From The Oak Ridger 7 Dec 2005 Charles Fugate Eppes Jr., age 94, of Oak Ridge, Mr. James Carl Hammond, age 54, of 293 Tobey Hollow Lane in Knoxville, formerly of Sunbright, Stella Marie Hamby Melhorn, age 90, of Wartburg, Richard Hicks "Dick" O'Hair, of West Knoxville, Tenn. Frances Seroba Skaggs Shifflett, Tom Randall Stokes, age 59, of Knoxville, Michael Ray Yancy, 38, of Oak Ridge, Charles Fugate Eppes Jr., age 94, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. After the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Eppes registered for the draft, but due to his hearing problems and impaired eyesight, he was exempt but was listed as "limited service." He was never called to duty. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority, came to Oak Ridge in 1943, worked for MSI and continued his work as an accountant with Barber Buick, Reading Buick, Hoskins Drug Store and Valley Pontiac until he retired on April 1, 1979. He was a founding member of the '43 Club. After retirement, he and Helen devoted themselves to traveling and volunteer work in the community. Mr. Eppes was an avid Tennessee Lady Vols basketball fan and was looking forward to another outstanding year for the team. Born in the family home on Luttrell Street in Historic Fourth and Gill area, Charles attended Old Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee where he played saxophone in junior high school, high school, university bands and several jazz bands. During the school year, Charles worked as an orderly at the Old General Hospital on Riverside Drive and for his father who owned Glen More Clothing. The day school was out, the Eppes family took the train to spend their summer at their home in Kinzel Springs (now Townsend, Tenn.). Charles regularly played saxophone on weekends at the Kinzel Springs Pavilion. They returned home the week before Labor Day. Mr. Eppes was a devout Christian and remained active in his church, First Baptist Knoxville, until two weeks before his death. He was one of the older members of the church having been baptized when First Baptist Church was located on Gay Street. Mr. Eppes was a member of the Sons of the Revolution, the Jamestown Society, the Eppes Society, First Families of Tennessee, and the Welsh Society. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Helen Anderson Eppes; parents, Charles Fugate Eppes and Hattie Roberts Eppes; brother, Clarence Edward Eppes; and sisters, Ethel Eppes Glenn, Ella Eppes Durham Williams, and Hattie Roberts Eppes Robertson. He is survived by his daughter, Loucinda Jane Eppes of Knoxville; son, William Llewellyn Eppes and wife Ann FitzGerald Eppes, of Cary, N.C.; grandchildren, Jennifer Eppes Baker of Wake Forest, N.C., and William Llewellyn Eppes Jr.; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Margaret Baker, Benjamin Scott Baker, Bethany Christine Baker, and Tyler Lee Eppes (born on Charles' birthday March 19); and other nephews and cousins. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, at First Baptist Church, Knoxville, with the Rev. William D. Shiell, the Rev. Dave Ward, the Rev. Jud Reasons, and the Rev. James Evers officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: his grandson, William L. Eppes Jr.; nephews, Mike Cunningham, Jim Durham, R. Kent Farris, MD, William House Jr., Robert P. Murrian, and Andrew Renfro. Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel in Knoxville. Mr. James Carl Hammond, age 54, of 293 Tobey Hollow Lane in Knoxville, formerly of Sunbright, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at his brother's home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Mary Davis Hammond; and a brother, Lloyd Hammond Jr. He is survived by a brother, Floyd Hammond and special friend Carisa Woods of 293 Tobey Hollow Lane in Knoxville; a sister, Geneva Williams of Cleveland, Tenn.; and nieces, Tammy and Belinda Hammond, and Jamie Hammond, all of Knoxville. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, from 11 a.m. to noon at Schubert Funeral Home in Sunbright, will funeral services to follow with the Rev. Frank Kirby officiating. Stella Marie Hamby Melhorn, age 90, of Wartburg, passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wartburg and was also a 1936 graduate of Oakdale High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, F. Edmond Melhorn; and their infant children, James and Virginia; her parents, William and Clara Ruppe Hamby; a sister, Katie Hamby; a brother; Charles Hamby; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Sexton Melhorn; a grandson, Joseph Melhorn; a great-grandson, Alex Goins; and a great-granddaughter, Neeley Elisabeth Prince. She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Jean (and Wes) Bridwell of Lafayette, Tenn., Millie Norma Prince of Morristown, Faye (and Milton) Armstrong of Knoxville, Vicky (and Earl) Donald of Clinton, and Jerri Melhorn (and Jerry) Amonett of Oak Ridge; her sons, David Sr. (and Betty) Melhorn of Wartburg, Donald (and Ruth) Melhorn of Wartburg, Stanley (and Connie) Melhorn of Knoxville, Larry Melhorn of Wartburg, and Michael (and Doris ) Melhorn of Lancing; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; also several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; her sisters, Loella Melhorn of Kingston, Wilma Walker of Harriman, and Lena Henley of Oliver Springs; and her brother, Fred Hamby of Coalfield. The family received friends Sunday evening, Dec. 4, 2005, at Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg from 5 to 8 p.m.. Funeral services followed at 8 p.m. with Pastor Robert Pfaff officiating. Graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Camp Austin Church cemetery in Oakdale. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Melhorn family fund for her grandson, David (Henry) Melhorn Jr., who is awaiting a heart transplant at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Richard Hicks "Dick" O'Hair, of West Knoxville, Tenn., died Sunday, Dec. 4, 3005, following surgery for pancreatic cancer. He was born July 30, 1923, in Muskogee, Okla., to Ralph M. and Clara Hicks O'Hair. He grew up in Rock Hill, S.C., and graduated from Winthrop Training School in 1941. His college education was interrupted for three years by World War II and as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Infantry he saw action in France, Austria and Germany. He graduated from Davidson College in 1947 where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, football, wrestling and track teams, ODK, and the 1946 All-State football team. He also played for the Charlotte Clippers semi-pro football club. He married Harriette Dixon Grice on June 26, 1948. He was self-employed for many years in the insurance and estate planning field in Charlotte and worked for several years as a substitute teacher at Oak Ridge High School. In 1997, at the age of 74, he earned his MBA from Tusculum College. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and later of First Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge, serving as an Elder and teacher. He was devoted to his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Frances O'Hair Gayle. He is survived by caregiver and daughter, Bonnie O'Hair Murray and husband Sydney of West Knoxville; daughter, Amy O'Hair-Smith and husband Joe of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Richard "Hap" O'Hair Jr. and wife Karen of High Point, N.C.; the children's mother, Harriette Grice O'Hair; grandchildren, Sydney Murray III, Richard O'Hair III, Colin Smith, Ashley O'Hair and Keely Smith; and a brother, Ralph M. O'Hair Jr. Interment will be in the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. She was born in the town of Paragould, Greene County, Ark., on Feb. 13, 1927, and graduated in 1943 from Central High School in Cape Gireadeau, Mo. She was a member of The Church of the Good Samaritan. Mrs. Shifflett was preceded in death by her parents, Ina Belle and Webster Alexander Skaggs; a sister, Patricia Ella Snider; and a brother, Kendrick Skaggs. Frances is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Alvin D. Shifflett; sons, Robert D. Shifflett and wife Kimberly of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mark H. Shifflett and wife Pattricia of Roodhouse, Ill.; daughters, JoAnn Durant and husband Ronald, Janet L. Conley and husband David of Blue Springs, Mo., Barbara Gail Shifflett and husband William Harris of Knoxville; grandchildren, Erik E.W. and Sarah Gail Shifflett, Michael Muntifering, Christopher and Lindsey Durant, Steven Wills and Daniel Griffith, Morgan and Courtney Conley, Kimberly Oliver, and Madison Harris; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, James Patrick Snider; sister-in-law, Kathy Skaggs; nieces and nephews, Mike, Cathy, Steve, Beth Ann, Tom and Steve; and many special great-nieces and nephews. Weaver Funeral Home in Knoxville is in charge of arrangements. Tom Randall Stokes, age 59, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Hospital. Tom was a radiation biologist in Oak Ridge in the early 1970s and then was the founder, owner and only CEO of NuCycle, a company that re-manufacturers ink ribbon and laser toner cartridges from computer printers and returns them to use. Tom continued to successfully operate NuCycle and remained a bachelor until 59 years of age, when he married the one love of his life, Sally Licata Stokes. Tom then experienced the happiest six months of his life until he tragically died from complications of cancer on December 5, 2005, at Park West Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara C. Stokes, and father, Earl M. Stokes. Survivors include his wife, Sally Licata Stokes of Knoxville; mother-in-law, Nina Licata of New York; sisters, Ferris and husband Lynn Wood of Clinton, and Lyndall and husband Roger L. Ridenour of Clinton; brothers-in-law, Salvatore Licata and wife Jeanne of New York, and Anthony Licata of New York; seven nieces and nephews; and eight great nieces and nephews; two goddaughters; and many special friends and business associates. The family will receive friends from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005, at Memorial United Methodist Church with the funeral service following with Father Chris Michelson, Father Sam H. Payne, and the Rev. Don Thomas officiating. The burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Clinton. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of all arrangements. Michael Ray Yancy, 38, of Oak Ridge, departed this earthly life on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville. He was born March 17, 1967, in Oak Ridge and was a 1986 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. He later attended Pellissippi State College where he received certificates in drafting and architecture. Michael accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of True Light Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Willie C. Yancy, whom he adored. Michael was a very loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. He loved telling jokes and making others laugh, as this was his special gift. His hobbies included watching movies, listening to music, hiking, camping, working on cars and watching football. He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his loving and devoted mother, Mary J. Yancy of Oak Ridge; father, Joseph H. Willis of Clinton; two loyal and dedicated brothers, Torey D. Yancy of Oak Ridge, and Anthony D. "Pete" Yancy of Huntsville, Ala.; a loving and devoted grandmother, Willie M. Yancy of Oak Ridge; aunts, Rosie Yancy Odem of Atlanta, Ga., and Betty S. (Tony) Cheeseman of Aurora, Colo.; uncles, the Rev. Charles E. (and Maria) Yancy of Knoxville, James L. Yancy of San Diego, Calif., Eddie J. Yancy of Columbus, Ga., and the Rev. John T. (and Althea) Yancy of Goosecreek, S.C.; special great uncle and aunt, George "Buddy" and Emma Sutton of Oak Ridge; and a host of cousins, other family and friends.
