HELFENBERGER, CHARLES EDWARD - 83, of Oak Ridge, RUSSELL, THELMA JEAN - age 58 of Andersonville, BAILEY, HONEST AL - age 42 of Powell, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at the Parkwest Hospital after a long illness. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Joe T. and Rosie Bailey; and his brother, Leon Bailey. He is survived by: his son, James Bailey of Anderson Co.; and his daughters, Rosie and Barbara Bailey of Anderson Co. and Kim and Rebecca Bailey of Knox Co.; 3 grandchildren; 6 brothers; and 2 sisters; a very special friend, Angie Davis. BYRD, ERNEST DOUGLAS - age 84 of Clinton, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday morning, November 20, 2005 at his home. He was a member of Clinton First Baptist Church. Dear to Ernest's heart was his time spent in the Smoky Mountains, with the Civilian Conservation Corps Cades Cove and his biannual trips to Townsend Spring and Fall Festival where he loved to share his experiences. He served in Italy during World War II with the Army Air Force. Ernest is preceded in death by: parents, Noah and Florence Byrd; brothers, James and Lawrence Byrd; sisters, Reba Hedrick, Dena Jane Meinnen and Lois Smith. COOPER, RACHEL ANNE SAMPLE - age 77, beloved wife, mother, and friend passed away Saturday, November 19, 2005. She was born in Johnson City, Tennessee on October 10, 1928. Mrs. Cooper graduated from Morristown High School and earned a B.S. Degree in Home Economics at the University of Tennessee. She taught Home Economics in St. Cloud, Florida and Jefferson Jr. High School in Oak Ridge until she was married to Colonel William L. "Perk" Cooper, Jr. in 1953 and had four children. They moved to Albany, Georgia and numerous Air Force Bases, and then back to Clinton where they have resided since 1979. She was a member of the First Families of Tennessee and past president of the Air Force Wives Club. She was an active member of numerous service and social organizations in Clinton. These included the Memorial United Methodist Church Altar Guild, The Timely Topics Club, The Wednesday Club, The Garden Club, among others. Nationally, she was a life member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Society. She was a devoted and beloved wife of 52 years, mother, friend, and unsung hero, the tie who bound her family together. She is preceded in death by: her parents, Maynard Lee and Edith Lillian Brown Sample. Survivors: husband, William L. Cooper, Jr. of Clinton; sons, William L. She was a member of Hinds Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother "granny", and was active in the Anderson County Fair Association during the 1970's and 1980's. HELFENBERGER, CHARLES EDWARD - 83, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, November 18, 2005 at the Methodist Medical Center. He was born July 25, 1922 in Harriman, the son of Edward and Minnie Silvey Helfenberger. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the US Army. Mr. Helfenberger retired in 1984 from Union Carbide Corp/ Y-12 where he was an outside machinist. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a 50- year member of Faith Masonic Lodge #756. Mr. Helfenberger was an avid landscaper and thoroughly enjoyed attending and participating in area flea markets. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his wife, Janie Robert Whitaker Helfenberger, December 12, 2004. He is survived by: son, David Helfenberger and wife Shelley of Morristown; daughters, Diane Clark and husband Randy of Knoxville and Deborah H. Sumner and husband Jim of Kingston; brother, Forrest H.
