He was born on March 15, 1927 to Samuel and Samantha (Smiddy) Baird at Campbell County, Tennessee. The family later moved to Stinking Creek, where he grew up and received his early education. At the age of 12, he began working in the coal mines in Eastern Tennessee, as a water boy and finally worked his way up to becoming a coal miner. He barely survived a mine cave-in and then decided he needed to find other work. He was then employed at Oak Ridge during the 'Manhattan Project' and in 1948 he came to the Leavenworth area. He was employed by F.T. Motteler Orchards and together with his brother, Monroe; they later began working for Ron and Steve Jones Logging. He loved his family immensely and his life revolved around them, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending a considerable amount of time taking his children hunting and fishing, many times going into the Snow Lakes and Enchantments with only a fishing pole and frying pan. He loved tracking honey bees from the waters edge to the hive.
