From the Knoxville News Sentinel 21 Sep 2005 CUNNINGHAM, BILLIE LENORE THARPE - age 74 FAIRSTEIN, EDWARD - 82 of Oak Ridge, GRESHAM, WILLIAM CHARLES - age 60, of Oak Ridge CUNNINGHAM, BILLIE LENORE THARPE - age 74 passed away at her home in Oak Ridge Monday evening. She is preceded in death by her parents; W. Herb & Myrtle Tharpe, and her sister; Ann "Boo Boo" Bozeman. Survivors include daughter, Mary Ruth Millsap; adopted daughter, Shelia Davis; grandchildren, Sandra & husband Kevin Wright, Chris & wife Saundra Millsap, Michael & wife Jami Millsap; great grandchildren, Shayla, Casey, & Angel; sisters, Wanda "Tonnie" Sexton of Kokomo, IN, Mary Standridge & Peggy Abbott both of Knoxville; brothers, Richard Tharpe of KY, & Doyle Tharpe of TX; 13 nieces & nephews; and 30 great nieces & nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm Wednesday at Weaver's Chapel with the service to follow at 8 pm. Graveside services will be held 11 am Thursday at the Oakland Cemetery in Maynardville. Weaver Funeral Home is honored to serve the family. FAIRSTEIN, EDWARD - 82 of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, September 18 at Methodist Medical Center. Born December 14, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, he was the oldest son of Sydney Samuel Fairstein and Katherine Bader Fairstein. Ed graduated from the City College of New York with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After college, Ed traveled to Oak Ridge to work in the Manhattan Project's Clinton Engineering District. He later joined an instrumentation group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) headed by Cas Borkowski. At ORNL, Ed made dramatic improvements to nuclear instrumentation, developing the first bipolar pulse amplifier. In 1959, Ed and his former spouse, Helen Jernigan formed a new company, Tennelec, to design and produce the highest quality products for nuclear science and medicine. The company developed a reputation as producing the "Rolls Royce" of nuclear instrumentation. In 1972, Ed was made a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He also served as a consultant on NASA's Gamma Ray Observatory, the Atlas rocket program and the IEEE Nuclear Instrument Standards Committee. Ed was active in a number of local organizations including the Oak Ridge Industrial Board, Grove Development Corporation and the Friends of the Library. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by: his brother, Alfred Fairstein. Ed is survived by: his two sons John and Joel Fairstein. The family will receive friends Saturday, October 1 from 2-4pm at the Oak Ridge Unitarian-Universalist Church, 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike. A memorial service will be held immediately following at 4pm. GRESHAM, WILLIAM CHARLES - age 60, of Oak Ridge passed away Monday September 19, 2005 at the Methodist Medical Center. Mr. Gresham was born July 20, 1945 in Cleveland, TN to William and Kate Gresham and moved to Oak Ridge at a young age. A veteran of the United States Army he served in the Vietnam War. He was employed as a civil engineer with the Department of Human Services and had lived in Australia for 20 years and moved back to Oak Ridge 6 years ago. He enjoyed sports and was a U.T. football fan. Preceded in death by his father William Gresham he is survived by his wife Susan Gresham of Oak Ridge, his mother Kate Gresham of Oak Ridge, three children Jeffery Gresham, Paul Gresham, and Phoebe Gresham all of Australia, step son Nick Raskulinecz and his wife Amber of California, one brother Frank Norman Gresham of Florida, 3 grandchildren and one step granddaughter Sophia Raskulinecz of California. A memorial service will be held Friday September 23, 2005 8:00 pm in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday September 23, 2005 7 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. The family has requested that friends wear bright cheerful colors to the celebration of William's life.
