He was born in Clinton, Tenn., on May 26, 1926, to Amon and Carrie Bullock. He served honorably in World War II, storming the beaches of Normandy with the U. S. Army and receiving the Purple Heart, E.A.M.E. Theatre Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and a Battle Star. He retired from Alcoa Aluminum Co., after 39 years of service, and was an avid, enthusiastic gardener. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Atress Bullock; his son, Rick Bullock of Knoxville; his daughter, Janet Bullock Smith of Knoxville; two brothers, Carl and Luther Bullock of Clinton; seven nieces, Carlene Thurmon, Marie Brock, Carrie Lou Rosenbaum, Joyce Padlock, Ginger Reed, Gene Sharp, Faye Parks, and one granddaughter, Stephanie Bullock. Funeral services 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel with Rev. James Tharp officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery for a 11:30 a.m. interment service with full military honors to be given by the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests, memorials may be made to New Life Ministries, Washington Pike, in Knoxville, Tenn. 37917. Survivors wife Sue Shriner of Kingston; daughter Meagan Shriner of Kingston; mother and father in law Mary and Howard Phillips of Kingston; future son in law Charlie Henline of Lenoir City. Dave Shriner joined the environmental sciences division (ESD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in 1974 and conducted pioneering research on the affects of air pollution and acid rain on terrestrial vegetation. He held leadership positions in ESD in a broad range of topics including the impact of synthetic fuels on the environment, regional resource analysis, environmental analyses, and the ecological sciences. Dave had a major influence on national and international science policy while at ORNL. He was a key leader in the nation's national acid precipitation assessment program and completed an assignment as senior policy analyst in the environment division of the office of science and technology policy, executive office of the President, Washington DC. Through his research and leadership accomplishments at ORNL, Dave was respected by the national and international research community and was truly one of the most prominent scientific leaders in his field. He left ORNL in 1998 to join the USDA forest service's north central research station in St. Paul Minnesota. Dave Shriner served as the assistant director of the North Central Research Station from 1998 to 2003. He managed the station's research programs in atmospheric science, landscape ecology, global climate change, short- rotation woody crops, silviculture, and forest inventory and monitoring. He also lead the station's focused research addressing landscape change and forest productivity issues in the Midwest. Dave championed the application of GIS and internet technology in making science results available and relevant to decision makers. While at the north central research station, Dave demonstrated the value of science in addressing the nation's wildfire problems. He prepared the first annual research progress report under the interagency national fire plan. Dave also served on the national task force developing strategic methods of making research investment decisions within the forest service. Dave was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, And a member of XI Sigma Pi, Phi Sigma, Phi Epsilon Phi, and Gamma Sigma Delta. He was preceded in death by his parents Sylva and Margaret Shriner. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lenoir City. Funeral 8pm Sunday July 27, 2003 in Kyker Chapel with Rev. Peggy continuously demonstrated her faith in God by overcoming her illness and encouraging others to trust in the Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond S. Ray of Oak Ridge, in September 1988, and parents, the Reverend Harley G. and Ellen Dye of Swords Creek, Virginia. Peggy was born in Russell County, Virginia, and worked for the Fusion Energy Division of ORNL as a purchasing agent from 1976 to 1986. She was an active member of Royce Baptist Church of Oak Ridge from 1976 to 1996, and enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and playing piano. Peggy is survived by her children, daughter Karen and son-in-law Mike Jarrett of Winter Haven, Florida; son Larry and daughter-in- law Darlene Ray of Cary, NC; son John and daughter-in-law Diane Ray, of Knoxville; and son Scott and daughter-in-law Tracey Ray of Denver, CO. Peggy has 12 grandchildren, Carrie, Ray, Jack, Sara, and Renee Jarrett of Florida, Lindsey, Vanessa, and Allen Ray of North Carolina, Taylor and Jonathan Ray of Knoxville, and Alison and Travis Ray of Denver, CO. Peggy is also survived by nine brothers and sisters, Marie Long, of Virginia, Zella Church of Oliver Springs, Harold Dye of Oliver Springs, Geneva Ellis of Ohio, Wanda Jackson of Oliver Springs, H. G. Dye of Falls Branch, TN, Linda Boyd of Virginia, Dotti Caudill of Cleveland, TN, and Mary Anna Federoff of St. Charles, MO. The Ray family wishes to thank Adventa Hospice, the staff at Farragut Health Care Center, Rainee Plemmons and the staff at Continuum Court Yards, and especially Peggy and Bill Geldmeier for their loving support of Peggy during her recent illness. Friends will be received at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 25, with the funeral following immediately at 8:00 p.m. Graveside service will be held at Oak Ridge Memorial Park at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, July 26. She was married to Henry Mullins and to this union were born 9 children of which 7 are still living. McKinley Mullins, Carroll Mullins, Alfred Mullins, Allen Mullins, Hattie Sexton all of Robbins, Mrs. E.M. Newport of New River, Mrs. E. A. Woldridge of Cleveland, Ohio.
