From the Knoxville News Sentinal - Sept 30, 2005-- Are you a descendant of the 300 miners who died in Anderson County mine accidents? ---- Group searching for miners' descendents Foundation to sponsor tour of disaster site By BOB FOWLER, [email protected] September 30, 2005 BRICEVILLE - A national search is under way for the descendants of 300 coal miners killed in two Anderson County mining disasters early last century. Those ancestors can fill in gaps in the rich history of the area and perhaps help reunite long-lost relatives, said Carol Moore, spokeswoman for the Coal Creek Watershed Foundation. That nonprofit group seeks to improve living conditions in the isolated, impoverished area and is sponsoring a tour of one mine disaster site next month, Moore said. The Fraterville coal mine exploded in May 1902, and 216 bodies were recovered. The Cross Mountain mine disaster of December 1911 killed 84, Moore said. Five miners survived in one of the U.S. Bureau of Mines' first successful rescue operations. "Between the two disasters, well over 1,000 children were left fatherless,'' she said. "There are probably thousands of descendants out there.'' Moore said word of the search has gone out on the Internet and has been relayed to coal-mining associations and media in other parts of Appalachia, where many survivors migrated. Past tours of the Fraterville Mine site "have brought together many family members who never knew each other,'' Moore said. In response to requests from descendants and history buffs, a first-ever tour of the Cross Mountain Mine site will be held Oct. 15, she said. The free walking tour from Briceville Elementary to the mine site and two cemeteries where Cross Mountain miners are interred will begin at 9 a.m. Bus shuttles also will be available. That afternoon, a free concert will be held from 2 to 4 at Briceville Church to raise funds for the restoration of that historic building, Moore said. For additional information about the tour, concert or national search, contact Moore at 865-584-0344 or [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>. Hello fellow listers, I am trying to locate any information on Rachel (Jordan) Williams/Green. She was my great grandmother's sister, and I have only been able to find 2 pieces of information on her. The first is a Campbell County marriage record to Berry Williams. The second is she is listed as Rachel Green in my great grandmother's obituary. I have tried the 1920 Scott county census record, but the only Rachel Williams listed does not appear to be the age I would need. My great grandmother was born in 1900 and Rachel was a few years older than my great grandmother. I'm guessing that Rachel was born between 1895 and 1900, but I believe in the 1910 census, it is listed as being 1896. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, Nancy Adkins Carroll

I am sorry we were subjected to those emails. I was equally displeased to receive them. I deleted the offending forum queries that generated those emails as soon as I found out but there was nothing I could do about the emails that were already sent to visitors like yourself. Let me try to explain what happened. Anyone can post a query to our Scott Co, TN forum board. When queries or responses to queries are posted on the forum, everyone who is subscribed to the forum receives an email indicating a new query or response is available for viewing. What happened is that some jerk decided to create a dozen or so "inappropriate" queries or responses on the forum. The forum cannot tell if a query or response to a query is valid or appropriate---it just knows that somebody wrote something. The forum then dutifully notifies all the subscribers that a new query or response is available for viewing. As soon as I was aware of what happened, I had to search the entire forum (almost 2000 messages) to find this junk, and then delete them. Trust me, I was not happy. This also happened to other forum boards for other Tennessee counties. We got collectively spamed! Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to prevent it from happening because the forums are purposedly designed to allow anyone to be able create a posting. I can tell you this is the first time in nine years that the board has been spamed with that kind of junk. I occasionally see spam on the forum for cigarettes and various medicines, but again I delete that stuff as soon as I see it. Even that spam hasn't occurred in awhile. The forum is a valuable genealogy research tool. I encourage you to stay subscribed and not let these kinds of jerks "win" by causing you to modify your behavior in ways that denies the fun we all recieve from genealogy research. All I ask is when stuff like this happens in the future, please resist the temptation to respond to the offending query even if you think you are helping by notifying me. This only causes more of the offending junk to fill up our email inboxes. I receive email notifications for each and every post to the query forum so I know when stuff like this happens. I will delete this junk as soon as I read my email--generally within a day. (Remember I too go on vacation or business trips so there may be times when the junk may stay of the forum longer than it should but rest assured I will delete it when I return.) ...tim west... Thank you to all on the list who helped me with info on which of several Oakdales in TN might be the candidate for the birthplace of my Harvey M. CHITWOOD. It looks like it is reasonable to pursue my search in Morgan County. I have one more question. I am trying to locate the most likely concentrations of the surname CHITWOOD in TN. I remember someone on a list once mentioned a site where you can enter a surname and it will show you where there, geographically, that surname is concentrated in the US. Does anyone remember that, who could pass along the addy for me? Thanks again for all the help! Jacqi
