From the Knoxville News Sentinel 6 Oct 2005 GLEASON, GEOFFREY - 82, JONES, GEORGIA PRIVETTE - age 94, a resident of Oliver Springs MERRYMAN, WILMA STOUT - age 91 of Fountain City PHILLIPS, STELLA - formerly of Vasper, Tennessee, GLEASON, GEOFFREY - 82, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2005. Mr. Gleason was born in Los Angeles, California to the late Shelley Irving Gleason and the late Greta Newby Muir Gleason. He attended schools in California and Hawaii, where his maternal grandparents owned a sugar plantation. He was an avid surfer during his youth. He and a lifetime friend, Gaylord Hold, built their own chemistry laboratory during their high school years. Mr. Gleason attended the University of Southern California, graduating with high honors in Organic Chemistry as a Chemical Engineer. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Corpsman working as a laboratory chemist in the San Diego Naval Hospital. Upon graduation Mr. Gleason accepted employment with Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, Illinois. There he met his future wife, Helen Louise Unger. They were married on May 18, 1950. In 1952, he and the family moved to Tennessee to start the Abbott Laboratories Radioisotope Division in Oak Ridge. In 1964, when Abbott relocated back to N. Chicago, Mr. Gleason elected to stay in Oak Ridge, completing his career as a professor with Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Mr. Gleason was an accomplished classical pianist, writing and arranging many classical compositions, and entertaining family and friends over his lifetime. In addition to teaching astronomy at ORAU, Mr. Gleason also built several telescopes and observed hundreds of galaxies in the universe. He was a life long Rotarian and attended luncheon meetings with the noon Oak Ridge Rotary Club. As an avid sailor, some of his happiest days were spent in his boat, Saggita, at the Concord Yacht Club where he was a member for nearly 40 years. Mr. Gleason leaves his wife of 55 years, Helen Louise Gleason; daughter Greta Satterwhite (Charlie) and grandsons Alan and Brian Satterwhite of Oak Ridge; son Gary Alan Gleason (Sharleen) and children Colleen, Greg, Scott, and Hillary of Hilton Head, South Carolina; and granddaughter Lori Gleason of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Special life long friends include Jo Pierce (Oak Ridge), Jean and Fred Millis (Knoxville), Virginia Minuzzo (Florida), and Gaylord Hold (California). Family visitation will be held on October 14 from 2 - 3:00 in the Fellowship Room at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. A memorial service will be held from 3 - 4:00 in the Sanctuary. At the deceased's wishes, the body has been donated to the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. Mr. Gleason was a true man of scientific research. Contributions in his honor can be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the charity of the donor's choice. We mourn our loss, but celebrate his long life. JONES, GEORGIA PRIVETTE - age 94, a resident of Oliver Springs passed away Tuesday, October 04, 2005 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She was born August 23, 1911 in Petros and lived most of her life in the Oliver Springs area. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 pm, Friday, October 7, 2005 at Sharp Funeral Home with funeral service following at 8:00 pm, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wesley Duncan, Rev. Sam Loy & special former pastor, Rev. Kenny Stubbs officiating. Burial and graveside services will be held Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 11:00 am at New Fairview Cemetery. Sharp Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. MERRYMAN, WILMA STOUT - age 91 of Fountain City departed this life into eternal rest Tuesday, October 4th at St. Mary's Hospital. She was a member of Fountain City United Methodist Church for 65 years. She was born in LaFollette, TN in 1914. Preceded in death by her parents, W.G. and Bertha Stout and her beloved sister Carmen Eblen. She taught first grade at Well Springs School before her children were born. She was a very devoted and proud homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Leaving behind to cherish her memory: A.R. (Art) Merryman, her husband of 66 years; sons and daughters-in-law: Bob and Sandy Merryman, Ron and Shirley Merryman, Gary and Gail Merryman all of Knoxville; grandchildren: Amy and Geff Davis, Jill and Phil Rogers, Beth and Jeff Lewis, Kenny and Joan Merryman, Randy and Susan Merryman, Cyndi Long, Angie and Kenny Boheler; step-grandchildren: Robby and Pam Lane, Rodney and Maranda Lane, Reggie and Dina Lane; great- grandchildren: Cade and Cooper Davis, Brady Rogers, Ellie and Meg Lewis, Todd and Molly Kate Merryman, Wil and Lucy Merryman and Bryce Long; step-great grandchildren: Madeline Lane, Abby and Jake Lane, Bryce and Bennett Lane; her special niece and husband Melinda and Bill Thompson and great-niece Amanda Jackson and her husband Keith; a very caring neighbor: Beth Nelson. Funeral service 7 pm Thursday Gentry-Griffey Chapel. Rev. James Whedbee and John Needy officiating. Interment will be Friday morning at 11 am at Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. PHILLIPS, STELLA - formerly of Vasper, Tennessee, commonly known by her friends as "Granny", passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville. She was born December 04, 1905 and was a charter member of Little Cove Creek Baptist Church where she served as organist at the age of 13. She was preceded in death by: husband of 56 years, Robert (Bob); and son, Arnold. Survivors: son, Jim & daughter-in-law, Nancy Phillips of Jacksboro; daughters, Glenna & son-in-law, Odis Phillips of Brandon, Florida, Jean & son-in-law, Tom Jones, of Dayton, Ohio, Bobby Ann & son-in-law, Bob Copeland of Dayton, Ohio; special sister, Pearl Denney & daughter, Elaine of Knoxville; and sister-in-law, Geneva Phillips of Knoxville; special grandchildren, Cheryl Ferrill & Keith Phillips, Pat Orta & Pam Major, Tom & Dan Jones & Jeff Copeland; 4 great-grandchildren; and 6 great- great-grandchildren.
