McGhee, age 59 of the New River Community Mabel Marlow, age 76 of LaFollette, David Arnold Meredith, Sr. Bonnie B. Randolph, age 76, of Williamsburg, KY, Mollie Randolph, age 90 of Georgetown, OH, formerly of Jellico Mabel A. Butcher Rogers, age 80, of LaFollette Phyllis Jane Mayton Ward, age 54, of Jacksboro, Johnnie L. Baird, age 80, of East Wenatchee and a former resident of Leavenworth, died on the morning of Sept. 20 in Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee. He was born on March 15, 1927 to Samuel and Samantha (Smiddy) Baird at Campbell County, Tennessee. The family later moved to Stinking Creek, where he grew up and received his early education. At the age of 12, he began working in the coal mines in Eastern Tennessee, as a water boy and finally worked his way up to becoming a coal miner. He barely survived a mine cave-in and then decided he needed to find other work. He was then employed at Oak Ridge during the 'Manhattan Project' and in 1948 he came to the Leavenworth area. He was employed by F.T. Motteler Orchards and together with his brother, Monroe; they later began working for Ron and Steve Jones Logging. On June 17, 1952 he married Minnie Ruth Schneider at Wenatchee and they made their home in Leavenworth, where they raised their family. Johnnie was then employed by Peshastin Lumber and Box Sawmill and in 1954 he went to work for Buster Hermann's Sun Basin Sawmill at Lake Wenatchee. In 1960 he returned to Peshastin Lumber and Box, where he was a tail sawyer until his retirement in 1988 from W.I. Forest Products in Peshastin. In 2003 he moved to East Wenatchee to make his home. He loved his family immensely and his life revolved around them, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending a considerable amount of time taking his children hunting and fishing, many times going into the Snow Lakes and Enchantments with only a fishing pole and frying pan. He loved tracking honey bees from the waters edge to the hive. He believed in replacing and replenishing items that 'mother nature' provided and always was against any waste of game and forest products. Many times with his family and Janna's dog "Pounder" they hiked the trails around Lake Wenatchee and the Camp 12 Road. He was a member of the National Rifle Association; Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union, Local #2739; Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Mule Deer Foundation. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth in 1996; brother, Leon Baird; sisters, Barbara Richardson and Eldora Baird. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John "Chip" and Bunny Baird of Cashmere; daughter and son-in-law, Janna and Derry Donoghue of East Wenatchee; brothers, Monroe Baird of Peshastin and R.L. Baird of LaFollette; sisters, Evelyn Campbell, Martha Baird, Mary Wilburn, Jean Morgan, Ruth Peters and Leona Smiddy all of Tennessee; grandchildren, Tawnya, Sam, Annie, Derry Donoghue, III, Danielle and Jess; great grandchildren, Tyler, Austin John and Kamea. He claimed Jesus Christ as his savor and looks forward to seeing his beloved family and friends in Heaven. In lieu of a service, his wish was for all to cherish and love one another in the Spirit of Christ. A private family burial was held in the Mt. View Cemetery in Leavenworth. LaFollette Press Oct. 4, 2007 Chase Zane Broyles, beloved son of Tiffany Marie Broyles and Leonard Freeman, entered this world on Sept. 20, 2007, and departed to be with the Lord on Sept. 26. He was preceded in death by his great grandfathers, Willard Broyles and Silas Sweat. He is survived in addition to his mother and father, by loving grandparents, Angleen Broyles, Jerry and Laura Broyles; great grandmothers, Helen Broyles and Bessie Sweat; a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins. LaFollette Press Oct. 4, 2007 George Edward Bruce, age 67 of Jellico passed away on Sept. 25 at the Jellico Community Hospital. He was born Jan. 2, 1940. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing and the great outdoors, and he served his country proudly in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Wiley and Artie Brown Bruce. He is survived by his sons, Keith Bruce and Jason Bruce, of Jellico; daughters, Artie Bruce of New Tazewell, Lee Anna Bruce of FL; grandchildren, Tiffany and Andrew Bruce, Britney Surber, Jacob Jeffers and Justin Baker; a host of family and friends to mourn his passing. She enjoyed reading, working puzzles, talking with people, and she never met a stranger. She also enjoyed spending time with all of her family and friends. He was a very loving, caring brother, and son that cared very much for his family and friends and was very giving and would help anyone he could. Reid was very active in sports. He loved to play golf. He was an avid NASCAR fan. Reid was loved by his peers and classmates. He was very creative and was a practical joker that loved to pull pranks on everyone especially his Mamaw. He enjoyed all kinds of music. LaFollette Press Oct. 4, 2007 David Arnold Meredith, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 27 after a long illness. He was a loving and caring son, husband, father, and papaw. He always put his families and friends well being above his own. He was a member of First Baptist Church of LaFollette, and a decorated Sergeant in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 during the Vietnam War. He was a longtime supporter and season ticket holder of the University of Tennessee, as well as a cancer survivor for 11 years. He had been a successful business owner, and retired as office manager of Dixie Roofing, Inc., of LaFollette. He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold Clay Meredith and an infant sister. He is survived by his wife of almost 45 years, Wanda Hignite Meredith; his mother, Bea Queener Meredith of LaFollette; and son, David "Arnie" Arnold Meredith Jr. and wife MJ Meredith of LaFollette. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, David "Arnie" Arnold Meredith III, Bethany "Ba" Forrest Meredith, James Clay Meredith, and Victoria "Tori" Jane Meredith, all of LaFollette. She was baptized in Cove Lake at the age of 13. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, R.L. Rogers in 2006; son, Robert L. Rogers in 2001; infant granddaughter in 1973, and parents, Theodore Thomas Butcher of Maynardville and Linda Jane Day Butcher of LaFollette. She was employed at Sears and Roebuck in Detroit, MI from which she retired in 1987 and moved back to LaFollette. Thanks Mary for the info. I don't know why I couldn't remember this. It seems like Billy Lawson at one time owned and ran a business right next door to Flonnie's Drive-In. I want to say it was a car lot but not for sure. I was sad to hear of Flonnie's passing away. Glad to hear Loretta still has her Mother's place. I know many people have fond memories of Flonnie's Drive-In. Dan, Flonnie was married to Billy Lawson. Her daughter Loretta is my half sister. Flonnie passed away a couple of years ago but Loretta still owns her mother's place...Even those of us that don't live in Scott County but came down every summer to visit our relatives hold fond memories of Flonnie's. Just thought I'd restore you "gen brain" for the morning. I live in Indiana and still love it when I make trips down...I believe a part of me will always reside in Scott County. Reading about "Flonnie's Drive-in" brought back so many memories. The drive in restaurant was a place where everyone went too from I think the the 50's on up. Any young couple on a date that lived in the southern part of Scott County (Robbins, Elgin, Brimstone, etc.) or the Huntsville, Norma, Straight Fork, Capitol Hill areas and of course some came down from Oneida would stop at Flonnies for hamburger, fries & coke. I remember Cherry Cokes were very popular. Back then there were car hops. There was also a jukebox on the outside under a small porch. The music came through a loud speaker connected to the building. It seems the jukebox belted out music all evening. I know I was there listening to the early songs of the Beatles. Back then Flonnie's Drive-In would be considered a typical 1950's drive-in restaurant. Over the years the place gradually changed I guess with the times and remained popular with the public. The drive-in was always located very close to the junction of Highway 27 & Highway 63. The lady (Flonnie) that owned and ran the place was my Dad's first cousin. Her maiden name was Washam. My Dad's name is Herstle Norman (Buck) Gibson. His mother, Maude Ethel (McCoy) Gibson and Flonnie's mother were sisters. Yes it is Flonnie's in Helenwood. I stay with my cousin just behind the Glass House. I am leaving for Scott County in the morning. I will be there until the 30th. I will check my email from her house. My computer is in the shop here at home so I haven't been able to answer my email as often as I would like. I hope to have it back by the time I get back. Watson, 92, of Oak Ridge, Eleanor Ruth Isaacs Helton, age 67, passed away at her home, surrounded by family, on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, following a courageous four-year battle with cancer. She was born Oct. 3, 1939, at Oak Hill in Somerset, Ky., in the place she would always love best - at home on the farm of her maternal grandparents, C. E. and Annie Laura Avera. She was the youngest of four children born to Ruth and Hugh Isaacs. The farm, with its bounty of space and security, was essential in shaping Eleanor's life and character. It provided her with the space to roam, explore, read and ponder that would remain her style for the rest of her days. In 1944, her father's job with the Southern Railroad brought her family to Oakdale, Tenn., where she spent her elementary school years. In 1953, Eleanor's family moved to Somerset, Ky., in order for her to attend Somerset High School in preparation for college. She was a gifted student with a love of learning and she received many academic awards during high school. She entered Berea College in the fall of 1957 and graduated with a degree in elementary education in 1961. Eleanor taught third grade in Glen Bernie, Md., before marrying her high school sweetheart, Jim Helton, on Dec. 23, 1962. They briefly lived in Lexington, Ky., and then in Arizona where they both taught on the Navajo Indian Reservation. In 1963, they moved to Rome, Ga., where Eleanor taught until starting her family. She gave birth to the couple's three daughters over the next four years. In 1969, Jim's new job brought them to Oak Ridge, a place she dearly loved. Eleanor's chosen profession was that of devoted mother, loving wife, and later, doting Nana to her seven grandchildren. She was active in the Oak Ridge community, volunteering for many organizations including: the Oak Ridge schools; Tri-County Literacy; Recording for the Blind; ADFAC; and the Oak Ridge Boys Group Home. She served as a Stephen Minister through Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member for 25 years, and served as secretary of the administrative board for six years. A self-described individualist and non-conformist, Eleanor was a lifelong Democrat with a passion for reading, music in its infinite variety, and listening to other people's stories. She enjoyed words, her water exercise class, playing games, antiquing, traveling, and spending time with her family. Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Ruth Isaacs, formerly of Somerset, Ky.; and a brother, David Isaacs, also of Somerset. Eleanor is survived by her husband, Jim, of Oak Ridge; daughters, Sinden Cotter, and husband, Tim, of Tullahoma, Tenn.; Tasha Endsley and husband, Dan, of Oak Ridge; and Amy Bzorgi, and husband, Fariborz, of Knoxville; brother, Joe Isaacs, and wife, Roberta, of Somerset, Ky.; sister, Barbara Meece and husband, Leo, of Dayton, Ohio; sister-in-law, Phyllis Isaacs of Somerset, Ky.; brother-in-law, Dr. Walter "Pete" Helton of Cookeville, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Judy Gholson of Cincinnati, Ohio; sister-in-law, Jean Helton of Danville, Ky.; and seven dearly beloved grandchildren: Carson and Emma Cotter of Tullahoma, Tenn.; Granger and Meg Endsley of Oak Ridge; and Devon, McKenna and Bronson Bzorgi of Knoxville. In keeping with Eleanor's wishes, at a later date, the family will gather to scatter her ashes over the family farm in Kentucky. Arrangements by Cremation Options Inc., Knoxville. Thomas Robert Noonan, 95, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at the Oak Ridge Retirement Center. He was born May 2, 1912, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of Thomas Hazard Noonan and Eleanor L'Hommedieu Noonan. He graduated from Lafayette High School in Buffalo, N.Y., in June 1930 and graduated from Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vt., in June 1934. He was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa and editor of his class yearbook. Mr. Noonan attended the University of Buffalo Medical School and graduated into the Army Medical Corps, serving in Africa during World War II. After the war, he taught physiology at the University of Buffalo, N.Y. He then spent time working with a pharmaceutical house and then returned to teaching at the University of Rochester Medical School in Rochester, N.Y. Here, he became associated with the Atomic Energy Commission and eventually went to the University of Tennessee, with the Comparative Animal Research Laboratory in Oak Ridge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Ruth Hill Noonan, on Oct. 29, 2006; and brother, Donald James Noonan, in April 2006. He is survived by nieces: Judith Was and husband, Richard, of Colden, N.Y., Patricia Cumming and husband, Ronald, of Roxbury, N.Y., Barbara Riley and husband, Terry, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Donna Allen and husband, Robert, of Brookhaven, Pa.; five great nieces, four great nephews, and three great-great nephews and five great-great nieces; and special friends, Paul and Sandy Rohwer of Oak Ridge. The family would like to express their gratitude to his caregivers and the staff of the Oak Ridge Retirement Center, for the care and compassion given to Mr. Noonan the past few years. He enjoyed the music of the Big Band Era, was a fan of 8-track tapes, convertibles, and sports cars. He was a loving husband and father, a beloved son and brother, and will be greatly missed. Dave began selling insurance while in Indiana and continued his career after moving to Tennessee. He subsequently opened his own agency, The Ridge Agency, LLC, in Oak Ridge in April of 2004. Baker, 82, John Carr Chadwell, age 58, a resident of Oliver Springs, Verda Lois Fee Grace Rice Moore, age 94, a resident of Oliver Springs, Owen Timothy Miller, age 66, a resident of Oak Ridge, Elsie J. Baker, 82, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007. She departed peacefully, at her home in Clinton, Tenn., surrounded by loving family, including George, her devoted husband of 67 years. Elsie was unwavering in serving and trusting in the Lord. She was born and raised in Pineville, Ky., and remained there with her young son while her husband was away for the duration of World War II. When he returned home, they moved to Harlan, Ky., and welcomed three additional children into their family. She was a dedicated member of the Cawood Pentecostal Church, which she and her husband helped build in the 1960s. After her children were grown, she began a career with the Methodist Mountain Missions. As district manager, she helped provide affordable clothing and furnishings to the less fortunate people of Appalachia. After moving to Clinton in 1990, she became a cherished member of Beechfork Holiness Church, in Wartburg, Tenn., where the congregation simply knows her as "Mom." Elsie was a beloved wife and mother, the heart and soul of a large and loving family, and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her beloved mother and father, Fannie and Charlie Collett; sister, Marie Bradshaw; and darling granddaughter, Tara Nicole Baker. Mr. Chadwell was born in Corbin, Ky. on Aug. 2, 1949. He traveled extensively as a professional musician, moving to Oliver Springs 15 years ago. John served on the Oliver Springs City Council for the past four years. He taught special education at both Norwood Elementary and Norwood Middle schools. He was an active member of Beech Park Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, William Chadwell. She was the middle daughter of seven brothers and sisters, and lived a deeply Christian life on her family's farm. She married Clarence Hurst in 1931. In December 1932, her only child, Peggy Louise Hurst (Eidson), was born in Pineville, Ky. Verda enjoyed a wonderful and warm relationship with her daughter, who was definitely her pride and joy. In 1943, she moved to Oak Ridge, which remained her home for the next 64 years. She was an active member of Central Baptist Church and enjoyed singing hymns while playing her antique pump organ. Wherever she went, she brought a smile to people's faces with her vivacious personality. Her weekly hair appointments were a standing tradition for over 30 years, and it was there that she often shared funny anecdotes of her daily life, bringing everyone to tears with laughter. Even as she approached her 90th birthday, she requested that we not divulge her age because she didn't want people to treat her "like an old person." She was blessed to live a long and healthy life, and always had a wonderfully sharp mind. Verda was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence G. Hurst; daughter, Peggy (Hurst) Eidson; son-in-law, William Robert Eidson; and all of her brothers and sisters, and parents. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Eagles Club in Oak Ridge. She is survived by her three granddaughters, Terri Cotten (Jeff) of Houston, Texas, Staci Susott (Jon) of Indianapolis, Ind., and Kristi Hedberg (Mark) of Asheville, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren; and first cousins, Ada and Red Farnham of Oak Ridge. Mrs. Moore was born March 24, 1913 in Morgan County, Ky. She moved from Kentucky to Tennessee in 1939. After moving to Tennessee she began working as a teacher for the Anderson County Board of Education. She first taught from 1942 until 1945. She then went to work for the Department Of Energy at the K-25 Plant, where she obtained a three-way badge in the Leak Chest area. She later taught at Fork Mountain, Buffalo, Moores and Rosedale schools, all of New River. In 1953 she began teaching at the Norwood Elementary School, where she continued until 1978, leaving to care for her husband, who was ill. Following the death of her husband, Logan Wesley Moore, in 1982, she again started teaching in 1983 and taught until 1988. During her teaching career, she also worked evenings and weekends at J.C. Penney in Oak Ridge. Following her teaching career she was employed at Hallmark Enterprises in Oliver Springs for 16 years. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Moore, by a foster son, Lawrence Green, and by her parents, Elijah and Mary Rebecca Allison Rice. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Jo Hall and husband, John, of Oliver Springs; grandchildren, Kenneth Steven Hall of Oak Ridge, Barry Michael Hall and wife, Jackie, of Knoxville, Thomas Moore of Atlanta, Ga., and Sandra Grace Sullins of Arkansas; great-grandchildren, Wesley Hall and Stefanie Hall, both of Oak Ridge; and, a special niece, Dr. Mary Margaret Anderson of Leesburg, Fla. McNeese, of West Carrollton, born on Jan. 24, 1931 at age 76, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Aug. 24 at her home. Helen was a long-time member of Moraine Heights Baptist Church. She was a loving, giving woman who loved her Lord and was devoted to her family. Her loving spirit will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her. She will remain forever in our hearts. She was a valued member of the 1950 LaFollette Owls undefeated Girl's Basketball Team. This was a legendary team who won the Eastern Region of Tennessee Basketball. It was extraordinary in the sense that this was the first and last time in a Campbell County Girl's Team would have an undefeated season, culminating in a Regional Title. Green, age 80, a resident of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007, at Sun Bridge Health Care Center in LaFollette. Mr. Green was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Kingston, on the Kingston Riverboat Ferry that his parents operated. Mr. Green was a U.S. Navy veteran who served his country during the Korean conflict. After returning from the military, he moved to Ohio where he was president of the Teamsters Local Union in Elyria, Ohio, retiring in 1982 and moving to the Frost Bottom community in Oliver Springs. Mr. Green was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Faye Brown Green; by a son, Edward "Eddie" Wayne Green; by his parents, Reece and Ann Brooker Green; and by several brothers and sisters. He is survived by daughter, Karen A. Collins and husband, Dorr "Bill" W. Born Feb. 12, 1936, at the Homesteads at Crossville, Mrs. Watkins spent most of her life in East Tennessee. Her joy in life came from her family and her faith in the Lord. She will be remembered for the wonderful quilts she made, which are scattered all over the world. Her cooking, baking, and candy-making will be missed by all who knew her, but mostly she will be remembered for her kindness and generosity of spirit. Judy began her career at Loudon County Memorial Hospital in 1977, moved to Charleston, S.C. in 1982, returning to the area in 1983 when she began working at Parkwest Medical Center, where she remained employed for over 20 years. Judy attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oak Ridge since 1954. She was married for a short time and had her daughter, Amy Greer, in 1980. She moved to Oak Ridge in January 1944 with her husband. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. She enjoyed cooking and flower gardening. She also cared for her 37-year old Amazon parrot, Pansy. Mrs. Reneau spent all of her time surrounded by her family in recent years. Born Dec. 17, 1934, in Widemouth, W.Va., Dr. King was a long-time > emergency department physician who practiced for several years at Methodist > Medical Center of Oak Ridge, the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Parkwest > Medical Center in Knoxville, and several other hospitals in the southeast. Dr. > King also served with Epidemic Intelligence Service of the Center for Disease > Control from 1966-1967 and earned a Master of Public Health from Johns > Hopkins in 1971. He was an avid runner, bicyclist and sail boat enthusiast. He > enjoyed traveling, old movies and music, and at the time of his death was learning > to play the guitar. He was the son of the late Lawrence W. King and the late > Pauline Ruble Hartley King. He was married for 34 years to the late Barbara Ann > Briant King, who passed away in 1994.
