Palmer Jr., of Johnson City, Tenn., Mary Phillips, age 67, of Clinton, John Gaston Smith, age 71, a resident of Livingston, Tenn., Max Ray Stiles, age 64, of Clinton, David Bolling, of Clinton, William C. Brown, age 72, of Knoxville, passed away at St. Mary's Residential Hospice on Jan. 20, 2006. He was a member of St. John Newman Catholic Church in Farragut, Tenn. William and his wife, Jennifer, both were from Elgin, Ill., and moved to Knoxville in 1965. William retired from Johnson & Johnson Co., in 1994 after 30 years of service. He was an avid University of Tennessee supporter and enjoyed a getaway to the beach or warm sunshine by his pool. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Marion Brown. Survived by his loving family: wife, Jennifer L. Brown; son, and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Demaris Brown; daughter, Julie Brown; grandchildren, Analisa, Katelyn and Nicholas Brown. He also leaves extended family members, Nicholas, Marilyn and Norman Lea, James and Kathryn LaMorte, Tricia LaMorte-Bennett, James and Dawn LaMorte, Irene and Harris Williams, Douglas and Jean Lea, Sadie, Maggie, Otto and Camry. A mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel of Highland Memorial, 5315 Kingston Pike, with Father John Dowling, officiant. Arrangements by Highland Memorial Park, Funerals and Cremations. Eddie Cecil Gilliam, age 51, of Oliver Springs, passed away Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born June 24, 1954, in Knoxville, living most of his life in Oliver Springs. He owned and operated Gilliam Excavating for 30 years. Eddie was also a member of Kellytown Baptist Church and a member of the Moose's Lodge of Oak Ridge. He enjoyed spending time with his nephews, playing cards, and working with auto restoration. Survivors include his parents, Earl and Elsie Goodman Gilliam of Oliver Springs; sister, Regina Roberts and husband, Gordon of Clinton; nephews, Tyler and Tanner Roberts of Clinton; and a host of aunts, uncles, special friends and extended family members. The family wishes to thank the staff at Methodist Medical Center and all their friends and relatives for their support during his hospital stay. Mr. Robert "Bob" H. Palmer Jr., of Johnson City, Tenn., died at Johnson City Medical Center on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Johnson City. Mr. Palmer was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Jefferson City, Tenn., and was the son of the late Robert H. Palmer Sr. and Sally Kate Palmer. He attended Carson Newman College where he earned a B.A. degree and East Tennessee State University where he earned an M.A. degree in psychology. Mr. Palmer's contribution to education ranged from being a professor at the University of Tennessee-Martin to Associate Director of Counseling and golf coach at Spartanburg Junior College where he was awarded "Golf Coach of the Year." He also spent 10 years at East Tennessee State University serving as the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Records where he was selected "Outstanding Young Man in America." After Mr. Palmer's tenure at the highest level of education, he entered the real estate development and management field with his expertise lying in the shopping center development area. His work spanned four states: Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, and North Carolina. In North Carolina, he received local and national recognition in the Professional Builders for his development work. In addition to his passion for his careers, he was also an avid golfer. Mr. Palmer is survived by his wife of 28 years, Dianne Gracey-Palmer; one daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Todd Wood of Myrtle Beach, S. C.; three precious granddaughters, Ellyn Kate, Caroline, and Abby Wood; one sister, Margaret Davis of Germantown, Tenn.; one brother, Lyle Palmer of Southaven, Miss.; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Sam and Geneva Gracey of Clinton. The family will receive friends at Tetrick Funeral Services in Johnson City on Monday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. with the funeral immediately following in the chapel with Dr. Ron Murray officiating. Active pallbearers will be Eddie Keller, Todd Wood, Gary Simpson, and Terry Jeffers. Graveside services will be held at Anderson Memorial Gardens in Clinton, Tenn., on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at noon. Officiating in Clinton will be the Revs. Chris Albright and Jerry Holbrook. Mary Phillips, age 67, of Clinton, passed away Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Phillips was a retired payroll secretary with Martin Marietta. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge and enjoyed scrapbooking, arts and crafts. Christmas was her favorite time, and she loved spending time with family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Frank Phillips of Clinton; as well as her sons, George L. Phillips and wife Nancy of Morristown, and Neil Phillips of Clinton. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Heather, Alecia, Lauren, and Alissa Phillips; and by two sisters, Loretta Scott and her husband Don of Oak Ridge, and Debbie Potts of Florida. John Gaston Smith, age 71, a resident of Livingston, Tenn., passed away Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at the Cookeville Regional Hospital following an illness. He was born May 26, 1934, in Clay County, Tenn. He had lived in Livingston for the past two years. Following his graduation from Celina High School in Clay County, he married Betty Sue Copas and joined the United States Air Force. He served his country for four years during the Korean War. Following his discharge from the U.S. Air Force, they moved to Cumberland County, Ky., and started a farm, which later became a hobby that he always enjoyed. In addition to farming, his hobbies included Tennessee Walking Horses and coon hunting. Following the sale of the farm, he became a funeral director and continued in the funeral profession until his retirement. He and his brother, Jimmy Kay Smith, co-founded Livingston Funeral Home in Livingston, Tenn. He later moved to Byrdstown, Tenn., and founded the Byrdstown Funeral Home, which he operated until 1976. After the sale of Byrdstown Funeral Home, he purchased Mt. Pleasant Funeral Home in Harlan, Ky. He lived in Kentucky operating the funeral home for several years after selling the funeral home to his son. Following the sale of Mt. Pleasant he moved back to Tennessee and purchased Martin Funeral Homes in LaFollette and Lake City, Tenn. Following the sale of both the Martin Funeral Homes, he bought Burris Funeral Home in Crossville, operating Burris until his retirement. He was a member of the Livingston Church of Christ, a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association and a former member of the Tennessee and Kentucky Funeral Directors Associations. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lou Juana Smith; by his parents, Haston Smith and Martha R. Nevins Smith; by a brother, Dale Lee Smith; and by two sisters, Jean Teeples and Anna Sue Ellison. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty Sue Copas Smith of Livingston; daughter, Nancy Dyer of Sparta; sons, John G. Smith Jr. of Cookeville, Jimmy Smith and wife, Brenda of Oliver Springs, and Gregory Smith of Livingston; grandchildren, Allen Smith of Cookeville, Ashley Scott of Sparta, Rebekah Smith of Oliver Springs, Britney Smith of Livingston, and Caleb Smith of Livingston; great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Smith, Adian Smith, and Jaden Scott; brothers, Jimmy Kay Smith and wife, Peggy L. of Sparta, Bobby Smith of Allons, and Billy Smith of West Virginia. Max was a member of Steamfitters Local No. 102 in Knoxville and was a retired pipe welder. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Max was preceded in death by his father, Creed J. Stiles; and mother, Virginia L. Stiles. He leaves behind a brother, William "Bill" Stiles and wife Marie of Travelers Rest, S.C.; three nieces, Gina M. Brown of Taylors, S.C., Nancy R. Pinciaro and husband Tony of Taylors, S.C., Sheila R. Vickery and husband Chad of Greer, S.C.; great-nieces and great-nephews, Tommy Brown, Christian Brown, Caroline Brown, Elizabeth Brown, John Brown, Drew Pinciaro, Billy Pinciaro, Laura Pinciaro, Maria Pinciaro, Chase Vickery, and Sophia Vickery; and special friend, Rachel Duncan of Oliver Springs.
