Janice was born on Sept. 17, 1920, in Madrid, Neb. She was raised in the West, mostly in Wyoming. She graduated from Platte Valley High School in Saratoga, Wyo., in 1938, and then earned a B.S. degree in home economics from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo., in 1942. She married George Jamieson, now deceased, on June 15, 1942. George was in the U.S. Army in World War II and came to Oak Ridge to work on the Manhattan Project. Janice joined him in Oak Ridge in 1945, where she remained until the summer of 2005, when health issues forced her to move to Memphis, Tenn., to be near her daughter, Pamela and son-in-law Bob. Over her years in Oak Ridge, she was active in several community and church related activities. In support of her daughters, she participated in the Girl Scouts of America for over 10 years, taking on responsibilities from troop committee chairman to troop leader of the Trailblazer Troop to Camp Whippoorwill staff. From 1964 to 1966, she was a substitute teacher for the Oak Ridge school system. When she was over 50, she joined Oak Ridge's "Swimmin Wimmim" and took up swimming. She was proud of the fact that she could swim a mile. She used her swimming skills to teach basic swimming for the Red Cross from 1975 to 1990. When she was in her early 60s, she was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Instead of letting that get her down, she became actively involved with Oak Ridge's Visual Support Group and learned how to cope with gradually decreasing visual ability. She was secretary of the Visual Support Group from 1982 to 2003. As early residents of Oak Ridge, she and George became members of the "43 Club," a group of people who were participants in the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge and who remained in the area for years afterward. Throughout her years in Oak Ridge, she was active with the First Presbyterian Church. Early on, she was active as a Bible School teacher and in the Presbyterian Women's Organization. For the Presbyterian Womens Organization, she served in various capacities, including treasurer of the Circle, Bible Study leader, Social Education and Action teacher, executive board treasurer, World Service chairman, kitchen chairman, and executive board president. In recent years, she served as the chairman of the Sanctuary Guild. Her interests over the years have included physical fitness and bridge. To practice physical fitness beyond her swimming activities, she went to the Paragon Club to work out for the last 20 years of her life. In this regard, she was ahead of her time in the physical fitness craze. With respect to bridge, she was a member of various bridge groups over the years, where she formed many close and long-lasting friendships. She is survived by daughters, Sharon Harris of Villanova, Pa., and Pamela Jamieson Price of Memphis, Tenn.; granddaughters, Rebecca Price of Washington, D.C. and Bonnie Price of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a sister, Jean Blair of Douglas, Wyo. A service in her memory will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name can be made to Macular Degeneration Research, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871. Bettye Evelyn Goff Rogers, 93, passed away Feb. 10, 2006.
