>From The Oak Ridger 19 Dec 2003 James Clifton Farmer, 83, of Oak Ridge, Callie Noreen Hall, 41, of Knoxville and formerly of Oliver Springs, Robert Allen Gray, 51, of Clinton, Bobbie Jean Huff Hoyle, 76, of Clinton, Gladys Buettgenbagh Ketterer, of Wichita, Kan., ========================================= James Clifton Farmer, 83, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Born April 4, 1920, in Murphy, N.C., he was the son of James E. Farmer and Ella Elizabeth Allen Farmer. Mr. Farmer moved to Oak Ridge in 1946. He met and married his wife, Naomi Braden Farmer, after his arrival in Oak Ridge. He and his wife have lived in the Batley community of Anderson County and Oak Ridge since that time. Mr. Farmer was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and according to his family a heavily decorated soldier. He was wounded at the invasion of Normandy and received a purple heart for the injuries he sustained. After being wounded he continued to battle and assisted other soldiers who were also injured. In addition to the purple heart, he received a bronze star, an Oak Leaf Cluster, a World War II victory medal, and many other ribbons and medals. He was employed at the Oak Ridge K-25 site and retired in 1982 after 37 years of service. According to his family, Mr. Farmer was a faithful member of Batley Baptist Church since 1958, where he served as a deacon and was chairman and treasurer on the deacon board for many years. Mr. Farmer was a member and past master of Omega Masonic Lodge No. 536 F&AM. In addition, he was also the past Worthy Patron of the Oliver Springs Chapter 211 Order of the Eastern Star. Thirteen of his brothers and sisters also preceded him in death. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Mr. Farmer is survived by his son, Kenneth Farmer and wife, Gail, of the Solway community; his daughter, Missy Farmer Newport, of Clinton; two grandchildren, Amy Sluss and husband, Frankie, and Austin Newport, all of Clinton; two great-grandchildren, Blake Byrum and Grant Houser; and by a brother, Robert Farmer, of Murphy, N.C. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Howard Robbins and the Rev. Luke Kidwell officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Born July 23, 1943, in Smyth County in Virgina, she was the daughter of Georgia Mabe and Ferd Stroupe. She was raised in Oak Ridge and graduated from Tennessee School for the Deaf. She married Donald Howard England on June 6, 1964, and they moved to Hunstville, Ala. In 1977, they moved to Balcones Village in Austin. According to her family, Mrs. England had a great love for children and worked at the Anderson Mill Baptist Church childcare and Cradles to Kids childcare. She was a member of Great Hills Baptist Church and the Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf. In addition to her husband of 39 years, Mrs. England is survived by two daughters, Barbie Jean England-Russell, of Houston, Texas, and Donna Matus, of Austin; her son, Mark England, of Pflugerville, Texas; a brother, Freddie Stroupe, of Mount Juliet; two sisters, Libby Marshall, of Gurley, Ala., and Glenda Stroupe, of Daisy; and by nine grandchildren. >From The Oak Ridger 16 Dec 2003 Clyde Eugene Mathews, 79, of Oak Ridge, David Arthur Nance, 56, formerly of Oak Ridge, Walter Kenneth Silvers, of Oak Ridge, Jean Cavin Sessoms, 80, of Knoxville, ========================================= Clyde Eugene Mathews, 79, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at his home. Born April 20, 1924, in Sayre, Ala., he was the son of James Jasper Mathews and Amanda Mae Spradling Mathews. Mr. Mathews graduated from Corner High School in Warrior, Ala., in 1942, where he was class president and played on the basketball team. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer escort, USS Roche DE 197. The ship struck a mine off the coast of Japan in September 1945. Several sailors were killed and many were injured, but quick action by the crew prevented the ship from sinking. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He continued his education for many years by taking evening classes and correspondence courses. In 1954, Mr. Mathews married Ouida Brown. They had been married over 33 years when she died in 1987. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Mr. Mathews retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems in 1989 after 36 years of company service, most of it spent at the former Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant. According to his family, Mr. Mathews was an avid reader and also enjoyed traveling, experimenting with electronics, researching his family tree and keeping up with current events. His family said he also loved visiting with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Mathews was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Mathews. Mr. Mathews is survived by his son, Mark Mathews, of Oak Ridge; his daughter, Amy Gogel and husband, Robert, of Buffalo, N.Y.; two brothers, Leon Mathews of Denver, Colo., and Fred Mathews of Dora, Ala.; his sister, Pearl Lively, of Gardendale, Ala.; his sister-in-law, Sally Mathews, of Cordova, Ala.; and by two grandchildren, Stephanie Gogel and Mark Gogel, both of Buffalo.
