    2. >From The Oak Ridger 18 Sep 2007 Howard B. Crotinger, age 90, Robert Sydney "Bob" Durham, age 76, of Knoxville and formerly of Oak Ridge, Steven G. Rhoads, age 57, of Clinton, Mary Paul Thompson, 82, of Oak Ridge, Howard B. Crotinger, age 90, a World War II veteran, died Sept. 14, 2007, at NHC Nursing Home, where he had been cared for by dedicated staff, with the help of hospice. Howard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lee Crotinger; and his daughter, Susan Crotinger of Connecticut. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Friedel Boerner of Germany, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins in Germany. During World War II, he became a U.S. Army Signal Corps motion picture photographer. He was highly decorated for some of the work he did, and has a large collection of photos from the war years in the European theater. After the war, he prepared for a career with the U.S. State Department Foreign Service. His first assignment was in Bremen, Germany, where he met his wife, Lee. They were married in an 800-year-old church in Lee's hometown of Bad Wildungen, Germany. Howard's Foreign Service posts included France; Vienna; Kobe and Yokohama, Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; Sydney, Australia; and several Washington, D.C. assignments. His last post was Vienna, Austria. During their time in Vienna, Howard and Lee made many friends from Oak Ridge, and after his retirement in 1975, they settled in Oak Ridge. Howard was a volunteer photographer for many charitable organizations and his church, First United Methodist Church, where they have been members for 30 years. He gave freely his time for many good causes. He taught tennis for the YWCA, the Oak Ridge Girls Club and many others. He was a longtime volunteer at the Oak Ridge Public Library. He particularly loved his home and his garden, and spent most of his time outside. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, followed by the interrment of the ashes in the church's Memorial Garden, with a reception and receiving of friends to follow. The family requests any memorials be in the form of contributions to First United Methodist Church, Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, Holiday Bureau, or the American Red Cross. Arrangements by Cremation Options Inc. Robert Sydney "Bob" Durham, age 76, of Knoxville and formerly of Oak Ridge, Tenn., died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at Baptist Medical Center. He was born to the late Bunyon and Bessie Hollaman Durham on July 10, 1931, in Springfield, Tenn. Bob was a member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden and was a United States Marine serving during the Korean War, who received the Silver Star, the third highest honor awarded to a Marine. Bob was retired from Martin Marietta after 40 years of service as a graphic artist. Bob was an avid golfer, tennis player, Ping-Pong player, and swimmer, and had many horseshoe trophies. Bob is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Margaret R. Durham; daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Larry Marable and Diane and Darryl Boyer; stepson, Charles Ray; stepdaughter, Sharon Parsons; grandchildren, Kathleen Marable, Lindy Adams and Daniel and Emily Boyer; a great-grandson, Matthew Parsons, whom he and Margaret raised as a child; sisters, Angela and Faye; and stepmother, Emily Durham. Family and friends will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery for a graveside service with full military honors presented by the Volunteer State Veterans' Honor Guard. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Baptist Church of Bearden, Singles Ministry, 6300 Deane Hill Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919. Steve worked many years in the area as a master plumber and was an avid fisherman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by mother, Betty Clark Rhoads; and brother, John L. Rhoads Jr. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Rhoads of Clinton; stepson, Larry May and wife, Valerie, of Clinton; father, the Rev. John L. Rhoads Sr., and wife, Helen, of Kingston; mother-in-law, Ora Lloyd of Clinton; brother, Tom Rhoads and wife, Debbie, of Claxton; sisters, Diane Rhoads of Bean Station and Mary Patricia Rhoads of Blountville; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home with funeral service to follow in the chapel. Interment will be Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of the arrangements. Mary Paul Thompson, 82, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at the Methodist Medical Center.
