From Thew Oak Ridger 3 Oct 2005 Charles "Chuck" Book, 81, Vivian Howell Crisp, 87, of Oak Ridge, Helen Faustine Kuhns, 83, of Oak Ridge, Charles "Chuck" Book, 81, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, after a brief illness at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. An ordained Presbyterian minister born in New Castle, Pa., he retired to Oak Ridge in the late 1980s after a distinguished career in church and public service work to be near his family. He quickly became engaged in many community activities. A lifelong fan of the circus, he taught courses on that subject through the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning, and traveled to circus events around the country. He was a member of the board of directors of Circus Fans of America. He and his wife Connie also organized and led other travel-related ORICL events, most recently to Washington, D.C., for a tour of the nation's capital. During his career, Chuck Book served churches in Louisiana, Virginia, New York, and Tennessee. He trained as a chaplain at Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, and served as chaplain at several area nursing homes during his retirement. He was also active with the Presbytery of East Tennessee. While serving as a stated supply pastor for small churches outside of New Orleans, Book worked 19 years as executive director of the YMCA of Metairie, La. Under his leadership, the YMCA became the leading health, fitness and community service organization for the New Orleans area. Book is survived by his wife Connie, and three children, his son Earl Book and wife Lisa, and their children, Hayden and Evangeline of Helena, Mont.; his daughter, Priscilla Campbell and husband Jim and their daughters, Elise, Amelia and Claire of Oak Ridge; and his daughter, Jill Book of Bethel, Tenn. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge with the Rev. Kara Becker English officiating. The family will receive friends after the service, and the burial will be private. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Vivian Howell Crisp, 87, of Oak Ridge, died on Oct. 1, 2005, at Windwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Clinton. Mrs. Crisp was born on May 4, 1918, in Newport, Tenn., to parents Robert and Polly Renfro Howell. Mrs. Crisp was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Crisp, in 1989, and son, Allen Keith Crisp, on July 9, 2001. Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Frances S. Crisp of Oak Ridge; grandchildren, Molly Shelton and husband, Jeff, and Scott Crisp and wife, Tara, all of Clinton; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Gavin Shelton, and Hunter, Beau, and Josie Crisp; nieces, Whis Harber and Virginia Lee Tokes; nephew, Bob Stone, all of Clinton; niece, Doris Higdon of Knoxville; and nephew, Terry Howell of Oak Ridge. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Helen Faustine Kuhns, 83, of Oak Ridge, died on Sept. 29, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Ms. Kuhns was born in Decatur, Ill., on June 8, 1922, to parents George Hiser Kuhns and Faustine Fullerton Kuhns. Ms. Kuhns retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1982 as a research librarian. She was a veteran with the Waves during World War II, and was a member of United Church Chapel on the Hill. Survivors include her sister, Martha Weicker of New Braunfels, Texas; brother, George Kuhns and wife, Patricia of Decatur, Ill.; nieces, Gretchen Weicker Bullock of New Braunfels, Texas, Helen Weicker Hamil and husband, David of Austin, Texas, and Linda Kuhns of Decatur, Ill.; nephew, George Alan Kuhns and wife, Catherine, of Coral Springs, Fla.; four great nephews and one great niece. A graveside service will be held at Friends Creek Cemetery in Argenta, Ill., at a later date. The family requests that memorials be in the form of donations to United Church Chapel on the Hill, Planned Parenthood, Oak Ridge Playhouse, or Friends of the Oak idge Library.
