Mrs. Stockton worked at the Village Restaurant for many years before retiring at age 77. She was best known at the restaurant for her biscuits and coconut and chocolate pies. She had previously worked at the grill at Walgreens for 15 years and for a brief time at the Cheese Crock, both in the old Downtown Shopping Center. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and a member of the Lonely Hearts Sunday School Class. Born Jan. 9, 1917, in Livingston, she was the daughter of Minnie and Mayhue West. She and her husband Jesse Fowler Stockton were married on Nov. 30, 1935, and they moved to Oak Ridge in 1950. Her husband died in 1991. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward H. Stockton, her brother, Houston West, and a great-granddaughter, Katie Elise James. Mrs. Stockton is survived by seven children, Lee Ann Sweatt of Trussville, Ala., Jackie Nunley and her husband, Bob, of Gladwin, Mich., Marshall Stockton of San Francisco, Calif., Linda Benson and her husband, Johnny, of Knoxville, Barbara Moore of Oak Ridge, Mike Stockton and his wife, Debbie, of Houston, Texas, and Donna Roth and her husband, Fred, of Brighton; and by a daughter-in-law, Billie Stockton of Las Vegas, Nev. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and several other relatives. The funeral will be at 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Steve McDonald officiating. Lloyd Gulley III, 33, of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville. Born Nov. 10, 1969, in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of Brenda Rutherford of Oak Ridge and Lloyd Gulley Jr. of Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Gulley had lived in Oliver Springs since 1979 and was a self-employed carpenter. He attended the Family Worship Center in the Stephens community in Morgan County. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Butch Patrick Gulley and Danny Wayne Gulley; his paternal grandfather, Lloyd Gulley Sr.; and by his maternal grandparents, Sherman York and Gertrude Moore. Mr. Mattus served in the U.S. Army and was employed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he was a chemist. Morton Alva Lee, 81, of Melbourne, Fla., died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Fla., after an extended illness. Born July 25, 1922, in Bearden, he was a 1949 graduate of the University of Tennessee. During World War II, he was a member of the Army Air Force and served overseas in England. Mr. Lee had been a resident of Melbourne since 1986, and lived in Oak Ridge from 1950 to 1977, where he was employed as an auditor for 30 years with the Department of Energy until his retirement. He served on the Boys Club of Oak Ridge board of directors and was the secretary/treasurer for many years. The National Boys Club presented him with the Boys Club Medallion for "unusually devoted service for helping boys to achieve a fuller, richer life through the positive guidance of the Boys Club." While living in Oak Ridge, Mr. Lee was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and was also a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Palm Bay, Fla. >From The Oak Riidger 17 Sep 2003 Thelma "June" Robbins, 74, of Kingston, formerly of Clinchco, Va., and Dayton, Ohio, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at her home after a long illness.She was the daughter of Willard Webb and Maudie Jordan of Clinchco.Mrs. Robbins was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Kingston. She grew up in Clinchco and Woodway, Va., where she met her husband. She moved to Dayton in the 1940s to work for the Veteran's Administration and she and William George "Bill" Robbins of St. Charles, Va., were married in Dayton in 1950.After her children entered school, Mrs. Robbins worked at and became manager of Traveler's/Travelodge Motel and retired after more than 15 years of service. Upon retirement in 1977, she moved with her husband to Kingston. They also maintained a residence in Englewood, Fla., where they spent the winter months.According to her family, Mrs. Robbins enjoyed swimming and competing with the women's basketball team at Pennington Gap High School, where she graduated in 1947.During the lean years in Ohio, Mrs. Robbins became a self-taught seamstress, who made her own clothes, often from other pieces of clothing. She also made ballet suits for the girls in her daughter's dance class, and a full suit and play costumes for her son. Her family said retirement allowed her creative nature to flourish, producing beautiful stained glass pieces and jewelry creations, which she showered on her family and friends.In addition to her husband of 53 years, Mrs. Robbins is also survived by two children, William "Ralph" Robbins of New York, N.Y., and Lisa Gale Robbins of Kingston; four siblings, Elizabeth "Mae" Mullins, her twin, of Bristol, Va., Betty Howard of Sarasota, Fla., Frankie Fields McMillan of Okeechobee, Fla., and Jimmy Fields of Burkburnett, Texas; and by several other family members.Her family said many will miss her wonderful smile, personality and quick wit, and she touched the lives of many, including Bill Moody of New York, Bill McMillan of Okeechobee, Joe Scolaro of Sarasota, Ralph and Mary Helen Cox of Pennington Gap, Va., the Rev. He served in the U.S. Army and was an oceanographer attached to a special engineering division during bomb testing at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean. He was a research chemist at Union Carbide Nuclear Division at the K-25 site until his retirement in 1984. According to his family, Mr. Wendolkowski was a man of diverse interests, including golfing, gardening, woodworking, and computers. He was an active member of Little Leaf Baptist Church in Oliver Springs, where he served the church as chairman of the Trustee Board and was a member of the choir. He was instrumental in overseeing the construction of the present Little Leaf Baptist Church building and was active in the Knoxville District Baptist Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto Lide and Pearl McPhail Lide, and by three sisters, Dorothy Edwards, Eva Bull and Eliza Carolina. Mr. Lide is survived by his wife, Catheline Griffin Lide; two sons, David Fritts of Oliver Springs and Russell Fritts of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Cherry Ivy and husband, Charles Ivey Jr., of Oak Ridge and Gloria Porch and husband, James, of Tuskegee, Ala.; and by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Both relocated from Wayne Co., KY to White Co., TN in their last years. What to wear? TOOLS: hoes, rakes, spades and shovels, pruners, loppers, clippers, sling hooks, weed eaters, push lawn mowers. (No chain saws needed this time.) "Gordon" Godfrey Jr., 69, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born in Greenville, S.C., he was the son of T. Gordon and Elizabeth Young Godfrey, later Mardre, both now deceased. Mr. Godfrey attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and later graduated from Clemson University with bachelor's and master's degrees in 1957 and 1959. He retired in 1997 after 38 years as a materials engineer at both Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. After his wife's death in 1999, Mr. Godfrey became a volunteer at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, having developed a strong attachment to the people who had cared so well for her, according to his family. He volunteered for nearly four years, and his family said he was dedicated to being "at work" even when he was very ill. His family said he befriended everyone he met there including patients, family members, and staff, and derived intense joy from helping people when they needed it most. According to his family, Mr. Godfrey was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and he took pride in his grandchildren and enjoyed seeing his children experience parenthood. In addition to his parents, Mr. Godfrey was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Proctor Godfrey. Mr. Godfrey is survived by three daughters, Gayle M. Godfrey of Oak Ridge, Greta Godfrey Miller of Knoxville, and Gwyn Godfrey Snider and husband, Todd, of North Augusta, S.C.; and by two grandchildren, Erich Thomas Miller of Oak Ridge and Melanie Elaine Snider of North Augusta. He was an outgoing and friendly person with an imaginative sense of humor, quick with a joke and was happiest when with family and friends fishing and playing golf. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Smith Woody; two sons, John Howard Woody and wife, Geneva Collen Woody, and Michael Wayne Woody, all of Oak Ridge; and by his daughter, Laura Jane Morris and husband, Bruce Morris, of Anderson County. He is also survived by a brother, Max Woody and wife, Sarah, of Hendersonville; three grandsons, John Howard Woody Jr. and wife, Melissa, and their son Lee Lamance and daughter, Vanesa Lamance, James Herbert Woody and wife, Donna, and their daughter, Mercedes, all of Oak Ridge, and Brandon Williams and wife, Kristy, of Sweetwater; and by a sister-in-law, Madge E. Smith and son, Charlie Smith, of Lexington, Ky. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at Weatherford Mortuary. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. John Howard Woody Jr., James Woody, Bruce Morris, Brandon Williams, Charlie Smith and Max Woody Jr. will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. De Wilda Meyer Wilson, 78, a long time resident of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Jan. 11, 1925, in Knoxville, she was the daughter of Harvey G. and Helen Pankella Meyer, both now deceased. Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker and a graduate of the University of Tennessee. She was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a hospital corpsman. According to her family, she enjoyed visiting heart patients at the hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters. Mrs. Wilson is survived by her husband of 56 years, Hubert N. Wilson; two sons, Harvey Wilson of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Paul Wilson and wife, Sheila, of Seneca, S.C.; a daughter, Susan Wilson of Nashville; a granddaughter, Alicia Najeeullah of Nashville; and by a brother-in-law, James C. Wilson and wife, Ann, of Matthews, N.C. A private funeral will be held with the Rev. Boyd Carter officiating. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Knoxville.
