Virginia Ruth Conley Grumbach Mrs. Mary Crawford Joshua Thomas Patterson, age 20, of Heiskell, Gerald Walker, age 75, of Clinton, David Rodney Brasier, age 58, originally from Oliver Springs and a longtime resident of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Friday, July 20, 2007, after a long battle with emphysema. David was born Dec. 31, 1948, in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and grew up in Oliver Springs. He graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1967, where he was on the track team and danced with the Ethel Howel Ballroom Dancers. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Hawaii. After his military service he worked as the manager of Morrison Company Food Service in Galax, Va. He later moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., where he remodeled kitchens, sold real estate, and fulfilled his life-long passion of working as a musician. David was an avid guitar player and singer/songwriter. Once his emphysema prevented him from performing any longer, his interests shifted to astronomy, becoming a member of various astronomy clubs. David was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ruth Brasier. Survivors include his father, Rodney Brasier of Oak Ridge; daughter, Angela Brasier; grandchildren, Eternity Perry and Hunter Balzer; sister, Robin Summers and her husband, James, of Oak Ridge; nephew, Brad Summers of Oak Ridge; and special friends, Butch and Pat Wilson of Knoxville. Virginia Ruth Conley Grumbach departed this life July 20, 2007, at the home of her daughter after a long and painful struggle. Virginia was born in Leighton, Ala., in January 1929. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Grumbach in 1995, mother Ruth in 1968, and father Arthur in 1971. She is survived by two children, Laura G. Wolfe and husband Richard of Clinton, and Matthew and wife Genia of Oak Ridge. She also leaves four grandchildren, Christian, 15, Ashley, 9, Noah, 6, and Anna Grace, 2, all of Oak Ridge. A special friend, Tammy Coleman, provided her with excellent care and companionship in her final year. Her family moved from Alabama to Oak Ridge, where she was a member of one of the first classes to graduate from Oak Ridge High School. She then attended Florence State College in Florence, Ala., before moving back to Oak Ridge. She met her future husband, William, in Oak Ridge and they were later married in Bakersfield, Calif. They returned to Oak Ridge, where she worked at K-25 and Y-12. In her early years in Oak Ridge, she was active in the Oak Ridge Playhouse and loved to play Bridge. She was a longtime employee of The Music Box. She and her husband loved to travel, especially to the beaches of North Carolina. She later became interested in crafts, especially ceramics. She spent most of her time caring for her family and helping them in whatever ways possible. Severe arthritis later made it impossible for her to work on her crafts. She found new pleasure visiting with her grandchildren. They brought her much joy in her last years. She was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church in Oak Ridge. Because she donated her remains to the University of Tennessee in Memphis, there will not be a funeral. However, a memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, in the chapel of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mrs. Mary Crawford passed away Sunday, July 22, 2007, at the Jamestowne Assisted Living in Kingston. Mrs. Crawford was born in Chicago, Ill., to Edward and Hazel Brown. She had lived in Oak Ridge since 1980 and retired from the Office of Scientific and Technical Information, DOE, in 1991 after more than 35 years of federal civilian service, starting at the Chicago Ordnance District in January 1942, with both the Army and Air Force Occupation Forces in Tokyo, Japan, from 1946 until 1952, the U.S. Air Force at Kelly Air Force Base in Texas, the U.S. Army at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, the U.S. Forest Service in Denver, Colo., ending her civilian career in Oak Ridge at DOE. Mrs. Crawford was one of five children, three of whom have preceded her in death. One sister, Mildred Ratliff, resides in Bloomington, Ind. Mrs. Crawford is survived by three children, Mrs. Candace Lett of Harriman, Tenn., Mrs. Mary Gayle of Poteet, Texas, and George Crawford of San Antonio, Texas; and seven grandchildren, Laura Fisher of Harriman, Gideon Lett of Harriman, Christine Prater of Austin, Texas, Becky Chandler of Poteet, Texas, Courtney Mabry of San Antonio, Texas, Callyn Crawford of San Antonio, Texas, and Skylar Crawford of San Antonio, Texas; and two terrific great-granddaughters, Sydney Fisher of Harriman and Katlian Mabry of San Antonio. There are two fine sons-in-law, Jim Lett of Harriman, and Russell Gayle, of Poteet, TX, and one great daughter-in-law, Monica Crawford of San Antonio. Mrs. Crawford was cremated. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at 8 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Gene Nelson officiating. Joshua Thomas Patterson, age 20, of Heiskell, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville. He was born Oct. 10, 1986, in Oak Ridge and worked as an installation technician at National Elevator Co. in Knoxville. Joshua attended Asheville High School and graduated from Halls High School in 2005. He was an avid soccer player, a sport in which he excelled. He also enjoyed many other sports including swimming, football and basketball. He enjoyed the excitement of the games and the commradery of the players. Joshua made friends very easily and valued the relationships he forged. He had a compassionate nature and befriended many with special needs. He will be forever missed. He is survived by his father, Thomas Andrew Patterson and wife, Sonya, of Heiskell; mother, Jan Roberson and husband, Tom, of Asheville, N.C.; brothers, Bradley Andrew Patterson of Asheville, N.C., and Quinton Daniel Patterson of Heiskell; sister, Jennifer Cole and husband, Terry, of Horseshoe, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Thelma Tubb of Oak Ridge; paternal grandmother, Syble Patterson of Erin, Tenn.; uncles, Randy Tubb and wife, Marilyn, of Wartburg, Tenn., and Michael Patterson of Clarksville, Tenn.; aunts, Melissa Gray of Clarksville, Tenn., and Rebecca Rickard and husband, Dale, of Manassas, Va. Gerald Walker, age 75, of Clinton, died after a car accident on Saturday, July 21, 2007. He was a member of the Babson Park Community Church in Babson Park, Fla. Gerald taught school in the Oak Ridge school system 30 years, mostly at Jefferson Junior High where he was a winning basketball coach. He greatly enjoyed sports and conducted several basketball camps in Oak Ridge; in 2005, he was inducted into the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame. He served as a volunteer interpreter at Historic Rugby, where he later served as a member and president of the Board of Directors. He became an Eagle Scout shortly after moving to Oak Ridge and was a member of the Naval Reserve. As a community volunteer, Gerald served on the Boards of Directors of Youth Haven, Community Mediation Services, the Oak Ridge Board of Education, serving as chairman for a number of years; the Anderson County School Board, and assisted in fund-raising for the United Way of Anderson County. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge, a lifetime member of the National Education Association, and a lifetime member of FMO. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Mildred Walker; brother, D.G. Walker; and step-son, Lindle Morris. Gerald is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Benedict Walker, of Clinton; son, Clark Walker and wife, Billie, of Oak Ridge; step-daughter, Stacy Morris of Knoxville; sister, Barbara White of Oak Ridge; mother-in-law, Fran Benedict of Cookeville; nieces, Melinda White of Oak Ridge, and Jennifer Riddle of Palm Bay, Fla.; nephews, David and Patrick Walker; sister-in-law, Linda Walker of Tryon, N.C.; special friends, Bill Hills, Cassius and Sharon DHelon, Martin and Galina Ritter, and Ed "Sonny" Shackelford; and special foster children, Sarah and Kim.
