I think there may be a book at the historical society in Scott Co. on the Lawson family that has quite a bit of research on the Byrds. They were related to the Lawsons. Hi Robin, I am not researching the Byrd family.I think everyone from Scott Co TN is supposed to be part Indian. I have found that impossible to prove so far. Pate, 54, of Cookeville, ========================================= William Rolfe Gall, 90, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at his home. Born May 20, 1913, in Portland, Ore., he was the son of Charles Love Gall and Myra Rolfe Gall. Mr. Gall grew up in Rogersville and his family said he enjoyed building an 18-foot cabin cruiser, boating on Norris Lake, making red wood lawn furniture, putting together a wooden clock, golfing and growing roses. He attended the University of Tennessee and participated in the cooperative program of work and school. In 1936, he received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation he worked for Tennessee Eastman Corp. in Kingston as an engineer in the instrument department. In August 1937, he received an appointment as a laboratory assistant in mechanical engineering and a graduate student at Yale University. After studying two years toward a master's degree in engineering at Yale, in 1939, he went to the Ethyl Corporation Research Laboratory in Detroit, Mich., as an engineer in training. >From March 1940 to August 1941, Mr. Gall was a laboratory assistant in applied physiology in the Kettering Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati, where he developed instruments for detecting and measuring particulate and gaseous concentrations of pollutants in air. From fall 1941 to fall 1944, he was assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Louisville in Kentucky teaching courses for civilian engineering students, Navy V-12 engineers and various courses for personnel in defense industries in the Louisville area such as production inspectors, aircraft engine operation. >From 1944 to 1947, Mr. Gall served as senior design engineer in the process improvement division in the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant under Tennessee Eastman Clinton Engineers. During this time he also worked on completing a master's degree, and in 1947 he earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Yale University. From 1947 to 1978, he worked in reactor design at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 1952 he graduated from the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. From 1964 to 1978 he was engineering consultant to director, engineering division. Mr. Gall retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division in May 1978. From 1979 to 1988 he was consultant to ASME - Nuclear QA Surveys; The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards; Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc.; Tennessee Valley Authority Nuclear Engineering Division through various contractors. He was a member of ASTM, NSPE, TSPE, Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi. His various honors and awards include ASME J. Hall Taylor Medal in 1972; TSPE Outstanding Engineer Award for Oak Ridge in 1973; ASME Fellow in 1966; Life Fellow in 1978; and Who's Who in Engineering in 1978. Harness and Annie Roberts Harness. A lifelong resident of the area, Mrs. Bass worked as a nanny for the Simon-tov family of Knoxville for 20 years. She was also a dietitian at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge for 10 years. Her family said she enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting, gardening and putting puzzles together. She was a longtime member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, J.C. Bass; a son-in-law, Glen Haney Jr.; and by a brother, Alfred Harness. Mrs. Bass is survived by her husband of 56 years, the Rev. William "Bill" Bass; four sons, Harvey Bass and wife, Katie, David Bass, Jerry Bass and wife, Debbie, and Jeff Bass and wife, Rhonda, all of Oliver Springs; and by three daughters, Trula Justice and husband, Denny, Clara Ricker and husband, Dallas, and Amy Braden and husband, Spanky, all of Oliver Springs. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Dee Harness and wife, Mildred, of Ridgeville, S.C.; a sister, Audrey Seeber of Strawberry Plains; and by several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Adalee Harness of Lake City and the Mashe Simon-tov family of Knoxville are considered special friends. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Charlie Mack Marlow, the Rev. Don Daugherty and the Rev. Spanky Braden officiating. Burial will follow at Mineral Springs Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs. Terry S. Pate, 54, of Cookeville, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at his home. Born Nov. 1, 1949, in Bessemer, Ala., he was the son of James Vaughn Pate of Winchester and Imogene Ellis Pate, who is now deceased. Mr. Pate was a member of First Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher. He was a graduate of the Sewanee Military Institute, the University of Tennessee and the Florida Institute of Technology. A retired lieutenant colonel, he was a U.S. Army engineer and a veteran of Desert Storm. Mr. Pate was also assigned to Tennessee Technological University as a professor of military science. He taught Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at White County High School for the past 10 years. In addition to his father, Mr. Pate is survived by his wife of 31 years, Pam Pate; two sons, Senior Airman Leland Pate and wife, Erin, of Great Falls, Mont., and Eric Pate of Cookeville; and by three brothers, Michael Pate of Georgia, and Bruce Pate and Brian Pate, both of Simpsonville, S.C. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at First Methodist Church in Cookeville with the Rev. John Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Smyrna Cemetery. The JROTC students from White County High School will serve as pallbearers. The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Lazarus House Hospice Building Fund, 260 West 5th St., Cookeville, TN 38501.
