From the Knoxville News Sentinel 10 Dec 2005 BARKMAN, FRANCES LINDA - 57, BERKSHIRE, REVEREND CARL E. - age 78 of Harriman BURCHFIELD, KATHRYN LOUISE -age 77 of Knoxville formally of Rockwood p CATHCART, JOHN VARN - aged 82 years, ERWIN, LAURA JEAN - 79, of Powder Springs, GA and formerly of Oak Ridge, REYNER, GLENN DAROLD - age 91, of Norris, BARKMAN, FRANCES LINDA - 57, with her family at her side, peacefully ended her fight against pain on December 8, 2005 at her home in Oak Ridge. She had been intermittently ill for many years, but always maintained a positive disposition and a thoughtfulness for those around her. Linda was born in Frostburg, MD on December 13, 1947. She is survived by her cherished family, husband of 35 years and soul mate, Donald F. Barkman; daughter, Michelle M. Barkman; grandson, Aiden J. Barkman and her parents, James R. Lancaster and Bernadine Rooney Lancaster of Frostburg, MD and extended family. She was preceded in death by her brother James R. "Stretch" Lancaster of the greater Cumberland, MD area. Mrs. Barkman had been a member of St. Michael's parish in Frostburg during her youth and recently of St. Mary's in Oak Ridge. She graduated from Beall H..S. in Frostburg in 1965, and earned a B. A. in Education with a French major from Frostburg State University in 1969 and an M. A. in French from Ohio University in 1973. She taught French at Fort Hill High School in Cumberland from 1969 - 1972 and then held teaching and coordination positions while living in Parkersburg, WV from 1973 - 1978. She lived for three years in Louisville, KY before moving to the Knoxville, TN area where she lived in Farragut from 1981 - 2000 when the family moved to Oak Ridge. She taught French at Oliver Springs H. S. for ten years, retiring in 1998 due to medical disability. During her French teaching career, "Madame Barkman" led several student trips to France and always enjoyed encountering her graduates later in life. To those who knew her, she was the best of friends, a truly dedicated teacher, and a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed life while meeting its adversities with exemplary courage. She will be dearly missed. Funeral arrangements are being handled in Oak Ridge by Weatherford Mortuary with visitation from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Sunday, December 11, 2005. Additional visitation will be handled in the Cumberland, MD area by the Scarpelli Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 14, 2005 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Michael's in Frostburg on Thursday, December 15, 2005 at 10:00 am with burial thereafter. He was a well-known builder of homes, churches & schools in Roane & surrounding counties. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jerry Berkshire, & infant great grandson, Bobby Miller. Sanders. She was of the Baptist faith. Preceded in death by parents John and Anna Martin Burchfield, sisters Mary Alice Cook and Esther Ruth Burchfield, and nephew Dennis. He was born in St. George, South Carolina, son of Thomas Madden and Daisy Varn Cathcart. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, June Johnson; a brother, Tom; and a stepson, Alan Johnson. Survivors include his wife, Mary; a brother, Foster; and a sister, Jean Thomas. Other survivors include a stepson, Charles Johnson; stepdaughters, Page Amador and Elizabeth Rivers; four step grandchildren: Jeffery, Rob, and Jimmy Johnson, and Olivia Rivers; and three step great granddaughters. Dr. Cathcart graduated from Clemson University in 1946, after a college career interrupted by three years of military service. He subsequently received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Raven Honor Society. He came to Oak Ridge in 1951 to work in the Metals and Ceramics Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He became group leader of the Oxidation and Diffusion Group in 1958. A professional highlight was his chairmanship of the Gordon Conference dealing with metallic corrosion. In 1984, he accepted the responsibility for the design, construction and oversight of the High Temperature Materials Laboratory. An ardent advocate of civil rights, Dr. Cathcart was active in the early days of racial integration in Oak Ridge. Following his retirement in 1984, he continued to pursue a wide range of interests including cosmology, physics and astronomy. He shared his interest in astronomy by writing a column for the Oak Ridger. He was an especially passionate duplicate bridge player. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church this Sunday at 3:00 PM, followed by the burial of his ashes in the church's Memorial Garden. ERWIN, LAURA JEAN - 79, of Powder Springs, GA and formerly of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, December 8, 2005 at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA. She was born August 7, 1926 in Chattanooga, the daughter of Ida and Walter Marvin Hicks. Mrs. Erwin was a homemaker and a member of Central Baptist Church. Before moving to Georgia in January of this year, she enjoyed participating in the activities of the Senior Citizens Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, William Houston Thomas in 1968 and Robert Erwin in 1988. She was also preceded in death by brother, Stanley Hicks and sister, Polly Hicks. She is survived by: son, Frank Thomas and his wife Angela of Powder Springs, GA; brother, Walter Marvin Hicks, Jr., of Chattanooga and; 4 grandchildren, Allison, Amanda, Sarah and Jennifer Thomas. He was born in Broken Bow, Nebraska, on February 18, 1914 , the son of Laura Pritchard Reyner and Paul Reyner. He attended South Dakota School of Mines College. During World War II he served in the Navy. His beloved wife, Maryhelen Carmichael Reyner, preceded him, as did his siblings, Charles, George, and Jesse Reyner Lanphere. His entire career was spent at the Social Security Administration headquarters, where he rose to the position of Section Chief. He especially enjoyed delivering speeches to doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After retirement, he and his wife, Maryhelen, lived on Sanibel Island, FL. They then moved to Norris, where they spent thirty happy years. Mr. Reyner is survived by his twin daughters,Nancy Jane Caldwell & husband George of Walkersville, MD, Elsin Ann Perry & husband Rev. Gene Perry of Halls; beloved grandson, Glenn R. Gardner of Hyattsville, MD; his precious granddaughter, Nancy Flynn Gardner of Frederick, MD; very special family friend, Jennifer Williams of Knoxville.
