Born Jan. 23, 1914, in Del Rio, she was the daughter of William Lewis Turner and Emmaline Cashen Turner, both now deceased. Mrs. Webb retired from J.C. Penney Co., where she was a seamstress. According to her family, her hobbies were quilting and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse R. Webb in 1986, and by a son, Robert Daniel Webb in 2000. Mrs. Webb is survived by a son, Jesse William Webb and wife, Linda Gail, of Oak Ridge; four daughters, Hazel Crossno, Mary Jo Cook and husband, Alfred F., and Phyllis K. Webb, all of Oak Ridge, and Emily Sue Helton and husband, William E., of Chattanooga; and by 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The funeral was Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Bobby Mullins officiating. Burial followed at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Frances Wilma Mercer Alvey, 78, of Aiken, S.C., died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Born in Woodriver, Ill., she had lived in Aiken since 1999. Mrs. Alvey is survived by two daughters, Pamela Harmon and Brenda Anne Alvey; four grandchildren, Sandy Spence, Michelle Wallace, Alan Harmon and Becky Harmon; four great-grandchildren, Devin Gunkler, Jessie Gunkler, Jordan Wallace and D.J. Spence; a sister, Marie Bray of Oregon; and by a brother, Raymond Mercer of Alton, Ill. Dorothy Lynn "Dot" Kidd Fischer, 77, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at her home surrounded by her family. Born Dec. 7, 1925, in Knoxville, she was the daughter of Robert Lindsay Kidd and Hattie Carroll Kidd. In 1942, she married Alva Louis Fischer and the following year moved to Oak Ridge. Mrs. Fischer was a member of High Places Community Church and had been a longtime member of Central Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She was a former teacher's aide at Daniel Arthur Rehabilitation Center and, with her husband, was the owner of Jackson Square Antique Shoppe. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority and was voted their Girl of the Year in 1957. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Allen Fischer; a brother, Roy Lynn Kidd; and by a sister, Bonnie Kidd Watson. Mrs. Fischer is survived by her husband of 61 years, A.L. Fischer; four sons Dennis Fischer and wife, Betty, Martin Fischer and wife, Carmen, Ted Fischer and wife, Elizabeth, and Tim Fischer and wife, Patsy, all of Oak Ridge; and by a daughter-in-law, Judy Carson Fischer Mathis of Florida. Nancy Ann Garrison, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, following a brief illness. Born April 16, 1923, in Anderson, S.C., she was the daughter of Thomas Edmond and Nettie McPhail Garrison, both now deceased. Miss Garrison was a graduate of T. L. Hanna Girls High School in Anderson and Winthrop College. She came to Oak Ridge immediately following college graduation in 1943 as an employee of the Tennessee Eastman Corp. and lived and worked in Oak Ridge until her death. She was a member of Welcome Baptist Church in Anderson. In her younger days, Miss Garrison enjoyed hiking and golfing. According to her family, she received great pleasure from travel and had traveled extensively throughout the world. Her family said she had a continuous interest in learning and over the years was involved in many courses, often on a graduate level, at the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Sara Garrison Cox of Belton, S.C., and Lounelle Garrison of Anderson; and by a nephew, James Bartlett Garrison of Anderson. Miss Garrison is survived by one brother, T. Ed Garrison and wife, Juanita, of Anderson; five nieces, Gaye Garrison Sprague and husband, Joel, and Elisabeth Reid Garrison, all of Greenville, S.C., Lee Garrison Smith and husband, Ron, of Anderson, Catherine Anne Garrison Davis and husband, Mark, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Jane Cox Moon and husband, Keith, of Georgetown, S.C., and by three nephews, Thomas E. Garrison III and wife, Angie, and Ronald Cox and wife, Janis, all of Anderson, and Thomas Bailey Cox and close friend, Dan Adcock, of Greenville. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Benjamin "Ben" Douglas Nelson, 23, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at his home in Lenoir City. Born July 12, 1980, in Oak Ridge, he was the son of Douglas Gordon and Carol Elizabeth Colson Nelson of Oak Ridge. Mr. Nelson was a 1998 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. While at Oak Ridge High School, he played on the baseball team for four years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton, a senior at Tennessee Wesleyan College and he served as a student ambassador. Prior to attending Wesleyan, Mr. Nelson attended Roane State Community College for two years, where he was active with the golf team. His family said he enjoyed playing golf and was very active in many sports and a friend to many. He was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan. In addition to his parents, Mr. Nelson is survived by his sister, Angela Michelle Mayfield and husband, Donny, of Athens; his grandparents, Grady and Ruth Colson of Knoxville and Betty Aird of Oak Ridge; his stepgrandmother, Joyce Crabtree of Decatur; and by his great-grandmother, Lula Nelson of Knoxville. Box 40, Attention Development Office, Athens, TN Alice Miles Thurmond, 84, of Rockford, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville after a brief illness. Born Feb. 26, 1919, in Thompson, Ga., she was the daughter of Eulian Malone Miles and Alice Swan Miles, both now deceased. Her family later moved to Lake City, Fla., where she graduated valedictorian from Lake City High School. She attended Florida State University for a term before flying to Puerto Rico to marry her fiancé, Kenneth Thurmond, now deceased, who had been assigned there with the U.S. Forestry Service. They lived in a stone house in the forest region near the El Yunque Mountain range for two years, before returning to the United States to start a family. After a brief time in Washington, D.C. and Oxford, Miss., with the forestry service, her husband took a job with Tennessee Valley Authority and they moved to Norris. During World War II, her husband was in the Pacific Theatre. Mrs. Thurmond took her children to live in Lake City, Fla., with her father until the war ended. Shortly after the end of the war, she returned to Norris with her family. In 1956, they started a State Farm Insurance Agency and moved to Oak Ridge, where they lived for 42 years. A charter member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Norris, Mrs. Thurmond continued her involvement at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where she was president of the Altar Guild for several years. After her children left home, she volunteered as a Pink Lady at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. According to her family, Mrs. Thurmond loved all things beautiful and she was domestically gifted. Her family said she excelled in cooking and canning from her annual garden, taking care of the home and entertaining others. Her family said her gifts of hospitality and generosity spilled over onto all who knew her. According to her family, she had many memories from their camper, with which she pursued her love of the water with visiting friends and family at Watts Bar Lake. She also took several trips out West and many trips to visit family in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Her family said good health and a love of outdoors encouraged spring photography trips in search of elusive, rare wild flowers in the Smoky Mountains. Her family said she enjoyed church, her friends, bridge and reading, in her later years. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Hopkins. Mrs. Thurmond is survived by two daughters, Pati Woodhull and husband, Alec, of Rockford, and Aynn Gehron and husband, Dick, of Charlotte, N.C.; her stepmother, Del Miles of Lake City, Fla.; and by six grandchildren, Shelby Trusley, Lauren Clevenger and Kenny Woodhull, all of the Knoxville area, Rich Gehron of Wilmington, N.C., and Ali Crotts and Jake Gehron of Charlotte. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and a nephew, Mark Hopkins of Tallahassee, Fla. THURMOND, ALICE MILES - of Rockford, homegoing took place at dawn Thursday, August 21, 2003. She died at Ft. Sanders Hospital, Knoxville, after a brief illness. Alice was born to Eulian Malone Miles and Alice Swan Miles on February 26, 1919, in Thompson, Ga. The family later moved to Lake City, Fla., where she graduated Valedictorian from Lake City High School. She attended Florida State University for a term before flying to Puerto Rico to wed her fiancé, Kennet h, who had been assigned there with the U.S. Forestry Service. They lived comfortably in a stone house in the forest region near the great El Yunque Mountain range for two years before returning to the states to start their family. After a brief time in Washington, D.C. and Oxford, Miss.. with the Forestry Service, Ken took a job with TVA and the family moved to Norris, Tenn. During World War II, Ken was in the Pacific Theatre. Alice took the children to live in Lake City, Fla., with her newly widowed father until the war ended. Shortly after the war ended, Alice returned to Norris, Tenn., with her family. In 1956, they started a State Farm Insurance Agency and made their final move to Oak Ridge, Tenn., where they lived for 42 years. Charter member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Norris. Alice continued her dedicated involvement at St. Stephens, Oak Ridge, where she was President of the Altar Guild for several years. After the children left home, she volunteered as a Pink Lady at Oak Ridge Hospital. ,Lover of all things beautiful and domestically gifted, Alice exulted in her immediate and extended family life, excelling in cooking and canning from her annual garden, taking care of the home and entertaining for others. Her gifts of hospitality and generosity spilled over onto all who knew her. Memorable travels occurred in their camper. With it, Alice pursued her love of the water and visiting friends and family at Watts Bar Lake, took several trips out West and many trips to visit family in North Carolina, Gerogia, and Florida. Good health and a love of outdoors encouraged spring photography trips in search of elusive, rare wild flowers in their beloved Smokey Mountains. She continued to enjoy her church, friends, Bridge and reading in her later years. Alice is survived by two daughters, Pati Woodhull and husband, Alec of Rockford, Tenn., Aynn Gehron and husband, Dick of Charlotte, N.C.. She leaves love and laughter with her step mother, Del Miles of Lake City, Fla.; six grandchildren, Shelby Trusley, Lauren Clevenger, Kenny Woodhull, all of the Knoxville area, Rich Gehron of Wilmington, N.C., Ali Crotts and Jake Gehron of Charlotte, N.C.; eleven great-grandchildren and nephew, Mark Hopkins of Tallahassee, Fla.; one sister, Geraldine Hopkins is deceased. She was a member of Clinton First Baptist Church where she had been active in the Adult C Sunday school department and had served as secretary for the Sunshine class in years past. She retired from Am South Bank, formerly known as Union Peoples Bank in Clinton, where she had worked as a bank teller. In addition, she had worked for Judge Joe Magill in the Anderson County Executive office. She was also an alumna of Tennessee Wesleyan College. She was born June 15, 1921 in Clinton. Her father, Ernest A. Hollingsworth served as County Court Clerk in Anderson County from 1925-1937. Her grandfather was the late Dr. Harvey Hollingsworth who served during the civil war and doctored many fellow veterans after the civil war. Her family heritage has long been a part of the Anderson County area. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Wayne Randolph McClellan, 75, of Mooresville, N.C., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville. Born Aug. 4, 1928, in Gate City, Va., he was the son of Walter and Monnie Vermillion McClellan, both now deceased. Mr. McClellan served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1947 to 1952 in the Mediterranean during World War II and in the Korean conflict. He retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant after 35 years as a supervisor in the metal fabrication division. According to his family, Mr. McClellan truly enjoyed his work and received numerous awards and commendations. He also worked for Pathway Bellows. His family said he enjoyed yardwork, reading, traveling, horse racing, tinkering with tools and repair work for family and friends. According to his family he was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Campbell. Mr. McClellan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Lehman McClellan; a daughter, Jennifer Warren and husband, Stephen, of Mooresville; a son, Tom McClellan and wife, Rebekah, of Cleveland; and by two brothers, Richard McClellan and Octor McClellan, both of Kingsport. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Robert McClellan of Chattanooga, Candice Reed of Nashville, Kyle Warren a student at Appalachian State University, and Rachel Warren of Mooresville; several nieces and nephews; and by a sister-in-law, Norma. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, in the chapel of Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville with the Rev. Ike Kennerly officiating. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the charity of the donor's choice. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. James Bradford Vannoy, 59, of Lake City, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Jan. 20, 1944, in Claiborne County, he was the son of Irene Vannoy Graham of Gainsville, Va., and James H. Vannoy, now deceased. Mr. Vannoy was a member of Island Home Baptist Church and was a graduate of Powell Valley High School. He was on the board of directors for the Anderson County Co-Op and the Anderson County Soil Conservation Board. He had worked for 30 years as a dairy farmer and in later years, he boarded horses on his farm. In addition to his mother, Mr. Vannoy is survived by his wife, Glenia Brooks Vannoy; a daughter, Amanda Evans and husband, Neil, of Clinton; a son, Kelly Vannoy and special friend, Amanda Rodriguez, of Chattanooga; two sisters, Sandra Lowry and husband, Charles, of Gainsville, and Brenda Todd and husband, Barry, of Nokesville, Va.; a brother, John M. Vannoy and wife, Carolyn, of Bessmer City, N.C.; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Calvin Braden officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Norris Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Jeanne Wayne Cornetto, 81, of Washington, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at Washington Hospital. Born Feb. 23, 1922, Charleroi, Pa., she was the daughter of Max and Anna Wayne, both now deceased. Mrs. Cornetto was a 1939 graduate of Charleroi High School. She later moved to Washington, where she lived for more than 50 years. She worked for G.C. Murphy Co. in its downtown Washington store for several years. She later owned and operated Jeanne's Print Shop from 1959 to 1984, when she retired. In 1984, Mrs. Cornetto helped start Washington County Literacy Council and remained involved until the time of her death. Throughout the years, she handcrafted hundreds of greeting cards for her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Cornetto, and by a brother, David Wayne. Mrs. Dobyns lived most of her life in Oak Ridge where she was a professional organist and pianist. She mostly entertained at the Mayflower Restaurant, Oak Ridge Country Club and with the David Blessing's Dance Band. She was active in the Organizers Organ Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Dobyns. Mrs. Dobyns is survived by a niece, Joy Adams of San Diego, Calif., and by two nephews, Eddie Martt of Columbus, Ohio, and Richard Wallace of St. Louis, Mo. For those of you who have Mindspring like I do there is a virus going around that is being sent out from what looks like Mindspring Customer Service but it's not....If you get an e-mail that says it is from an Earthlink or Mindspring Administrator and the subject says "your account" don't open it.. .I have gotten 3 since yesterday but my virus protection program caught and deleted them...
