    1. [TNSCOTT] BUTRAM, BERTRAM, MARSH, BRADLEY Researchers and Descendants
    2. Anna L Bertram
    3. Calling all BERTRAM (a.k.a BUTTRAM, BUTRAM, BUTTRUM, BUTRUM, etc.) MARSH (a.k.a MASH), and BRADLEY Researchers and Descendants! This is your Golden Opportunity to do something to preserve history and a heritage for thousands of descendants of the men and women buried in the old Bradley Cemetery in White Co., TN! One of them is William BUTRAM, II (1759 - 1853), the brother of the John BUTRAM (married to Jane STEPHENSON) who settled in the part of Morgan Co. that is now Scott Co., TN in the early 1800s. John, along with his sons, Bailey, Andrew, William and James, were large landowners in the New River country. John's brother, William BUTRAM, II, settled in Wayne Co., KY about 1815 and stayed in Wayne Co., KY for several years before moving on to White Co., TN in his old age. John BUTRAM'S brother, William, fought in the Revolutionary War over 225 years ago so we could keep our freedom! William BUTRAM was a friend of another Revolutionary War soldier who spent some time in Wayne Co., KY and went on to White Co., TN. This second soldier was Henry MARSH (c. 1761 - 1859). They lived there in White Co., TN for their last years, surrounded by family and friends. They are buried in an old cemetery among several BRADLEYS who were closely acquainted, perhaps related, to them. This historic cemetery is off the beaten path and in a cattle pasture. The weeds have been over the heads of grown men for some time. These weeds and brambles have been the only thing protecting the graves from more damage from the cattle. You may be a descendant of one of these people, or a spouse of someone who is. The owner of the land has only recently given permission for us to fence the cemetery and to clean it up, then maintain it. What a challenge! What a privilege too! We invite you to join us in these efforts. The first clean-up will be at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 10th. Or you may wish to give money toward the cost of having a fence erected to protect it from the cattle. Or both! Please e-mail me for more details on the clean up and fencing of this cemetery, or to sign up to help. You will be very welcome to donate time and labor or money and we would love to meet you! Sincerely, Anna BERTRAM (Another way to spell BUTRAM, BUTTRAM, BUTTRUM, BUTRUM, etc. abertram@heartoftn.net

    1. [TNSCOTT] AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. GALVANIZED TARS
    2. connie mead
    3. >From Missing Links: AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. GALVANIZED TARS: Confederate Prisoners of War Who Enlisted in the Union Navy. Includes a list of a small number of these people. As the war progressed, and the Union prisoner of war camps continued to expand in numbers, conditions steadily deteriorated in these facilities. Many Confederate prisoners could no longer tolerate the conditions, and decided to take the Oath of Allegiance. Some of these men were recruited into the service of the Union. "Galvanized Yankees" was the term used to denote former Confederate prisoners of war who enlisted in the Union Army. "Galvanized Tars" is the term Terry Foenander uses for Confederate prisoners who took the Oath and joined the Union Navy and Marine Corps. Unlike most of the Galvanized Yankees who were sent west to serve against the Indians, thus avoiding contact with their former comrades on the eastern battlefields, it seems that the majority, if not all, of the Galvanized Tars served on Union Navy vessels or on-shore facilities in the eastern theater. Some used the opportunity to desert and return south, perhaps to fight again, but most served their full period of enlistment in the Navy. http://home.ozconnect.net/tfoen/galvanizedtars.htm --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
