He enjoyed video games, working out, and the outdoors. He would go out of his way to help people in need. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Homer and Lida Crandall. DONAHOE, VIRGINIA ELIZABETH TAYLOR - age 87, passed away at Brakebill Nursing Home at 9:30 a.m. October 23, 2003. She was a resident of Oak Ridge and a member of the Trinity Methodist Church. She retired from Union Carbide, K25, where she started as a chauffeur in the early 1940s and finally served several top executives as their secretary until her retirement in the early 1980s. She was a continuous member of the K-25 Credit Union since 1950. In 1978, she served on a committee of twelve co-workers to form the K-25 Retiree Association. She served this organization as President from conception until 2002. For many years she organized and led annual travel groups of employees and their friends to all continents, most countries and major cities of the world. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Women's Club and worked as a volunteer at the Oak Ridge Methodist Hospital Gift Shop. She also helped to organize special events for her company and community. Virginia was preceded in death by her five siblings, including her one sister, Elva Taylor Walters; her husband, Robert (Bud) Donahoe and their son, Robert Edward. She is survived by three nephews, Jim and Gerald Walters and Forest Taylor, all of Knoxville; and two nieces, Tony Ann Taylor Bunnel of Crooked River Ranch, Oregon and Ann Tharp Poston. Kyle, 84, of Oak Ridge, ========================================= Edwin Frederick Phares, 85, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at Briarcliff Health Care Center. Born Jan. 22, 1918, in Red Cloud, Neb., he was the son of Charles Francis and Eurilla Caldwell Phares. He grew up in the town of Guide Rock. Mr. Phares attended Doane College in Crete, Neb., for one year and transferred to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., to complete a bachelor's degree in 1940. Following graduation he joined the Navy ROTC program and received his commission as ensign in February 1941. He went on active duty on the flagship of the Atlantic Fleet, the USS Augusta. Shortly after Pearl Harbor he was reassigned to the USS San Diego, and served in the South Pacific and also on an aircraft carrier, and an Amphibious Command Ship in the same theater of operation, leaving the Navy as a lieutenant commander in December 1945. Mr. Phares returned to the University of Nebraska for graduate studies, and received a master's degree in biochemistry in August 1948. He came to Oak Ridge to work in the biology division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He worked in a group with the late Dr. Stanley Carson on problems and methods of using radioactive and stable isotopes to study microbial metabolism. After 15 years, his family said he was asked to set up a fermentation system to produce cells and their components on a large scale for research purposes. He retired from this position in January 1983. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, served several terms as elder, and was a choir member for 25 years. He was also the church's pipe organ project leader during the 1950s and 1960s, and the completed organ was the first in an Oak Ridge church. The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society was an interest of his from its beginning, and he served as president and then as a board member for a number of years. He was also widely known as a longtime worker at the West Hills voting precinct. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Phares Nelson, of Curtis, Neb. Mr. Phares married Margaret Anderson on Christmas Day in 1941 in New York, N.Y. In addition to his wife, Mr. Phares is survived by two sons, Robert and wife, Peggy, of Knoxville, and Lee and wife, Gail, of Trout Lake, Wash.; and by three daughters; Patty of Miami, Fla., Barbara Rooney and husband, Tom, of Garden Grove, Calif., and Anne of Minneapolis, Minn. The family was well-known and active in the old Graystone Presbyterian Church. Blanche was a charter member and Ruling Elder at Parkway Presbyterian, Sang in choirs and was active in Women of the Church throughout her life. In retirement, she worked with FISH of Knox County and was a Red Cross volunteer at Parkwest Hospital. She attended old Knoxville High School, graduated from Young High School in 1930, attended Maryville College and Draughan's Business School, and graduated from U of Tennessee with B.A. in Education. Blanche was married to Gordon A. Grooms of Seaman, Ohio at Graystone Presbyterian Church, May 24, 1935. The couple met as students at Maryville College. Upon marriage, Blanche Grooms moved to southern Ohio. In 1943 the family moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn, where Mr. Grooms was employed by Eastman Kodak and later Union Carbide. For several intervening years, the family lived in Florida, Moore Haven and then Inverness, where Mr. Grooms was a high school principal and she was the school secretary. Blanche taught in Knox County schools - Galbreath '32-'35 and later at several others including Hardin Valley, Ball Camp, Ridgedale, Cedar Bluff and Karns and retired in 1973. The family purchased and operated a large farm in the HardinValley-Solway community in 1954 and remained there until Blanche moved to Shannondale's Retirement and Assisted Living facilities. In February, 2003, she moved to Little Creek Sanitarium on Northshore Drive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon A. Grooms, siblings ,Eugene M. Wilson, Theron D. Wilson, Marshall A. He was a member of the Davis Chapel Community Baptist Church. Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and brother who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed farming. Charles will be sadly missed by family and friends He was a veteran of WW II. He was preceded in death by 1st wife, Hazel Hatmaker Willoughby; daughter, Linda Sue Willoughby; parents, William Canada and Florence Bowman Willoughby; brother, Louis G. Willoughby; step son, Arnold D. Wilson. Mr. Willoughby is survived by wife, Jewell Willoughby; son, Michael Willoughby, both of LaFollette; daughter, Patsy Goins of Jacksboro; daughter and son in law, Tammy and James Taylor of Duff; daughter in law, Edith Wilson of Jacksboro; 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; brother, Jesse L. Willoughby of Sedalia, Mo.; sisters, China and Martha Ann Willoughby both of LaFollette; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Martin Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Darrell Edwards and Brother Poe Bostic officiating. Interment will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Woodlawn Cemetery with full military honors by the Campbell County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday before funeral services. BILLY MAURICE - age 52, ========================================= EDLIN, JUDY - age 77 of Powell, passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at the Parkwest Hospital. She was a member of the Clinton Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband, Donald; 2 sons, Ron Edlin of Cincinnati, Ohio and Bob Edlin and wife, Mandy of Manchester, Tenn.; 2 daughters, Barbara Tanner and husband, Dale of Powell and Joyce Hall and husband, Tim of Johnson City; grandchildren, Jessica, Sondra and Smanatha Edlin, Nathan, David and Rebecca Hall, Brenda, Sarah, and Daniel Tanner and Richard, Lydia, and Laura Edlin; 2 sisters, Jimmie McDaniel of Murfreesboro and Myrtle Tenpenny of McMinnville; several nieces and nephews and many other family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2003 at the Weaver Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Karns Church of Christ. Tim Hall will officiate. The family will then go in procession for burial at the Oakridge Memorial Park Cemetery. HANSARD, MABEL KIRK - age 90, went home to her heavenly Father, October 20, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph A. Hansard; parents, James E. and Rosa Lee Lewis Kirk; brothers, Edgar and Curtis Kirk; and sister, Georgia Kirk. She was the last surviving charter member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church of Anderson County. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Andersonville and was Past Worthy Matron. She was invited to attend the General Grand Chapter of OES of Milwaukee, Wis. in 1970 and sang in the Grand Choir. Survivors include, daughter and son in law, Marleen and Don Henderson of Greensboro, NC; son and daughter in law James R. and Nancy Hansard of Farragut; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Edna Foster and Alby Fortham.
