From The Oak Ridger 7 Oct 2005 Eileen Alma Kasten, 79, of Oak Ridge, Irving Spiewak Helen Kuhns,Memorial Eileen Alma Kasten, 79, of Oak Ridge, died on Oct. 6, 2005, at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee in Knoxville. She was born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Aug. 20, 1926, to parents William Henry Kiehne and Clara Anita Grossheider Kiehne. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge, where she was active in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, and she had been a volunteer for CONTACT. She was a graduate of Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, Mo. Mrs. Kasten worked as a pediatric nurse in the premature nursery while her husband was working on his doctorate at the University of Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Rudolph Kasten, who died Feb. 29, 2004; and by a brother, Charles Kiehne. Survivors include her son, Kim Kasten and wife RaNaye of Oak Ridge; daughters, Susan Goebbert and husband, Bob of Hinsdale, Ill., and Jennifer Kasten of Knoxville; a brother, William Kiehne and wife, Jody of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; sisters, Viola Fisher of Perryville, Mo., and Kathleen "Kit" Sievers of Hillsboro, Ill.; grandchildren, Brad Goebbert and wife, Amy, Heather Freet and husband, Bruce, and Brandon Goebbert; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Melanie Freet and Braeden Goebbert; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at Faith Lutheran Church with the Rev. James P. Evers officiating. Interment will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Memorials may be made in the form of donations to Faith Lutheran Church, 1300 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Irving Spiewak died Tuesday night, Oct. 4, 2005, from complications of lymphatic cancer. Born in Brooklyn in 1928, Mr. Spiewak was a graduate of Cooper Union and held a masters degree in nuclear engineering from MIT. He moved to Oak Ridge in 1948 as a student at the MIT Practice School and was a nuclear engineer and manager in the Reactor Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory until his retirement in 1983. After retirement, he worked as a consultant with Oak Ridge Associated Universities and then moved to Israel where he continued to work as a consultant with clients including the Weizmann Institute and the European Union. He returned to live in Oak Ridge in 2004. For many years Mr. Spiewak was the concertmaster of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and was active locally in chamber music. He was also active with the Oak Ridge Playhouse in the 1950s and 1960s, and he served on the Anderson County School Board from 1966 to 1973. He was president of the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge in the 1960s, and at the time of his death he was serving as its vice president. Mr. Spiewak is survived by his wife, Mika Lavi Spiewak; his son, Alan Spiewak; daughter-in-law, Patricia Gutzwiller; and grandson, Max Spiewak of Greensboro, N.C.; his son, Jonathan Spiewak of New York City; his daughter, Leah Spiewak of Knoxville; his sister, Mildred Dresselhaus of Arlington, Mass.; and his first wife, Patt Bryan of Knoxville. Services were held at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at 2 p.m. Online messages to the family may be left at www.martinoakridgefuneralhome.com. The United Church, The Chapel on the Hill will hold a "Friendship Celebration" in memory of Helen Kuhns, long-time member of The United Church. Helen died suddenly Thursday, Sept. 29. Her ashes have been taken to her hometown of Decatur, Ill., where the family will hold a memorial service.
