Carson William Poston, of Andersonville, William Scarbrough, of Clinton, Ruth Cates Baird, 85, of Oak Ridge, was most recently a teacher of Bible and literature in the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning (ORICL). She was for 43 years a public school teacher, but she was first and foremost a life-long student. She died at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Jan. 27, 2006. Born April 23, 1920, in Park Hill, Okla., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Albert Arthur Baird and Bessie Lea Hicks Baird. She began her formal education in the training school of Northeastern State Teachers College in Tahlequah, Okla., where she spent her formative years. Graduating summa cum laude from Carson-Newman College with a bachelor of arts degree, she continued her studies at Vanderbilt University, where she earned a master of arts degree in English. Unwilling to commit herself to the rigorous and confining demands of working toward a doctorate, she assumed responsibility for choosing educational institutions, courses, and professors for graduate work that furthered her own interests. These institutions included George Peabody College for Teachers, Columbia University, Duke, Northwestern, Harvard, the University of Chicago, Oxford, and the University of Tennessee. She contributed to various professional journals, including High School Journal, Journal of Educational Research, Journal of Developmental Reading, and The Tennessee Teacher. She left the classroom for a six-month period in 1943 to distribute blueprints to the field engineers with Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation at Clinton Engineer Works during the construction of the city of Oak Ridge. Her first teaching job in Oak Ridge was third grade at Pine Valley School. After several years she transferred to Oak Ridge High School, where she taught English and served for several years as chairman of the English Department, until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Women Educators, Tennessee Education Association, National Education Association, Oak Ridge Retired Teachers, and First Baptist Church where she taught the Philathea Sunday School class. Any memorials should be in the form of contributions to the library of First Baptist Church, Oak Ridge. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Oak Ridge. Burial will be private at Newcomb Cemetery in Newcomb, Tenn.
