There he determined the molecular structures of some analogues of components of DNA such as 9-[beta]-D-arabinofuranosyladenine and 9-[3-(3-indolyl)-propyl]adenine, the latter a model for protein-nucleic acid interactions. He also worked on the structure of inorganic pyrophosphatase, an enzyme that converts pyrophosphate, the product of reactions involving ATP, into two phosphate ions. Gerard took a position in the Chemistry Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1977 and between 1982 and 1990 worked in the Solid State Division there. Recently he moved his laboratory to the University of Tennessee. He has been recognized and lauded for his work nationally and internationally. His main area of study has been molecular structure by diffraction methods using X rays or neutrons with crystalline specimens. He has outstanding publications using both types of radiation. Gerard worked with his colleagues on the structure of the nucleosome core particle. The structure consists of about 146 base pairs of superhelical double-stranded DNA wrapped around an octomer of histones. Gerard's work helped establish how the packaging of DNAs and proteins occurs. Gerard also pioneered the use of crystal annealing, a method that improved the diffraction ability of some protein crystals. In order to improve crystal diffraction he also grew many protein crystals in space, using both the NASA space shuttles and the International and Mir Space Stations. He enjoyed mentoring students from high school to post doctoral fellows. He wrote chapters for many of the chemistry and crystallography textbooks. He loved music and played the clarinet in both the high school and UMass marching bands. He was also an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church supporting the Haiti Parish Twinning Program. 3. Stephen the person for you or anyone else to contact is Jean Burke. She lives in Oneida. She has done a lot of research on the Scott Co people. The last time I talked to her she didn't have a computer. If you do a Google search her name and address will come up. She likes phone calls. She does get upset with people that don't share with her. 3. Thanks to everyone that emailed me on these names. I just accuried the obituary for them, the ones the funeral home typed out and gave to the preacher, and some of them he wrote out his self. I don't know any of the names, and was just wandering who they all where. I also got I guess 200 funeral card, I guess I probably have 350 - 400 of them now. If youns will email me the names of the ones you are related to, I will try and get a copy of it emailed to you. It would be a good additon to your files, they are something that you don't normaly find. Gilbert Phillips was the preacher for every one of the people on the list. I also got alot of news paper clippings of obits. Stephen
