From The Oak Ridger 1 Feb 2006 John Edward "Pete" Brantley, age 83, of Oak Ridge, Garry Arnold Craft, 55, of Knoxville, Dianna Kay McWilliams Oden, 60, of the Rarity Bay community in Vonore, Lillie Bell Wrench Chevis Williams, 83, formerly of Oak Ridge, John Edward "Pete" Brantley, age 83, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Greenmount, Ky., to the late Francis Edward and Laura Mullins Brantley. Mr. Brantley was the oldest of seven children and at an early age worked for the CCC and then enlisted in the Marine Corps to be able to help his parents financially with the rearing of his six siblings. He retired after 20 years' service in the Marines, having served during WWII and the Korean Conflict. After retiring from the military he served as chief of police in London, Ky., and served as pastor of several area missionary Baptist churches in Oak Ridge. He was a Kentucky Colonel and was the civil defense director for the city of Oak Ridge for 14 years. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. Besides his parents, Mr. Brantley was preceded in death by two sisters, Essie Woods and Guilda McCowan, and by one brother, Jack Brantley. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Henry Brantley of Oak Ridge; and his beloved dog, doodlebug. He is also survived by a brother, Ralph Brantley of Grosse Pointe, Mich.; and by two sisters, Eva Allen and Jewel Hibbard, both of Greenmount, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Lawrence Ford officiating. Graveside services will be Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Brantley Family Cemetery in Greenmount, Ky., with full military honors. Garry Arnold Craft, 55, of Knoxville, died on Jan. 31, 2006, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, after a two-year battle with prostate cancer. Garry was born in Oak Ridge on May 21, 1950. He retired as a sales representative with BobCat of Knoxville and was a member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden. He enjoyed four-wheeling, water skiing, and basketball. He was preceded in death by parents, Arnold and Ethelene Craft. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Kathy Smith Craft of Knoxville; children, Matthew Garry Craft and wife, Mary, of Knoxville, Amber Belcher and husband, James, of Lexington, Ky.; brothers, Keith Craft and wife, Janice, of Oak Ridge, Paul Craft and wife, Jane, of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Barbara Renfro and husband, Bart, of Oak Ridge; nieces and nephews, Lisa Adkins and husband, Charlie, Michele Craft, Paula Booze and husband, George, Blake Renfro, Trevor Renfro, Tim Holloway and wife, Jamie, Kim Davis, Clint Smith and wife, Melanie, Erika Cates and husband, Tommy. Other family members include Eileen and Floyd Weaver, Catina Smith, Nancy and Harold Holloway, Russ Smith and Deanna Rohleder; five great-nieces and five great-nephews. Dianna Kay McWilliams Oden, 60, of the Rarity Bay community in Vonore, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at her home. She was born Jan. 25, 1946, in Oak Ridge. Mrs. Oden was a talented artist and decorator and an avid golfer. She was a member of the Rarity Bay Golf and Country Club. Next to her family, her greatest love was her cats, Morris, Rusty and Chancey, who loved her and will miss her tender care. Mrs. Oden was preceded in death by her father, Gene McWilliams. he is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert L. Oden; son, Robert Scott Oden and his wife Lisa and their children Robert Von Oden and Jessica Renee Oden, all of Lawrenceville, Ga.; mother, Nadine McWilliams of Oak Ridge; sisters, Shirley McWilliams Maggert of Wilmington, N.C., and Pat McWilliams Hopkins of Oak Ridge; brother, Monte McWilliams and his wife Sharon of Lenoir City; nephews, Jamie Hopkins of Coronada, Calif., Mark Hopkins of Powell, Shannon Hopkins of Knoxville, Cole Hopkins of Atlanta, Ga., Joey Maggert of Wilmington, N.C.; and nieces, Tina Maggert of Wilmington, N.C., and Courtney McWilliams of Herndon, Va.; sisters-in-law, Shirley Oden Cox and her husband Roger of Clinton, and Martha Oden Scruggs and her husband David of Loudon; brother-in-law, Bill Oden and his wife Shauna of Loudon; several great nephews and nieces, and many friends in Oak Ridge, Vonore, Loudon and Atlanta. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at 7 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Margaret Manning officiating. An on-line guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com. Lillie Bell Wrench Chevis Williams, 83, formerly of Oak Ridge, departed this life on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, in Mesa, Ariz. She was born to the union of the late Henry and Lillie Jamison Wrench on March 13, 1922, in Noxubee County, Miss. She was a member of Mt. Carmel C.M.E. Church in Mississippi and confessed Christ at an early age. When Mrs. Williams moved to Oak Ridge, she reunited with Spurgeon Chapel AME Zion Church in the early 1950s. She was a faithful and very devoted member and served as a class leader for more than 30 years. She also was president of the Deaconess Board and Chaplain of the Lay Council. In addition to her dedication and service to the church, Mrs. Williams participated in many community functions and organizations, including the NAACP and the Civil Rights Movement in the '60s, and she held several offices in the Atomic Chapter No. 13 Order of the Eastern Star. After moving to Mesa, Ariz., she attended Holy Trinity AME Church, pastured by the Rev. J. L. Payne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by son, Nehemiah Chevis and grandson, Eric Robinson, whom she raised during his early years; another grandson, a granddaughter; sisters, Mary Jane Eatman, Mollie Stewart, Jennie B. Ellis; brothers, Henry Wrench, Edward Wrench and U. W. Wrench. She leaves to cherish and remember her life: daughter, Henry Mae Robinson of Los Angeles, Calif.; son, Eddie Chevis of Memphis; devoted nieces and caregivers, Vera Anderson of Oak Ridge and Eutie Gamble of Mesa, Ariz.; devoted grandson, Professor Eddie Chevis of Memphis; four great-granddaughters; five great-grandsons; one great-great-granddaughter; one great-great-grandson; nephews, Jerry (Icie) Wrench of Columbus, Miss., and Isaac Wrench of Cleveland, Ohio, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services are Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Spurgeon Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Ed Schneider officiating. The burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
