Albany, Ga., and numerous Air Force Bases, and then back to Clinton where they have resided since 1979. She was a member of the First Families of Tennessee and past president of the Air Force Wives Club. She was an active member of numerous service and social organizations in Clinton. These included the Memorial United Methodist Church Altar Guild, The Timely Topics Club, The Wednesday Club, and The Garden Club, among others. Nationally, she was a life member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Society. She was a devoted and beloved wife of 52 years, mother, friend, and unsung hero, the tie who bound her family together. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maynard Lee and Edith Lillian Brown Sample. Survivors include her husband, William L. Cooper Jr. of Clinton; sons, William L. Cooper III and wife Nancy Tabor of Knoxville, and Tim Charles Cooper and wife Denise Kidd of Memphis; daughters, Anne Edith Cooper Lovain of Knoxville and Amy Katheryn Cooper of Chicago; brother, Charles M. Sample and wife Peggy McBride of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Rachel K. Raley, Caroline A. Lovain, Kristofer T. Cooper, Abby T. Cooper of Knoxville, and Kathryn R. Cooper of Memphis. The family will have a private burial Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005, at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Her memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005, at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Thomas and the Rev. Dean Taylor officiating. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of all arrangements. Charles Edward Helfenberger, 83, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born July 25, 1922, in Harriman, the son of Edward and Minnie Silvey Helfenberger. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. Mr. Helfenberger retired in 1984 from Union Carbide Corp/Y-12, where he was an outside machinist. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a 50-year member of Faith Masonic Lodge No. 756. Mr. Helfenberger was an avid landscaper and thoroughly enjoyed attending and participating in area flea markets. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Robert Whitaker Helfenberger, who died Dec. 12, 2004. He is survived by a son, David Helfenberger and wife Shelley of Morristown; daughters, Diane Clark and husband Randy of Knoxville, and Deborah H. Sumner and husband Jim of Kingston; brother, Forrest H. Helfenberger and wife Betty of Springfield, Va.; sisters, Alene Miller of Oak Ridge, and Evelyn Hicks of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren, Ryan Helfenberger of Morristown, Andrew Clark of Knoxville, and Christopher Clark and wife Michelle and great-grandchild, Keenen Clark, all of Cumming, Ga. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, at 8 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Bobby Mullins officiating. Graveside services are Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Vera Bethena Robbins, 91, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. She was a member of Sinking Springs United Methodist Church. Her hobbies were quilting and flower and vegetable gardening. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, John David "Red" Robbins; grandson, David Allen Robbins; parents, James Brice and Rosa Apperson Wallace; and by 11 brothers and sisters. Survivors include her daughters, Bethea Giles and husband Samuel of Clinton, Mary Lou Bolton and husband Charles of Atlanta, Ga., and Cheryl Hyslop and husband Thomas of Milwaukee, Wis.; sons, Lawrence Bryan "Larry" Robbins and wife Brenda of Dayton, Texas, Terry Lee Robbins and wife Wanda of Murfreesboro, and John David Robbins Jr. of Oak Ridge; sister-in-law, Hazel Wallace of Clinton; daughter-in-law, Lou Disney Robbins of Clinton; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; caregivers, Sandra Parker, Tanna Mellard and Misty Lewis; several nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. Jill Lynnette Cross Southern, 47, of Powell and formerly of Oak Ridge, died suddenly Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville. She was born June 1, 1958, in Rossville, Ga., the daughter of Kenneth and Joyce McDaniel Cross. Mrs. Southern worked for many years as a waitress until her health began to fail. Her family said she thoroughly enjoyed life, music and animals, especially her cats. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Southern, who died March 3, 2005. She is survived by a daughter, Jocelyn Roberts of Knoxville; step-daughter, Jessica Southern of Oak Ridge; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nan and Hollis Southern of Oak Ridge; half-sister, Suzie Howard; and nieces, Lindsey and Heather Blair, all of Cookeville; and special friend, Mike Karr of Powell. A graveside service will be held on Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary.
