Stephen, Since he gave that information himself, it is probably the right year and the other info may be where the mistake is hiding!! A few days ago the question came up about what is a "gritter". I have since found out that my father-in-law used to make and use them. My mother-in-law says the corn after gritting was a little larger than the grits you buy in a store today and they would make the "gritted corn" into what was called a "hoe cake" (sp). Below is an explanation of when corn should be gritted and the website I found the info on. Happy Gritting. Claude "'Gritted Bread' - When green corn has just passed from the tucke, or soft milky stage, and has become too hard for boiling, but is still too soft for grinding into meal, make a "gritter," as follows: Take a piece of tin about 7x14 inches (unsolder a lard pail by heating, and flatten the sides); punch holes through it, close together, with a large nail; bend the sheet into a half cylinder, rough side out, like a horseradish grater; nail the edges to a board somewhat longer and wider than the tin. Then, holding the ear of corn pointing lengthwise from you, grate it into a vessel held between the knees. The meal thus formed will need no water, but can be mixed in its own milk. Salt it, and bake quickly. The flavor of "gritted bread" is a blend of hot pone and roasting ears - delectable! Hard corn can be grated by first soaking the ears over night." Go to the following website to see some pictures of a gritter. http://library.wcu.edu/digitalcoll/kephart/onlineexhibit/Cooking/Corn.htm
When you get right down to it, there NEVER will be a date that will work for all interested people. That being said, I think it's up to the potential attendees to place their own priorities. Not everyone has someone with whom to celebrate Fathers' Day. Not everyone is locked into a rigid way to celebrate it. I made a deal with my kids, many years ago, that said - you are so good about paying attention to me all year long. On Mothers' Day, I'd like to celebrate it by doing what I would like to do, and that doesn't mean standing in line at a restaurant so that you can pay overblown prices for a so-so meal served by a harried staff. You get the picture. It's called thinking outside the box. Especially if this is seen as an annual event, this date might work for one bunch this year and a different date could be set for next year, which might bring in a different but overlapping group of attendees. Or a date could be set by a polling of those who want to attend, then that date would be locked in for future years so that everyone could plan on it, year to year. Make sense? I'm just glad that there are plans afoot for a gathering! Good job, Tim. In a book titled "What My Heart Wants to Tell" By Verna Mae Slone (a book about her Appalachian heritage).....she referred to a gritter being made by punching holes in a piece of tin with a nail. Ears of dried corn were rubbed over the sharp edges made by the nail holes to make cornmeal. They called it gritted bread. So I suppose it was really a grater. Hope that helps.
