MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!! Gerald Lay Founding Member: 1995 Lay Family Genealogical Association www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/8896 ------------------------------------------ Founding Member: 1989 Campbell County ( TN ) Historical Society ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cynthia Ann Wells" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 21, 2005 2:00 AM Subject: Lay DNA Project update > Hello to everyone, > > We have exciting news on all fronts this evening. This is a long email so > you may want to print it out. There is a lot to pass on. New tests results > are back, new participants have ordered kits, AND a potentially > interesting lead discovered through his DNA results for John W. Lay and > his kin who descend from Rev. William L. Lay. > > John R. Lay, descendent of Isaac and Catherine Lay of Burke Co., NC has > his 25 marker results back. His DNA does not match any of our previously > tested participants and his haplogroup is predicted to be R1b, a common > haplogroup for Western Europeans. According to unproven and unsourced > family tradition, Isaac descended from European Layâ?Ts originally from > Alsace Loraine, a French-German province, and Isaacâ?Ts father immigrated > to America from there. Others say that Isaac was kin to the Campbell Co., > TN Layâ?Ts. However these initial results say otherwise. Either way, we > cannot validate or come to any conclusions until further participants come > forward, test, and compare results. We do have another potential tester > for Isaacâ?Ts line in the works but because John R.â?Ts haplogroup is R1B, > descendents of the German Pennsylvania Layâ?Ts will greatly add to our > understanding of Isaacâ?Ts lineage and point to new avenues for > traditional paper research. I know we have a few members of this email > group who descend from these PA Layâ?Ts so hopefully a suitable > participant can be found. > > Our cousin from Australia, Max, has his 12 markers back. As expected he is > not a match with any of our current participants. What is interesting for > Max is that his haplogroup is also predicted to be R1b, indicating deep > European ancestral roots of the 1,000 years + back range. Max can trace > his Lay lineage in England back to the 1500â?Ts. As I have noted before, > Abraham Layâ?Ts line, also back to England is Haplogroup I, indicating > deep Norse ancestral roots of the 1,000+ back range. I mention all this to > highlight the rich ancestral history of England in how the land was > invaded and re-invaded numerous times over the millennia before having > surnames for identification became common. Max has identified several > different Lay lines in Australia and New Zealand, much like our southern > U.S. Layâ?Ts and has been very diligent in spreading news about our > Project to them. I might add to Max and Murray that participant Russ Lay, > is doing the tourist thing right now in your beautiful countries. Our CT > Lay tester, John C.â?Ts kit has been received by the lab and will be > included in the next batch for testing. Expect his results sometime after > Thanksgiving. John C. documents back to England and is a very important > line for Project analysis and comparing to our known English descendents. > > Onward to John W. Lay, descendent of Rev. William L. Lay. His markers had > no exact or close matches in the FTDNA database at the 12, 25, or 37 > marker levels. FTDNA calls John W.â?Ts haplotype unique. John, did you > know how unique you are? â?~VBGâ?T However, I plugged Johnâ?Ts numbers > into another well known DNA lab database, that has their participants > submit pedigree charts and John W.â?Ts DNA is a very close match with two > males who have tested. The first male is a descendent of a French-Canadian > whose surname could have definitely been Americanized into Lay. There is > family tradition in some East TN Lay lines that talk about a French > Canadian heritage. The second male is a Lay who descends from a William > Lay1, John Lay2, and Taliaferro Lay3â?¦..and down the line. This line is > recorded in TN then into Alabama. Now here is the icing on the cake. > Gloria who descends from a William Lay who family tradition states married > a Taliaferro has been hard at work recruiting a participant from her line > since way back when the Project started. Well thanks to her and newest > email group member Catherine, we have a tester for the William Lay line of > Roane Co., TN. Walter H. Lay will be testing for this line. This > couldnâ?Tt have come at a more important time given the DNA match John W. > shares with this descendent of a Taliaferro Lay. Gloria, Catherine, and > John W.; may want to get up and compare pedigrees while waiting for > Walterâ?Ts results. In the meantime John, email me for further information > on your matches, especially the French Canadian match, so you can make a > research plan. Catherine, could you please email me a pedigree of > Walterâ?Ts direct lineage. > > John W.â?Ts match results and Walter's upcoming test also have huge future > ramifications for our other two testers who need to return their kits to > the lab; Greg and Todd. Greg also descends from Rev. William L and Todd > descends from Big Valley Dave. Gentlemen, your results could be the start > of a breakthrough several East TN researchers have been looking for. > > Lastly, a potential participant from John M. Layâ?Ts line may be ready to > order his kit after the first of next year. We still have a part > scholarship available for a 37-marker kit to a descendent of Charles Lay > of Pendleton District, SC. > > Thanks to everyone for participating in this great group. All this could > easily die and we would be just left with 9-10 strings of numbers. > OR...we could get the bigger picture of how all the Lay families are > related. You do make a difference and our Project has been growing in the > right direction. > > Regards, > > Cynthia Ann Wells > > >
From The Oak Ridger 21 Oct 2005 Alice Contos Asmanes Emma Sue Barton, 71, of Norris, Roberta Williams DeMelas, 57, of Oak Ridge, Shirley Yvonne Krupp, 64, of Oak Ridge, Elvie Powers, 99, a lifelong resident of Middlesboro, Ky. Jacqueline M. Blackburn, 79, of Oak Ridge, Alice Contos Asmanes was born in Orange, N.J., on May 11, 1912, and moved to Oak Ridge in 1945 to be with her husband, Charles, who was sent here, along with many others, as a part of the war effort. The early years in Oak Ridge were filled with muddy roads, limited shopping and food selections, dirty coal furnaces, and government housing with drab interiors. Despite these hardships, unique experiences and strong friendships made Oak Ridge home, and when the opportunity came to leave, the Asmaneses chose to stay. Prior to her marriage to Charles in 1941, Alice worked for Prudential Insurance. After her marriage she devoted herself to her family. Her children cherish memories of their mother being home for them as they grew up. Alice created a stable home filled with wonderful meals, delicious Greek cookies, thoughtful gifts for every special occasion, cleanliness and order. She imparted a strong sense of right and wrong in her children, her kind disposition made her a friend to all, she could always be trusted to keep a secret and to give good advice. She was active for many years in the Oak Ridge Woman's Club, in her children's schools and PTA, several close-knit bridge groups, accompanying Charles at the Oak Ridge Sportsman Club and most recently at the Oak Ridge Senior Center. Alice's passing in the early hours of Thursday, Oct. 20, was sudden and peaceful. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 64 years, Charles; her children and their spouses, Arthur and Joanne Asmanes, Barbara and Byron Lemont and Lynn and Phil Moore. She also leaves her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Donna and Mike Farrar and Joanne; Glen and Kim Thomas and Taylor; Phaedra and Bill Hargis and Lily; Electra and Humberto Posada and Diego and Augustine; Michelle Willm; Jennifer and Travis Wiggins; and Jonathan and Nikki Plaza. He attended Rice University in Houston, Texas, for one year before going into the United States Navy in 1943, where he served as an ensign. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He accepted a position with Fischer and Porter of Philadelphia, Pa. He became Divisional Service Manager covering the Southwestern United States and Mexico from 1947 to 1951. Tom came to Oak Ridge to visit a friend and ended up accepting a position at I & C Division ORNL in 1951. He retired as a Senior Design Engineer in 1997. During the planning stages of the Bull Run Steam Plant, Tom saw a scale model of the project at Norris Dam. He determined that the smoke stack was inadequate. The original level was to be below the height of the inversion level, and it would have filled our valleys with sulfur dioxide. Tom studied the problem, made numerous calculations and wrote to the Tennessee Valley Association (TVA) via letters to the editor of The Oak Ridger, stating his findings. The late William Ergen, then a member of the reactor safeguard committee, became interested, checked Tom's calculations, and presented them to the TVA. As a result, a taller stack was built which resulted in cleaner air for this area. Tom attended Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church for many years. He sponsored children with Save the Children Federation beginning in 1958 and since, many children with Christian Children's Fund and Children International. Until an auto accident in 1998, he was sponsoring 30 children at one time, and continued to correspond with them until recently. Psalm 91: He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. William, I don't have a personal copy of "County Scott . . .", but have read it. It is much like Dusty Bits though its writing style is more traditional. It has more genealogical info than Dusty Bits but does not provide source references. ...tim west... WILLIAM GREEN said the following on 10/15/2005 10:38 AM: >Tim, how about "County Scott and its Mountain Folk"? I have Dusty Bits and agree that is more of a history of the county than a genealogy tool. I would love to have County Scoot and its Mountain Folk if it so much as mentions my ancestors-Wilson, Trammell, Duncan , Taylor and Chitwood. Am I right that this book in not for sale except places like ebay and Amazon? > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Timothy N. I know they might not be Scott Co., but there are plenty of Byrd in Scott Co. that someone might have some information on this family. I am trying to help someone with some Byrd research and I cant quite get it straight. I think the John Wiley Byrd that is listed isnt related to Mollie Jane Byrd. He is with another family. Her grandmother was Mollie Jane Bird (Byrd). She had a brother Wiley. Their Billy Bird/Byrd (born in Virginia) and Nannie Richmond (born in Virginia) died when they were very young and the kids were raised by grandparents in or near Williamsburg, Ky. I found an 1880 census when her grandmother was 16, she was living with some Blakley's, listed on the census as a cousin. James M Blakely 34, Mary 40, Bell, 9, Frank F 4, Mollie Bird 16 (cousin). Birthplace for her parents shows KY. Her grandmother's death certificate lists her father as Billy Byrd and mother as Nannie Richmond. She lists her grandmother and brother as follows: John Wiley Byrd born Nov. 1863 Jackson Co., Ky, died Nov. 1935 Atlanta. Mollie Jane Byrd born 2-6-1864 Williamsburg, Ky. Died 1-18-1937 Warrior, Ala. James Madison Blakely's father was Curtis Blakely, mother Cynthia Bird. If anyone can help make some sense out of this, please email me. Thank you, Christie --------------------------------- Yahoo! Thank you Julie. I go through Rugby going to Muddy Pond but have never stopped there. It is a beautiful place. I would love to go to one of their celebrations. I just never seem to be in Tennessee when they are having anything. Rae Davis-Smith http://www.angelfire.com/tn/sexton/index.html -------Original Message------- From: [email protected] Date: 10/11/05 05:38:50 To: [email protected] Subject: [TNSCOTT] For Your Information-Rugby For those of you who could not access the article about Rugby: --------------------- Appalachian Journal: Re-enacting Rugby's beginning Town relives day it was founded in 1880 by Thomas Hughes By FRED BROWN, [email protected] October 10, 2005 <http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/columnist/0,1406,KNS_359_6819,00.html> RUGBY, Tenn. - Oh, it was a grand collection of folks. About the grandest collection in 125 years at the very same spot where one of America's great experiments in social change occurred. There was Howard H. Baker Jr., former U.S. senator from Tennessee and ambassador to Japan; Jack Irvin, former corporate attorney turned thespian; noted Tennessee author John Egerton; Anna Joyce Alton Herr, a descendant of the colony's first manager; and Amber Brown from Johannesburg, South Africa, fourth great-niece of Rugby's founder, Thomas Hughes. They came together last week with roughly 200 other folks in Victorian garb to remember and celebrate Rugby's founding, staging the event on the same day at precisely the same hour as Hughes and his followers did more than a century ago. Baker, known for his passion for East Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau, was in rare spirits for the 125th anniversary of Rugby's founding and opening day. The famed senator and ambassador did something he said he has never done before: He read a speech. It wasn't his speech, however. It was 125 years old and first delivered by Judge Oliver Temple Perry, attorney for Rugby and Hughes. Hughes, an English author and social reformer, founded Rugby in 1880. He planned the village as an agricultural community with utopian goals. The Shangri-La was to provide work and opportunity for Britain's second sons - little rich waifs with time on their hands. The town, with its lawn tennis and afternoon tea breaks, was dedicated 11 a.m. Oct. 5, 1880. A grand stand of people gathered behind the Tabard Inn, named for Chaucer's Tabard Inn where he placed his Canterbury Tales. "Now have I told you briefly, in a clause, The state, the array, the number, and the cause Of the assembling of this company In Southwark, at this noble hostelry Known as the Tabard Inn, hard by the Bell. But now the time is come wherein to tell How all we bore ourselves that very night When at the hostelry we did alight. And afterward the story I engage To tell you of our common pilgrimage." Barbara Stagg, a descendant of the founders and current executive director of Historic Rugby, put the gathering together last week on the very day of the town's opening. Just as on that day the Tabard rang with speeches, so it did on this day, if only 50 feet away from the Tabard's foundation. On this occasion, however, the crowd gathered beneath the shade of a large white tent instead of on the inn's veranda. Afterward, they dined on box lunches and glasses of wine, which Hughes might have frowned upon, because Rugby was to be a utopia, free of sin and evil alcoholic spirits. "This is just a wonderful day to come here and remember the founding," Baker said before taking the podium. He shook hands with several of his cousins and beamed at the men and women wearing garb reminiscent of the time. He also noted a couple on horseback and a wagon being pulled by stout draft horses. A laptop computer was in use inside the wagon, which drew an ambassadorial chuckle. Representing the clergy to portray Bishop Charles Todd Quintard was the Bishop Charles vonRosenberg of the East Tennessee Episcopal Diocese. After Baker came Irvin, a splendid actor from the Cumberland County Playhouse. He was in fine fettle, as they might have said back then. His sonorous voice rose with the right inflection at the right moment. A slight breeze flitted through his pasted-on silver muttonchops. "I am considering growing my own," said Irvin. "What do you think? "I'm a retired corporate attorney," said Irvin after his lengthy Hughes speech. "But I wasn't put in jail." At 79, he said he enjoys researching Hughes and other Victorian characters to portray them in re-enactments. Amber Brown, the 16-year-old South African, was on loan as an exchange student from the Baylor School in Chattanooga for the day. She is a direct descendant of the Rugby founder and led the group in the song "God Save the Queen" at the program's conclusion. Herr, from Springfield, Pa., and also a direct descendant of a Rugby family, had quite a surprise for the group. She brought a baluster from England's original Tabard Inn, long established and around even before Chaucer pulled up a chair for a glass of ale and frivolity. The relic, she said, had been in her family for hundreds of years, and she later said her grandfather acquired it from friends in England. Stagg said she hopes the Tabard Inn in Rugby, destroyed by fire twice, will be rebuilt, and perhaps the baluster relic will have a place of honor, since it, like Rugby, carries much history. One of the best stories, however, came from a Tennessee storyteller, the writer Egerton of Nashville. In the 1970s, Egerton wrote a book about several utopias scattered about in Tennessee. One of them was, of course, Rugby. He wrote that on the "opening day, Hughes addressed the assembled residents and guests on the veranda of the inn, which the pervious night had been occupied for the first time." On the 125th anniversary, he remembered his grandfather, Graham Egerton. "I came here as a boy in the 1940s," said John Egerton. "My grandfather's father was a British civil servant. My grandfather was born in India (and) came back to England to go to school. His father was acquainted with Thomas Hughes, so when Hughes began the Rugby colony, he told my grandfather that he should go with them. "He did, but he had a terrible accident. He fell under a train, and his right hand was mangled. I only saw one picture of my grandfather. An empty sleeve was across the back of a chair. "He went to law school, married a farmer's daughter and had eight children. He was also in law school at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn., with Cordell Hull. Later when Hull was secretary of state for President Franklin Roosevelt, he made Egerton the solicitor general of the U.S. Navy. "So my grandfather made a breathtaking leap from vagabond to the U.S. government and from the Church of England to the Church of Christ," said Egerton.
