"Coal Digger" Walls, age 80, a resident of Oliver Springs, Chester Richmond passed away peacefully, at age 76, on Jan. 25, 2006, at Baptist West Hospital. He had managed five career paths since receiving his doctorate degree in 1958 - the first in biological research at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (he received the E.O. Lawrence award in 1974), the second in science research and development administration (associate director for Biomedical and Environmental Science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1974 to 1990), the third in science education (directed the Science Education program at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1984 through 1994), the fourth as Scholar in Residence for the Associated Western Universities, Inc. (1995 through 1998), and the fifth as an independent consultant (1998 through 2004). He retired from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in January 1995. He held a Scholar in Residence appointment with the Associated Western Universities, Inc. (AWU) from February 1995 through 1998. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna Eugenia Johansson (who was born in Sweden), William Richmond (who was born in Scotland); and son, David Scott. He is survived by his wife, Jean Anderson Richmond, of more than 50 years; and four daughters, Allyson Richmond in Atlanta, Andrea Richmond in Knoxville, Roberta Richmond-Hashemi in Nashville, and Jacqueline Richmond in Maryville; sister, June in Healdsburg, Calif.; and brothers, Bruce Richmond in South Amboy, N.J., and Donald Richmond in Albuquerque, N.M. Chester Richmond died Jan. 29, 2006, at the Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. She moved to Cary, N.C., in 2004 to be near family and resided at Jordan Oaks Retirement Center until early January 2006. Prior to moving to Cary she was a 60-year resident of Oak Ridge, Tenn., where she taught elementary school from 1944 until her retirement in 1979. Following her retirement she traveled and cruised extensively. She was born in Florence, Ala., on April 27, 1914, and lived during her youth in Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi. She was a graduate of the University of Mississippi where she received BA and MA degrees in education. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary sororities for professional educators, and a member of the Oak Ridge, Tenn., and National Retired Teachers Associations. She is survived by three stepchildren, Anita Totter of Jupiter, Fla., John Totter of Plano, Texas, and Lorena Barfuss of Highland, Utah; by three nephews, John Hagan of Cary, N.C., James Smith of Batesville, Miss., and Michael Smith of Gulport, Miss.; by two nieces, Robin Fielder of Abbeville, Miss., and Anna Bloodsworth of Petal, Miss.; and numerous step-grandchildren, great and grand nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Totter, a nationally-recognized scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; by her sister, Rebecca Hagan, formerly of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; two brothers, John Smith of Oxford, Miss., and Morris Smith of Batesville, Miss.; and her parents, James and Lula Smith of Oxford, Miss. She was loved by all who knew her. At her request, her body has been donated for medical and scientific research. A memorial service was held in Cary, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be given to the charity of the donor's choice. Jack D. "Coal Digger" Walls, age 80, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born June 7, 1925, in Coalfield. He was a former deacon and member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Following his graduation from Coalfield High School, Mr. Walls served his country during World War II, in the United States Navy. After being honorably discharged, he worked for a short time for the Union Carbide Corporation. He began his business interest with one coal truck co-owned by his brother, which blossomed into Walls & Coker Trucking and Waco Inc., along with many additional companies and corporations. In 1951, he, along with partners, Verlin E. Coker and William E. "Bud" Walls, founded Walls and Coker Trucking Company Inc. This partnership later established a coal brokerage company, selling coal to TVA and brokering coal to various companies in several states. In addition to the coal brokerage company, the partnership established three real estate companies. They were OSLand Inc., Diamond Hill Inc., and Cherokee Bluff Realty Inc. This partnership with Wilson E. "Dude" Walls and Verldon E. Coker founded Waco Inc., an interstate and highway building company. They built sections of Interstate, 24, 75, 40, and 65 in Tennessee and Kentucky with additional state roads and various other projects. This group of partners, along with other businessmen, owned and operated Oliver Springs Mining Company Inc., Gay Coal Company Inc., Walnut Mountain Coal Company Inc., Volunteer Mining Company Inc., Longwal Inc., and Laco Mining Company, just to name a few. Mr. Walls also owned and operated several other coal companies with many different partnerships, including several Oliver Springs businessmen and Walls family members. With all of the different businesses, he along with other stockholders and partners employed over 1,400 people at one time. Mr. Walls also owned and operated Walls Properties. He was also involved in many real estate holdings including the Hilton Hotel in Knoxville. In later years, he enjoyed raising quarter horses. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Maggie McGlothin Walls; sons-in-law, Roy Daniels and George Edwards; sisters, Susie Ward, Irene Walls and Shirley Walls; brothers, William E. "Bud" Walls, Wilson E. "Dude" Walls, Robert Walls Jr., and George C. Walls. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Adkisson Walls of Oliver Springs; daughters, Debbi Edwards of Oliver Springs, and Darlene Jackson and husband, Brian of Oliver Springs; grandchildren, Jason Daniels, Josh Daniels, Aaron Jackson, and Crystal Jackson; brother, Arnold Walls of Coalfield; sisters, Louise Crowe of Coalfield, and Alma Jones of Coalfield; special friends, Bobby Leach and C. H. Smith, and Jimmy, Brenda and Rebekah Smith; several nieces, nephews, extended family members and special friends. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at Sharp Funeral Home with funeral service following at 8 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Robbie Leach and the Rev. C. J. Holt officiating. Burial and graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.
