>From the Oak Ridger 13 Jan 2006 Dr. Robert C. Bernstorf Sr. Trousdale A. Lewis, of Oak Ridge, Clyde Lee Long, age 91, of Oliver Springs, Donnie Ross Massengill, age 56, a resident of Oak Ridge, formerly of Coalfield, Winnie Elnora "Sudie" Lawson Stout, age 90, Dr. Robert C. Bernstorf Sr. went to be with the Lord on Jan. 11, 2006, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice in Knoxville after a battle with cancer. Dr. Bernstorf was born in Bloomington, Ind., on April 7, 1949. He graduated from Meharry Medical College in 1976 and worked in emergency rooms in Nashville, Athens, and Harriman before becoming the medical director of the K-25 facility in Oak Ridge. He was board certified in emergency medicine, family practice and occupational medicine. He was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville. Bob was a devoted husband, loving father, avid fisherman, and consummate outdoorsman. He was well-loved and will be sadly missed by family, peers, and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. E. Cranston Bernstorf, and is survived by his mother, Eileen Bernstorf of Brentwood, Tenn., his loving wife, Kathy Tate Bernstorf, sons Senior Airman Robert C. Bernstorf Jr. and Craig A Bernstorf, step-daughter Jessica Teeter, devoted sister Linda Bernstorf and husband Richard Sullivan, brothers Dr. Steve Bernstorf and wife Carol, Jim Bernstorf and wife Brenda, and grandson Kaiden D. Bernstorf; nieces and nephews, Karen, Matt, David, Mark, Heather, Julie, Jill; and many well-loved friends. Lewis, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following a valiant battle with cancer. He was born April 13, 1937, in Knoxville, where he grew up. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lavelle Lawrence Lewis, and his parents, Trousdale and Myrtle Carrouth Lewis. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, SueAnne Blair Lewis, as well as cousins Betty Garrett of Spartanburg, S.C., Wilma Dempsey and her husband A.C. of Piedmont S.C., and Fred Carrouth and his wife Sandra of Silver Spring, Fla. Other survivors include mother-in-law Elizabeth R. Blair, brother-in-law B.R. Blair and his wife Mary Charles of Cleveland, Tenn., and two nephews and their families. He is also survived by his long-time friend Lester D. Hulett of Oak Ridge. Mr. Lewis was active in the United Church Chapel on the HilI. As a boy he was interested in ham radio operations and at 16 was the youngest person to attain a ham radio engineer's license. In his youth he worked with several local radio stations and was among the first transmitting engineers for Knoxville television broadcast. He was a talented student of electrical engineering and received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the University of Tennessee, where he contributed to the development of modern scanning radar sources that do not require mechanical motion. He also completed the Nuclear Reactor School of the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies (ORINS). Mr. Lewis started work in the Instrumentation and Control Division of ORNL in 196O. His first assignment was as a field engineer to the Solid State Physics Division and other projects. He also worked in computer controlled instrumentation systems. His co-workers and friends recognized him as a skilled problem-solver, conversant with the most modern instrumentation of the times. In 1964, he was assigned as liaison engineer to Varian Associates in Palo Alto, Calif., where he spent almost three years collaborating in the design and construction of the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator (ORELA). Mr. Lewis returned to Oak Ridge from California and assisted with the installation and startup. The remainder of his professional career was spent providing oversight and improvement to ORELA. As chief of operation, he set records in run time and intensity of output. He worked also as a special consultant to the Hollifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility. Mr. Lewis is credited with over 100 technical publications on particle acceleration and particle beam monitoring, and he holds at least one patent. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at 2 p.m. at United Church Chapel on the Hill with interment following in the Memorial Garden of the Church. The Rev. Boyd Carter will officiate. A reception will follow at the church. The family requests that memorial gifts be to the Chapel on the Hill Preservation Fund of the United Church or the Salvation Army. Clyde Lee Long, age 91, of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at the Lifecare Center of Morgan County. He was born Oct. 14, 1914, in Waynesville, Mo., moving to Tennessee in 1947. He was a United States Army veteran who served his country during World War II. He retired from the city of Oak Ridge and was also a retired carpenter and construction worker. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances M. Long; parents, Leslie and Bertha Alexandria Long; and also by seven brothers and one sister. Survivors include his sisters, Alma Luter of South Roxana, Ill., Velma Dispensa of Amity, Ark.; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family and special friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs. Burial and graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at Anderson Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Matthew Jones officiating. Donnie Ross Massengill, age 56, a resident of Oak Ridge, formerly of Coalfield, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born Aug. 11, 1949, in Oliver Springs, moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of 20 to work at the Zumbiel Box Company. He was employed there for 33 years, retiring as a supervisor. Mr. Massengill moved back to Tennessee in 2003, living out the remainder of his life in Oak Ridge. He enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, and visiting and selling items at different flea markets and auctions. Survivors include his daughter, Wendy Daniel and husband, Dax, of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandsons, Jarred Daniel of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Ethan Daniel of Cincinnati, Ohio; his parents, James Paul and Lois Kirkland Massengill of Coalfield; his brother, James Owen Massengill and wife, Sharon, of Harriman; his aunt, Vivian Kirkland of Oliver Springs; and several extended family members and friends. Winnie Elnora "Sudie" Lawson Stout, age 90, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, in Cookeville, Tenn. Born Nov. 27, 1915, in Jackson County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Robert Lee and Carrie Keith Lawson. She was a homemaker and a member of Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ in Cookeville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Austin Stout; five brothers; and one sister. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Kelley Stout Sr. and Joy Stout of Oak Ridge, Adriel Lee and Nancy D. Stout of Cookeville, and Ronnie Hubert and Freda Stout, also of Cookeville; six grandchildren, Gayle Stout Jones and husband, Larry, of Oak Ridge, Ginger E. Stout of Knoxville, Robert Kelley Stout Jr. of Claxton, and Cindy Stout Key and husband Randell, Rhonda Stout, and Rachael Stout Sutton and husband Daniel, all of Cookeville; eight great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; several special friends; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, in the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home in Cookeville, with the Rev. David Vaughn and Dycus Carter officiating. Burial was at the Cookeville City Cemetery.
