(PEG) - age 85 of Inskip, died Sunday October 19, 2003. She was a founding member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Mrs. Ball worked as a professional secretary for the Department of the Army during World War II in Newfoundland, the AEC in Oak Ridge, and after working to raise two daughters, she continued her career until her retirement at TVA. She was the widow of James W. Ball. She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Cottrell and husband, Keith of Knoxville and Barbara Ball Merritt of St. Louis MO; grandchildren, Lareesa Merritt of St. Louis, Lt. JG Sean Merritt of Virginia Bch, VA, Keith Cottrell Jr., of Knoxville, and Eric Cottrell and wife, Jequetta of Maynardville; and great granddaughter, Abigail Grace Cottrell. A memorial service will be held 12:00 noon Wednesday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kay Reynolds officiating. A private entombment will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 5401 Tiffany Rd., Knoxville, TN 37912. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. She was a member of Hinds Creek Baptist Church. She had worked as a looper at Magnet Hosiery Mills in Clinton before plant closing. Preceded in death by parents; Carson & Clara Cox Foster; brother, Sherwood & Seberan Foster; sister, Margaret York. Shirley was born February 9, 1937 in Anderson County. GULLEY, MARGIE ANNA ROSE PICKEL - age 71, of Clinton passed away Monday, October 20, 2003 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge after a lengthy illness. She was born February 10, 1932 in Kingston. She was employed by Anderson County Schools as an elementary teacher and later as Director of Pupil Personnel of the Anderson County school system. Before retirement, she also was employed at Oliver Springs Elementary as a guidance counselor. She was a graduate of Roane County High School & received her BS degree from the University of Tennessee and her Masters degree from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. She was loved by all of her former students and co-workers. Her love of music led her to teach piano lessons and to play the organ & piano for many years at South Clinton Baptist Church. Preceded in death by parents, Thomas Wesley Pickel & Mae Jackson Pickel. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home of Clinton in charge of all arrangements. GROOMS, BLANCHE WILSON- born March 12, 1912, was the child of Audley Rhea ("A.R.") Wilson and Edna Lewis Moore Wilson, at 407 Dawson Place, south Knoxville died Sunday evening, October 19, 2003 at the Little Creek Sanitarium at the age of 91. The family was well-known and active in the old Graystone Presbyterian Church. Blanche was a charter member and Ruling Elder at Parkway Presbyterian, Sang in choirs and was active in Women of the Church throughout her life. In retirement, she worked with FISH of Knox County and was a Red Cross volunteer at Parkwest Hospital. She attended old Knoxville High School, graduated from Young High School in 1930, attended Maryville College and Draughan's Business School, and graduated from U of Tennessee with B.A. in Education. Blanche was married to Gordon A. Grooms of Seaman, Ohio at Graystone Presbyterian Church, May 24, 1935. The couple met as students at Maryville College. Upon marriage, Blanche Grooms moved to southern Ohio. In 1943 the family moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn, where Mr. Grooms was employed by Eastman Kodak and later Union Carbide. For several intervening years, the family lived in Florida, Moore Haven and then Inverness, where Mr. Grooms was a high school principal and she was the school secretary. Blanche taught in Knox County schools - Galbreath '32-'35 and later at several others including Hardin Valley, Ball Camp, Ridgedale, Cedar Bluff and Karns and retired in 1973. The family purchased and operated a large farm in the HardinValley-Solway community in 1954 and remained there until Blanche moved to Shannondale's Retirement and Assisted Living facilities. In February, 2003, she moved to Little Creek Sanitarium on Northshore Drive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon A. Grooms, siblings ,Eugene M. Wilson, Theron D. Wilson, Marshall A. Wilson, Catherine Wilson Kennette, Willett R. Wilson, H. Clark Wilson, and Dr. Frank E. Wilson. Survivors: sister, Mary Wilson Clark of Maryville; children, Gaye Grooms Greer Honeycutt and husband Kenneth E. of Knoxville, Gary A. Grooms and wife Ann McGuire Grooms of Gainesville, Fla., Dennis P. Grooms and wife Linda East Grooms of Harriman, and Dale A. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Lee and Dolly Morgan Quilliams; and by two sisters, Ruth Whitson and Gladys Cardwell. Mr. Quilliams is survived by his wife, Patsy Sue Whitson Quilliams; two daughters, Kay Edmonds and husband, Doug, and Ladeana Roberts and husband, Charley; his son, Johnny Lyn Quilliams; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and by four sisters, Alberta Lewelling, Stella Allen, Cleo Lewelling and Geraldine Perkenson. Julia "Judy" Lowe Butler, 77, of Kingston, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. She was the daughter of Grover and Cleo Lowe. Mrs. Butler was a lifelong resident of East Tennessee and an avid UT Volunteer fan. She retired from Martin Marietta with 42 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Herman Reed Butler Jr.; two brothers, Glen Murph Lowe and Donald Leon Lowe; her twin sister, Alta Curtis; a sister, Imogene Berry; a step-sister, Virginia Hodges; and by her aunt, Flora Lowe. Mrs. Butler is survived by four daughters, Pat Helms of Knoxville, Susan Butler of Kingston, Kathy Woodard and husband, Winn, of Springfield, and Lisa Light and husband, Eddie, of Clinton; a sister, Louisa Hodge of Knoxville; and by nine grandchildren, Chad Helms and wife, Pamela, and Jeana Watkins and husband, Jonathan, all of Knoxville, Chris Helms, Eddie Light and Ashley Light, all of Nashville, Jason Woodard and Beth Woodard, both of Springfield, and Shelby Light and Samantha Light, both of Clinton. Leffew, 65, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following a lengthy illness. He was the son of Ronald and Lena Bell Leffew, both now deceased. Mr. Leffew was a Baptist and his family said he enjoyed gospel and bluegrass music. According to his family, Mr. Leffew self-taught himself to play guitar by ear. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Davis Leffew; two sisters, Betty Jo Stubbs and Nel Mae Bailey; and by one nephew, Ronnie Stubbs. Mr. Leffew is survived by two brothers, Bill Leffew and wife, Carol, of Oak Ridge, and Jim Leffew and wife, Phyllis, of Clinton; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Stubbs and wife, Neva, of Rockwood; and by several nieces and nephews, who referred to him as Uncle Bob. The Rev. Curtis Nolan is considered a special friend. A graveside service was Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Stubbs, the Rev. Lively, 77, of Oliver Springs, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Nov. 15, 1925, in Oliver Springs, she was the daughter of Mitchell Buck and Ethel Key Buck. Mrs. Lively was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of Beech Park Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Lively; a son, Daniel H. Lively; two brothers, Harlan Buck and Glenn Buck; and by a sister, Maxine Buck. Mrs. Lively is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Duggins and husband, Bruce, of Oliver Springs, and Deborah Parks and husband, Roger, of Caryville; six grandchildren, Wayne Duggins and wife, Lorie, and Keith Duggins and wife, Lisa, all of Oliver Springs, Michael Duggins and wife, Tonya, Dennis Duggins and wife, Rochelle, and Cristy Carter and husband, Bryan, all of Cleveland, and Kimmie Jarnagan and husband, Matt, of Harriman; and by two brothers, Ervin Buck and Sherrill Buck, both of Clinton. Lillard Lee Keeney, 90, of Clinton, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Baptist Health Care Center in Lenoir City. He was the son of C.J. and Elizabeth Fraker Keeney. He was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church in Clinton. Mr. Keeney worked at Magnet Mills in Clinton, and in later years worked full and part time at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home for approximately 35 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Lucille Stooksbury Keeney; two brothers, Hobert Keeney and Hubert Keeney; and by a sister, Blanche Vandergriff. Mr. Keeney is survived by two daughters, June Keeney Smith and husband, John, of Pikeville, and Gale Keeney Stair and husband, Ronnie, of El Paso, Texas; his son, Dale Keeney and wife, Dottie, of Lenoir City; eight grandchildren, Steve Keeney, Derek Keeney, Crystal Hall, Jonathan Smith, Suzanna Ellis, Sherry Brown, Ryan Harvey and Dana Bennett; 13 great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. John Smith officiating. Burial was to follow at Norris Memorial Garden. Nell McManus Weatherford, 80, of Hamlet, N.C., died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at her home. Born Dec. 4, 1922, in McBee, S.C., in Chesterfield County, she was the daughter of Paul McManus and Ethel Small McManus. Mrs. Weatherford was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Hamlet. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Monroe Weatherford. Mrs. Weatherford is survived by two daughters, Carol Keziah of Oak Ridge, and Kathy Saunders and husband, Jimmie, of Hamlet; four grandchildren, Mica Edenfield of Oak Ridge, Chris Keziah of Knoxville, Amanda Walters of Hamlet and Jason Saunders of Garden City Beach, S.C.; and by five great-grandchildren. Raymond Lee Pollard, 61, of Knoxville, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003. His family said he was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. Mr. Pollard was a member of First Baptist Concord. He was employed at the Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge for 24 years. According to his family, his interests were his family, gardening, photography, genealogy, outdoors, amateur radio, computers and music. He served for six years in the Air National Guard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Lottie Elrod Pollard; and by his stepfather, Taylor Watson. The adopted daughter of John and Mary Thomas of Oak Ridge, she was born Jan. 28, 1959, in Oak Ridge, to Blanche and Lee Otis Loyd. Her parents died when she was a child. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Danielle Woods, and her son-in-law, Chris Woods. She was a member of Woodland Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Kotewa is survived by her daughter, Carisa Woods; and two sons, Josh Condra and Kyle Duncan, all of Oak Ridge; and two grandsons, Daniel and David Woods. She is also survived by five brothers and sisters, Pam Lowery and Sammy Loyd, both of Dalton, Ga., Margie Hall of Florida, and Troy Boyd and Roy Boyd. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Herbert Lee officiating. Howard Juan Rash Sr., 85, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born Jan. 6, 1918, in Ivanhoe, Va., he was the son of David Allen Rash and Sallie Angela Walke Rash. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He came to Oak Ridge in 1945. Mr. Rash retired in 1983 from K-25, where he was a chemical operator. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a 60-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 235 in Ivanhoe. According to his family, he was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and he enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by a son, Howard Juan Rash Jr., who died Jan. 4, 2001. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Vance Price Williams. She received her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Queens College in Charlotte, N.C., and her master's degree from Columbia University in New York. She served with the U.S. Navy before working at Sloan Kettering Cancer Research Center in New York. She did graduate study at Randolph-Macon Women's College, the University of Tennessee and the University of Virginia. Mrs. Williams moved with her husband in 1955 to Lynchburg. After her husband's death in 1965, she taught at Randolph-Macon Women's College, Seven Hills School, Virginia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and Lynchburg College. She moved to Westminster-Canterbury in 2001, where she was active in the Resident Council and various other committees. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church and active in many community events. Mrs. Williams is survived by three children, David V.P. Koh, 71, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Koh was born and raised in Korea. She came to the United States in 1967 to join her husband, Chong Kun Koh, a biochemist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's biology division. She operated Pan East, Oak Ridge's first Oriental Food Store, located in Grove Center, in the 1970s and later the Chinese restaurant, China Doll, located in the downtown shopping center, until her retirement. Her family said after retirement her favorite activities were gardening and reading. In addition to her husband of 43 years, Mrs. Koh is survived by two sons, Alex Koh and wife, Barbara, of New York, N.Y., and Michael Koh and wife, Mihoko, of Irving, Calif.; her daughter, Connie Koh and husband, Glen Trafford, of Canberra, Australia; five grandchildren, Stephen, Sophia, Nina, Zachary and Samantha; and by five siblings in Korea. Born Dec. 19, 1934, in Morgan County, he was the son of Mildred Emma Brown of Oliver Springs and Earl Ruffner, who is now deceased. Mr. Ruffner was a self-employed auto mechanic. He owned and operated Trans-tech Volvo Repair Shop in Oak Ridge for many years. His grandparents, Dave and Bertha Ruffner and Charlie and Bessie Hampton, also died earlier. Born Aug. 10, 1945, in New Orleans, La., she was the daughter of William and Sara Johnston Jernigan, both now deceased. At the time of her death, Ms. Jernigan was employed by PermaDry Systems. She had previously worked at the University of Tennessee Center for Environmental Biotechnology and at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory biology division in Oak Ridge. Before moving to Anderson County, she had worked for several years as a clinical microbiologist at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. She received a bachelor's degree in bacteriology from Kansas State University in 1969 and continued a work-study program in microbial genetics at the university. At UT, she did graduate studies in environmental toxicology and clinical psychology. According to her family, Ms. Jernigan loved animals and shared her home with a dog and two cats. Her family said she was an avid reader and enjoyed movies and listening to music. In recent years, she earned a black belt in Taekwondo, Judo and Hopkido. Ms. Jernigan is survived by a brother, William R. Jernigan, of Knoxville; an uncle and aunt, Harold W. Jernigan and Charlotte J. Keathley, both of Oak Ridge; and by several cousins. Born May 14, 1926, in Long Island, N.Y., he was the son of William and Marie Keen Stein. Mr. Stein was a retired chemical engineer from Martin Marietta Energy Systems, where he worked for 35 years. He received a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Tennessee and a bachelor's degree from the University of Denver. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of United Church, Chapel on the Hill. According to his family, Mr. Stein enjoyed bridge, boating and fishing, and he was a member of the computer club and the power squadron. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Viola L. Stein. Mr. Stein is survived by two daughters, Valerie S. Lawrence Tapp Corbin, 85, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Lakeshore Meadows in Nashville. Born Aug. 6, 1918, in Nebo, Ky., in Hopkins County, he was the son of Forest and Ada Dame Corbin. Mr. Corbin married Mary Elizabeth Townes on Jan. 28, 1939. After graduating from the University of Kentucky and serving in the U.S. Navy, he worked in Detroit at Ford Motor Co. In 1944, he began work with the Manhattan Project at X-10 in the chemistry division in Oak Ridge. In May of 1950, when the analytical chemistry division was created and directed toward the separation and processing of plutonium, he moved to that division and later became assistant director. During his professional career, Mr. Corbin served as co-chairman and chairman of the American Society for Testing and Materials and was made a Fellow of American Institute of Chemists. He also received the Award of Merit, the Harlan J. Anderson Award and the Charles B. Dudley Medal. During the 55 years he and his wife lived in Oak Ridge, he was active in and an officer of the Oak Ridge Country Club. His hobbies included gardening, refereeing basketball games, playing golf, ballroom dancing and traveling. Mr. Corbin was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife of 64 years, Mr. Corbin is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann "Pat" Shelton and husband, Bill, of Nashville, and Mary Tapp "Tappie" Thornton and husband, James W. Mr. Ball graduated from Oak Ridge High School and from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He was employed by Lockheed Martin at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant as a weapons material controller. For the past several years he was employed by the Kroger Corp. and the Sertoma Center. According to his family, Mr. Ball spent a lifetime dedicated to community service, including work as a nursing home activity volunteer, dormitory counselor at Tennessee School for the Deaf, staff member at group homes for Lakeshore Mental Health Institute and staff counselor in adult group homes for the Sertoma Center. Mr. Ball was also fluent in American sign language, serving as an interpreter for friends in the deaf community and in the workplace. He was preceded in death by his father, John M. Ball, of Jekyll Island, Ga. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee Russell; a son, Randy; three sisters, Edith, Lucy and Velma; and by four brothers, Dan, Harry, Leonard and J.W. Mrs. Russell is survived by a brother, Alex Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas; two daughters, Sandra Pride and husband, Kenny, of Ooltewah, and Sharon Stevens and husband, the Rev. Dan Stevens, of Toledo; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and by several other relatives. Wayne Moore is considered a special friend. The funeral was Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Abele Funeral Home in Toledo. Burial followed at Forest Cemetery in Toledo. The family extends gratitude to the staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Georgianna Gilligan Cunningham, 85, of Clarksville, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Spring Meadows Health Care Center following a lengthy illness. Born April 12, 1918, in Ogdensburg, N.Y., she was the daughter of Martin A. and Martha Brandy Gilligan. Mrs. Cunningham was a bookkeeper. She was a volunteer for the Clarksville-Montgomery Public Library. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Cunningham Jr., former Montgomery County property assessor. Mrs. Cunningham is survived by two sons, retired Gen. Frank "Pat" Cunningham III and wife, Annette McKnight, of Clarksville, and Martin "Mike" Cunningham of Atlanta, Ga.; her daughter, Martha Cunningham Wallus of Oak Ridge; a sister, Joanne Beerman of Douglaston, N.Y.; and by nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, in the chapel of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clarksville with the Rev. Mario Burakowski officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville. Thomas N. Cunningham, Jack Mitchell, Wayne Pace, Josh Wallus, Chip Cunningham, Martin Cunningham, Zachary Priest and Greg Taylor will serve as pallbearers. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to Clarksville-Montgomery Public Library, 350 Pageant Lane, Clarksville, TN 37040 or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home in Clarksville.
