Ronald Austin Muenzer, 63, a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, died after a long illness on Sept. 25, 2005, at his home on Everest Circle. Ron was a beloved person in Oak Ridge, growing up on Tabor Road with his sister Ellie, brother Bill, and parents Walter and Dorothy. Ron was active in his community and a devout Christian. He was a sweet and loving child and grew into a towering and powerful man full of courage and bravery. After graduating from Oak Ridge High School, he joined the U.S. Navy for four years serving as a sonar operator in the Submarine corps in the Cold War. After discharge he worked in St. Louis for several years and then returned to Oak Ridge to finish college at the University of Tennessee. He graduated with honors and became a police officer in Oak Ridge and met and married Verda Tackett. As an officer, Ron was compassionate and empathic with victims of crime, and also, he felt for the citizens in impossible situations where crime many times begins. So he returned to school and graduated from seminary, again with honors. He was able to work for some time as a preacher, but crippling back pain and arthritis developed and worsened, preventing him from being as involved in life as much as he wanted. Still, he preached occasionally at local churches and drove a bus for school children, who loved him dearly. Verda, his wife of 34 years, was the love of his life and they were devoted to each other. Verda worked hard to help support the family, stood by Ron and his disability through thick and thin, and is equally courageous in the story of their life together. He was a devoted father to Ron and Melissa and a loving grandfather to his grandson, Hunter. His wife Verda Muenzer, his son Ron Muenzer, daughter Melissa Wright, grandson Hunter, his brother Bill Muenzer of Knoxville, and his sister Ellie Tucker of Chapel Hill, N.C., survive him. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. Online messages to the family may be left at www.martinoakridgefuneralhome.com. His family loved him here on earth and prays for his peace and comfort in his life everlasting. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
