Haywood Kenneth Cross - Union Democrat, The (Oct/21/2005) Longtime Arnold resident Haywood Kenneth Cross died Sunday at a San Andreas hospital. He was 96. He was born in Tennessee and grew up on a farm in the Paint Rock Creek Valley. After graduating magna cum laude from Lincoln Memorial University, he taught school for two years. He then attended Colgate-Rochester Divinity School where he received a master's degree and became a minister in the American Baptist Church. In addition to his career as a chaplain, he also spent 20 years pastoring churches in New York, California and Montana, and as a missionary to the Crow Indians. He was a chaplain in the U.S. Army for 20 years, and served in World War II and the Korean War. He moved to Arnold in the 1970s, and made contributions to the Arnold community. He was instrumental in the creation of White Pines Park and the Sierra Logging Museum. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club, the Moose Lodge, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Association of Retired Persons. He enjoyed writing poetry and was recognized with several national awards. Mr. Cross is survived by his wife, Audrey; a son, Haywood Jr.; daughters, Kathie and Sandra; and grandchildren, Tyler and Teagan. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Murphys. A reception will follow. Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
