From The Oak ridger 19 Jan 2005 Stella Elizabeth Bender, age 90, of Clinton, Adeline Amelia Gilbert Lillard, Mary Lou Lopez, age 60, of Wartburg, Alice Olszewski, of Oak Ridge, Hollis L. Ashburn, 89, of Oak Ridge, Stella Elizabeth Bender, age 90, of Clinton, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at the Life Care Center of Morgan County. She was a member of Cherry Bottom Baptist Church and was born Sept. 8, 1915. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Bender; parents, George and Lutie Sanders Ruth; and three sisters and two brothers. Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Bender Cooter and husband Larry of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, with funeral services following in the chapel with the Rev. Kenny Bean officiating. Her burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grandview Memorial Garden in Clinton. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of all arrangements. Adeline Amelia Gilbert Lillard, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at Jefferson County Nursing Home. She was born July 22, 1908, in Ocoee, Tenn., to John Alderson Gilbert and Nora Lavinia Gilbert. She lived most of her adult life in Jefferson City. She graduated from Polk County High School in 1927, in Benton, Tenn., and taught in a one-room schoolhouse. She married Wallace "Ras" Lillard Nov. 11, 1927, in Polk County. While she and her husband lived in Athens, she attended Tennessee Wesleyan College. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 10, 1988. In 1942, she and her husband moved from Florence, Ala., to Jefferson City for a job with TVA. She belonged to First Baptist Church, Jefferson City, since 1943 and was very active in the Seniors' group up until the time she entered a nursing home in January 2004. In 2001, she moved to Darby House Assisted Living Community in Jefferson City, where she spent three happy years. Floral arrangements was a hobby that she shared with different church and community groups. An active member of the Jefferson County Home Demonstration Club, she entered floral arrangements for years at the county fair and won a shoe box full of ribbons. One entry took "Best of Show." At age 18, she joined the Eastern Star in Polk County and became a Worthy Grand Matron during her years in the organization in Jefferson City. She attended the Jefferson City Seniors' Center where she served as vice president. Also, she was a charter member in 1947 of the Modern Literary Book Club. In 1995 she joined The Daughters of the American Revolution and was a member of the "First Families of Franklin" through her ancestor Nicholas Fain who dwelt in the State of Franklin 1784-1788. When her children were young, she served as room mother for many years. For 35 years she worked for Tinsley & Clifton Jewelers in Jefferson City as a salesperson. Later, she worked for Miller's Department Store in Knoxville in the china department. Adeline is survived by her children, Harry Lillard of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Judith Lillard Hughes and husband Tom, of Peachtree City, Ga., and John Wallace Lillard and wife, Gloria, of South Daytona, Fla. She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Gilbert Davis, of Conasauga, Tenn., and Alice Gilbert Sheidler, of Erwin, Tenn. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Lee Anne Lillard Hitch and her husband, Robb, of Abington, Va., Joy Lillard of Knoxville, Tenn., Anne Hughes Houston and her husband, Dave, of Peachtree City, Ga., Lisa Hughes Gylsen and her husband, Ben, of Churchill, England, Brian Wallace Lillard and his wife, Marta, of St. Augustine, Fla., and Amy Adeline Lillard, of Jacksonville, Fla. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Timothy Fox and Jamie Fox, of Knoxville, Tenn. (great-great-grandchild Isaac Fox); Katie Houston, Emily Houston and Garrett Houston of Peachtree City, Ga.; Caroline Lillard of St. Augustine, Fla., and Kira Gylsen of England. She was a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother and sister who loved and cherished her family. Family visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Farrar Funeral Home, Broadway Boulevard in Jefferson City. Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Farrar Funeral Home, with burial at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Mary Lou Lopez, age 60, of Wartburg, passed away Wednesday morning, Jan. 18, 2006, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was formerly of Towanda, Pa., and had recently moved to this area. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Mary Lou is survived by her two daughters, Dottie Phillips of Wartburg, and Jennifer Rowe of Pennsylvania; sons, Jamie and wife, Jen Rowe, and Jackie Rowe, all of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Cindi Hawn, Anthony Hawn, Jamie Rowe, Jacob Rowe, and Jayce Rowe; sisters, Shirley, Pat, Sally, Marie, and Carol; brother, Butch; and numerous other family members and friends. A memorial service will be held in Pennsylvania at a later date. Jackson-Oliver Mortuary in Oliver Springs is serving the Lopez family. Alice Olszewski, of Oak Ridge, died on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was born in Shenandoah, Pa., and was the daughter of Walter and Alice Wiskerski. Early in World War II, Alice was employed by Brewster Aircraft in Long Island, N.Y. While in New York, in 1942 she met and married Edward Olszewski, also of Shenandoah. She and Ed moved to Oak Ridge in April, 1945, and were lifelong residents. Alice and Ed attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oak Ridge. In 1957, Alice became leader of Girl Scout Troop 83 at St. Mary's School, and then served as Den Mother for the Cub Scouts there. She remained active at St. Mary's throughout her life. In 1962, Mrs. Olszewski became a charter member of the Ladies of the Elks, serving as president in 1971 and in 1972, and remaining active until the organization disbanded in 2002. In 1972, she and her husband built the Garden Center Greenhouses on Wilberforce Avenue, which they operated until 1982. Alice was an active volunteer at the Oak Ridge Cancer Cupboard, and devoted much of her 70s and 80s to visiting friends at local nursing homes and attending Taoist Tai Chi classes twice a week. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; her brothers Walter, Edward, and Leo Wiskerski of Shenandoah, Pa.; and her sisters, Josephine Smith and Leona Palewicz, also of Shenandoah. She is survived by her sister, Helen Uscilowicz of Mahanoy City, Pa.; her daughters, Frances Olszewski of Seattle and Susan Olszewski and her husband Thomas Kaercher of Plainfield, N.J.; her sons, Bob Olszewski of Oliver Springs and Richard Olszewski of St. Augustine, Fla.; and her two step-granddaughters, Melanie Richmond and Jennifer Richmond of Florida. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews, too numerous to name. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with interment to follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with a rosary to follow at 8 p.m. in the chapel.
