She was born November 25, 1936, in Malden, Mass., to the late Robert and Idella Bowie Hargreaves. She was a homemaker and a member of the Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi International, Alpha Beta Council of Knoxville. She was a graduate of Malden High School. Her hobbies included quilting, needlepoint, countered cross- stitching and reading. She was a member of the Wellness Community of East Tennessee and the American Cancer Society. She was the first female to graduate in civil engineering at the University of Kentucky in 1948. She worked in Oak Ridge at ORNL with the Cyclotron Design Group. Flodstrom, 66, of Oak Ridge, ============================================ Louise Cate Fowler, 88, of Clinton, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Aug. 24, 1915, in Knoxville, she was the daughter of U.S. Cate and Ruby Bankston Cate. Raised in Knoxville, she graduated from Knoxville High School in 1933 and from the University of Tennessee in 1937. In 1939, she married her college sweetheart, George Robertson Fowler. She received a master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1963. After raising her family and teaching in the public schools in Tennessee, New York and Michigan, she retired to Anderson County in 1971. According to her family, Mrs. Fowler was accomplished in needlework and won many prizes for her quilts and embroidery. She also made vestments and banners for her church, First Presbyterian Church. Two of her brothers, Jeff B. Cate and Ray E. Cate, also died earlier. In addition to her husband of 64 years, Mrs. Fowler is survived by three daughters, Frances Fowler of Hamilton, Ohio, Marianne Fowler of Alexandria, Va., and Susan Fowler of Clinton; a brother, Kern Cate of Hiram, Maine; three sisters-in-law, Joyce Fowler of Knoxville, Carolyn Cate of Maine and Bertha Fowler of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Alex Stuart officiating. A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville. The family requests any flowers be sent to the church Thursday morning. Charles "June Bug" Douglas Jr., 54, of Knoxville, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at his home. Mr. Douglas was a member of the Believers Voice of Deliverance Church in Harriman and was one of the original members of the 5 Star Jubilee and The Douglas Family Singers. He was a construction worker and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillie Mae Douglas. He was also a United States Army Veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. Gene worked for Armour & Company for 25 years, and for East Tennessee Packing Company. Byrge, 64, of Clinton, ========================================================= >From The Oak Ridger 6 Oct 2003 Mildred Audrey Day, 82, of the Claxton community, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at her home, with her family by her side. Born July 14, 1921, in Whitley County, Ky., she was the daughter of Joe and Lela Rollins Elliott. Mrs. Day was originally from Rockholt, Ky., and moved to Anderson County in 1950. According to her family, she was a devoted wife and mother, and she also raised several foster children. Her family said she enjoyed sewing, painting and crocheting, and that she was a favorite among local crafters. Mrs. Day was a longtime member of Batley Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Leon Day, and by two sons, Gary Elliott and Willis Ray Meadows. Mrs. Day is survived by two sons, Cleve Day and wife, Laurie, of Claxton, and David Day and wife, Lisa, of Knoxville; a daughter, Oletha Day of Clinton; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Elliott and wife, Christine, of Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Lillian Day of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews. The funeral was Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Luke Kidwell officiating. Burial followed at Batley Baptist Church cemetery. Jasper L. Condra, 77, of Oliver Springs, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at his home. Born Sept. 13, 1926, in South Pittsburgh, he was the son of William Thomas Condra and Etta Garner Condra. Mr. Condra lived in Oliver Springs since 1964. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was a retired truck driver after working for 35 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Catherine Condra; a son, Paul David "Tommy" Condra; and by two brothers, James Condra and Vernon Condra. Mr. Condra is survived by his wife, Betty Thacker Condra; three daughters, Jeanette Moses of Ooltewah, Mary Bunch and husband, Clarence, of Dayton, Ohio, and Jean Ferguson and husband, Bill, of Oliver Springs; a son, Dayma Condra and wife, Teresa, of Oliver Springs; and by two stepdaughters, Diane McMahan and husband, Dennis, of Greenville, Ill., and Deborah Titus and husband, Ronald, of Maryville. Mary Nell Jackson, 73, of Oliver Springs, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Feb. 13, 1930, in Big Sandy, she was the daughter of Mabel Turner Wheatley. Mrs. Jackson was a longtime Oliver Springs resident. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Elmer Wheatley Sr., and by her husband, Labron Jackson. Mrs. Jackson is survived by two stepsisters, Patricia Weber and San Dimas, Calif., and Naomi Wheatley of Big Sandy; a stepbrother, Elmer Wheatley Jr. of Anniston, Ala.; an aunt, Velma Evans of Big Sandy; and by a sister-in-law, Vivian Hale of Oliver Springs. The funeral was Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Garvan Walls officiating. A graveside service was to be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at Anderson Memorial Gardens on Oliver Springs Highway. Helen Sally Cates Pierce, of Asbury Place in Maryville, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003. She was the daughter of R.C. and Ida Myrtle Cates. Mrs. Pierce was a homemaker and lived in Tennessee most of her life. She owned and operated Pierce Grocery in the Central community between Elizabethton and Johnson City for 12 years during the 1960s and 1970s. Mrs. Pierce lived with her daughter, Margaret Reece and husband, Bill, and their daughter, Sandy Reece, all of Edmonton, Ky., and Knoxville. She was a Baptist and had taught many children's Sunday school classes over the years. Her husband, Harry Dugger Pierce; her sister-in-law, Tina Simerly; three sisters, Thelma Cates, Ethel Pierce and Ruth Campbell; a brother, L.D. Cates; and by a son-in-law, Charles Davis. In addition to her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, Mrs. Pierce is survived by three daughters, Virginia Davis of Oak Ridge, Norma Rhea and husband, Gary, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Connie Roberts and husband, Bill, of Unicoi; a son and his wife, Randal and Linda Brown Pierce of Maryville; two sisters Gladys Reece of Hampton, and Leona Stout of Cumberland, Va.; and by 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral was Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home in Elizabethton with the Rev. Leland Lyon officiating. Janet Lyon, granddaughter of Mrs. Pierce, provided the music. Burial followed in the Pierce Cemetery. Her grandsons served as pallbearers. He was a member of the LaFollette United Methodist Church, a veteran of World War II, and a long time employee of Balloff's Department Store in LaFollette. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Jones Bartley; parents, White and Luda, sisters, Marie Condrey and Jean Carden; brothers-in-law, Floyd Condrey, and J.T. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church, LaFollette Masonic Lodge #623 F. & A.M., Kerbella Temple & Shriners, and the Lyk-Nu Gang. He was affiliated with the Lost Squadron in restoring the World War II P-38 "Glacier Girl." He also served in the Army Aircorp. An avid woodworker and fisherman, he also loved restoring antique cars. Born June 25, 1931, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of Lewis Lively and Anna West Lively. Mrs. Neal was a lifelong resident of the area. She and her husband, Ardell Neal, now deceased, founded, owned and operated Neal's Jewelry of Oliver Springs. The business is now over 50 years old and continues to be operated by family members. Mrs. Neal was a member of Tuppertown Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Lively and the Rev. Hildon Lively; and by a sister, Minnie Seiber. Mrs. Neal is survived by a son, Marsie Neal of Oak Ridge; three daughters, Juanita Patrick and husband, Mike, and Teresa Pride and husband, Mike, all of Oliver Springs, and Wilda Cross; seven grandchildren, Gary Ashley and wife, Theresa, Larry Ashley and wife, Edwina, Verlon Cross II, Brad Neal and wife, Chanda, Jonathan Neal and wife, Christina, Anita Wright and Erica Walker; and by 10 great-grandchildren, Chelsea Ashley, Riley Ashley, Shane Ashley, Brandy Neal, Ivy Neal, Tesa Neal, Jonathan Neal, Ronni Wright, Toni Wright and Alaysia Walker. She is also survived by three sisters, Linda Carter of Oak Ridge, Mary Langley and husband, J.B., of Oliver Springs, and Lela Johnson of Illinois; two brothers, Benny Lively of Coalfield and Robert Lively and wife, Armetha, of Coalfield; and by several nieces and nephews. Myra Halburnt, Marty Ellis, Debbie Bunch, Skip Starnes, John Davis and Sharon Patterson are considered special friends. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Don Daugherty, the Rev. Ralph Wilson and the Rev. Mike Pride officiating. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Adcock Cemetery in Coalfield. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Raymond Lee Hill Sr., 76, of the Claxton community, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospice in Halls. Born May 23, 1927, in Rogersville, he was the son of Oba and Birdie Russell Hill. Mr. Hill was a U.S. Navy veteran, who served during World War II. While in the military he served on the USS Randolph and later in the U.S. Navy Reserves for four years, beginning in 1945-1956. He was a former employee of Martin Marietta Energy Systems, where he had worked at X-10, the Oak Ridge K-25 site and the Y-12 Plant. He later went to work for Dupont in Florida from 1956-1959. He became a general contractor and retired as a brick mason. After retiring he became active with food ministries, nursing home ministries and helped with the building of churches and homes in his community. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sylvia Hill. Mr. Hill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Orrick Hill of Clinton; four daughters, Lynda Mitchell and husband, Sam, of Knoxville, Phyllis Mosley of Georgia, Teresa Hill of Clinton, and Tammy Scott and husband, David, of Nashville; five sons, Raymond Hill Jr. of Rogersville, Jimmy Hill and wife, Joyce, of Oak Ridge, Terry Hill and wife, Kathy, of Georgia, and Mike Hill and wife, Sharon, and Mark Hill and wife, Susan, all of Claxton; and by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Born July 6, 1916, in Hastings, Neb., and raised in Lincoln, Neb., she was the daughter Ray M. Leslie and Blanche Murphy Leslie. A graduate of the University of Nebraska, Mrs. Knight worked in the Nebraska public school system before moving to Oak Ridge in 1944 with her husband, Robert L. Knight, now deceased. She was a teacher of Latin and English at Oak Ridge High School from 1964 until her retirement in 1982. Mrs. Knight was a member of the First United Methodist Church from its founding until her death. She was also an active member of PEO, the 43 Club and the local Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Knight is survived by three children, Donald R. Knight and wife, Marilyn, of Spartanburg, S.C., Thomas L.N.
