In the 1960's Per West-Murley Funeral Home Records John D. West was buried in the John Stanley Cemetery. In the cemetery book, 1994 he is in the Mack Phillips Cemetery. What's up with that, does anyone know the story behind the cemetery name change??? OR has he been moved from the Stanley Cem. to the Phillips Cem.? I can't find the John Stanley Cemetery but there is a Stanley Cem., Paint Rock on pg 407. Bertha Reed, d/o Sampson (Red) Reed & Angenetta (Nettie) Phillips, w/o Rev. Rhodes Acres. According to the Scott Co. Cemetery book both Rhodes & Bertha are buried in the Marcum Cemetery but Per West-Murley Funeral Home Records - she is buried in the Elsic Chitwood Cemetery. Also according to her obit she's buried in the Marcum Cemetery. I'm thinking it's a typo but ... Especially since the next person is also buried in the Chitwood Cemetery. Does anyone know where she is? Slick Rock Church - This church is in Robbins, Scott Co., TN. Does it have another name? Is this the Lone Mountain Cemetery or Brimstone??? Who were the p/o Eliphus Manuel Stephens who ma. Martha Jane Stephens & Manda Perkins??? Who are the p/o Joe M. Stephens??? " " " Sidney Stephens??? Mary Jane Swain w/o William Harvey Clark, d/o Simeon J. Swain & Eliza (Lizzie) Ann Kidd. Per Hickman-Strunk Online Funeral Home Records - Mary J. is buried in the Stephens Cem. Is Harvey in the Stearns Cem. her husband? Ok, Mary J. Clark is also buried in the Stearns Cem. with almost the same dates as Mary Jane Swain. Is Harvey & Mary J. Clark in the Stearns Cem. Mary Jane Swain w/o William Harvey Clark? Thanks, Kenna PS If you get this twice SORRY but I'm having email problems.

West definitely has a headstone at the Mack Phillips Cemetery. It does happen that burial locations get changed at the last minute and the paperwork at the funeral home doesn't get changed. There are several instances of this in all of the Scott Co funeral home records. However, it appears that John Stanley Cemetery was another name for the Mack Phillips Cemetery as the funeral home records mention several other people buried in the John Stanley Cemetery -- all of which appear in what is now known as the Mack Phillips Cemetery. John Stanley was the husband of Artema West, sister of John D. West -- that would explain the name connection. Could John have owned the land in 1960 where the Mack Phillips cemetery rests? Then later Mack acquired the land and it was named after him when he died in 1985? BTW, John and Artema are buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery. > > Bertha Reed, d/o Sampson (Red) Reed & Angenetta (Nettie) Phillips, w/o Rev. Rhodes Acres. According to the Scott Co. I have a copy of Bertha's FH record and it clearly states the Elsic Chitwood Cemetery. She is definitely buried in the Marcum Cemetery in Oneida. The Elsic Chitwood Cemetery appears to be the Jonathan Cemetery in the Bailey's book. Apparently his name was Jonathan Elsic Chitwood based on other references to his name that I have seen. I did a quick scan of the funeral home records for other people buried in the Elsic Chitwood cemetery and they all appear in the Jonathan Chitwood Cemetery. My guess is the reference to the Elsic Chitwood Cemetery on the funeral home record was a mistake by the funeral home. There are no Reeds or Acres buried there. That is a Winfield Cemetery and the Acres and Reed families (for the most part) lived south and east of Oneida. Wouldn't make sense for them to be buried up north, so to speak. > > Slick Rock Church - This church is in Robbins, Scott Co., TN. Does it have another name? Probably have to visit the Stearns Cemetery to understand the proximity of the Harvey and Mary stones. Next to each other would probably suggest a relationship. There are no Swain's or Clark's buried in the Stephens Cemetery in Pine Knot. > > > > Thanks, > > Kenna > > PS If you get this twice SORRY but I'm having email problems. > > Scott County Mailing List > Rae Davis-Smith List Administrator > raedsmith@hotmail.com > > Scott County Message Board > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.scott/mb.ashx > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to TNSCOTT-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > >
I am copying a 1901 jurnal that belonged to my great great grandfater Isaac R. S. Reed. I need some help on the following. what is gribbing, sproutig, decharming, and millit? where was Charles Phillips mill located? where is winchester? And can anyone tell me about the trail of James West on July 25,1901? Thanks, Stephen
Stephen... Would love to have a copy of the Reed journal I love reading old notes. I work at a historical museum and here's what our historian had to say. Millit is a type of grain... they feed it to birds a lot now. There are references for a type of hoe called a Gribbing Hoe... whatever that hoe was used for probably was the gribbing. She thinks it may be some sort of grain that is gleaned from the ground with a gribbing hoe. Sproutig was grain seeds that were sprouted then made into bread... often they were millet seeds and etc. It's a forgotten practice that made "live bread". You can buy it from a health food store and there's a verse in Ezekiel that says place your seeds in a vessel, sprout them and make bread. According to our 1888 dictionary decharming was defined as to be lured away from Christianity, or lose affection for someone. However Maria did say she would need to hear exactly how the sentence was read because decharming was also a term used for placing lightning rods on a building to "decharm" it from the lightning. It was also a pennsylvania dutch term for placing hex wards on buildings or barns to keep the devil out of them. Stephen, Would you be interested in allowing me to post the journal transcription on the Scott Co website? There is already a journal transcription for Irel J. Reed from 1929-1931 on the website. ...tim west...

Scott Co, TN Coordinator for the TNGenWeb Project
http://www.tngenweb.org/scott
Stephen & Patricia West said the following on 8/3/2007 6:50 PM: > I am copying a 1901 jurnal that belonged to my great great grandfater Isaac > R.
