Henry, 79, of Knoxville, Matthew Brent "Matt" West, 19, a resident of Oliver Springs, Georgia Privette Jones, 94, a resident of Oliver Springs, Irving Spiewak, 77, of Oak Ridge, Mable "Louise" Spears Earnest, 84, of Maryville, passed away Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, at Colonial Hills Nursing Center. She was a member of Maryville Church of Christ. She was the daughter of the late James Edward and Lillie Savannah Spears. Preceded in death by her husband, John I. Earnest Jr.; a brother, Charlie Spears; and a grandson, Stephen Northcutt. Survivors include her son, John I. Earnest III; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lynn and Glenn Northcutt of Oak Ridge and Carol and Jim Stambaugh of Knoxville; grandsons, David Earnest and wife Lori, Michael Earnest and wife, Tawn, Scott Earnest and wife Fiona, Kent Earnest, Doug Stambaugh and wife Jennifer; granddaughters, Jennifer Breunig and husband Dominik, Katie Hamby and husband Derik, Bonnie Coffey and husband Mike; 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary with Minister Dan Chambers officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at Chuckey United Methodist Church in Chuckey, Tenn. Family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, in the Trinity Chapel of Smith Mortuary in Maryville. Geoffrey Gleason, 82, passed away on Monday, Oct. 3, 2005. Mr. Gleason was born in Los Angeles, Calif., to the late Shelley Irving Gleason and the late Greta Newby Muir Gleason. He attended schools in California and Hawaii, where his maternal grandparents owned a sugar plantation. He was an avid surfer during his youth. He and a lifetime friend, Gaylord Hold, built their own chemistry laboratory during their high school years. Mr. Gleason attended the University of Southern California, graduating with high honors in organic chemistry as a chemical engineer. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Corpsman working as a laboratory chemist in the San Diego Naval Hospital. Upon graduation Mr. Gleason accepted employment with Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, Ill. There he met his future wife, Helen Louise Unger. They were married on May 18, 1950. In 1952, he and the family moved to Tennessee to start the Abbott Laboratories Radioisotope Division in Oak Ridge. In 1964, when Abbott relocated back to North Chicago, Mr. Gleason elected to stay in Oak Ridge, completing his career as a professor with Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Mr. Gleason was an accomplished classical pianist, writing and arranging many classical compositions, and entertaining family and friends over his lifetime. In addition to teaching astronomy at ORAU, Mr. Gleason also built several telescopes and observed hundreds of galaxies in the universe. He was a lifelong Rotarian and attended luncheon meetings with the noon Oak Ridge Rotary Club. As an avid sailor, some of his happiest days were spent in his boat, Saggita, at the Concord Yacht Club where he was a member for nearly 40 years. Mr. Gleason leaves his wife of 55 years, Helen Louise Gleason; daughter Greta Satterwhite and her husband, Charlie, and grandsons Alan and Brian Satterwhite of Oak Ridge; son Gary Alan Gleason and wife, Sharleen, and children Colleen, Greg, Scott, and Hillary of Hilton Head, S.C.; and granddaughter, Lori Gleason of Portsmouth, R.I. Special lifelong friends include Jo Pierce of Oak Ridge, Jean and Fred Millis of Knoxville, Virginia Minuzzo of Florida, and Gaylord Hold of California. Family visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 14, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Fellowship Room at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. A memorial service will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. in the sanctuary. At the deceased's wishes, the body has been donated to the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. Mr. Gleason was a true man of scientific research. Contributions in his honor can be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the charity of the donor's choice. Henry, 79, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. Mr. Henry was born Oct. 29, 1925, in Knox County to the late James Oris and Bertha Delaney Henry. He was a member of the Dante Church of God. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and loved being with his family. Mr. Henry was retired from the Knox County School System in the maintenance department. Mr. Henry was preceded in death by his wife Mary Henry. He is survived by one son, Darrell Collins and wife Donna; and by three daughters, Janis Graves and husband William of Knoxville, Vickie Jollay and husband Frank of Jefferson City, and Georgia West and husband Frank of Knoxville; three brothers and one sister; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday Oct. 5, 2005, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard West officiating. Graveside services will be held at noon Thursday, Oct. 6, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Matthew Brent "Matt" West, 19, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, in Roane County. Matt was born Feb. 6, 1986, in Oak Ridge, living all of his life in Oliver Springs. Matthew was employed at Total Demolition in Knoxville. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harold and Pearl West. He is survived by his parents, Tim and Debra West of Oliver Springs; brother, Jason West of Oliver Springs; sisters, Christy Taylor and husband Chris of Oliver Springs, and Ashley West of Oliver Springs; nephew and nieces, Blake Taylor, Abbie West and Blaklee Taylor; maternal grandparents, Robert and Connie Butler of Oliver Springs. He is also survived by several cousins, aunts, uncles, and special friends. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, between the hours of 6 and 8:30 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Garvan Walls officiating.
