Sunday December 11, 2005 in the chapel of Hatmaker Funeral Home with Rev. Don Daugherty officiating. Interment will be 3:30 P.M. Monday December 12 in Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday night before funeral services. Hatmaker Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of these arrangements. BRUCE, MARY LUCILLE - age 88, of Knoxville, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2005 at the Harriman Care and Rehab Center. She was a member of the Solway Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Melton and Callie Woods Melton, her husband, Cyrus R. Bruce, her grandson, Joe Bruce and 2 brothers, J.W. Melton and R.L. Melton. From The LaFollette Press 8 Dec 2005 Danielle Lilly Bowman, age 25 Edna Ethel Collette, age 87 of Harrogate, formerly of LaFollette Frankie Mae Davis, age 79 of the Clairfield Community Gregory Scott Head, age 37 of Williamsburg, KY Margaret Dean Malicote McNeeley Heatherly, age 63, of LaFollette Charles Sterling Kincaid of LaFollette Ralph Lane age 57 of Jacksboro Ralph Lane age 57 of Jacksboro Earl C. Stooksbury, age 83 Earl F. Williams, age 77 of Knoxville, formerly of LaFollette Danielle Lilly Bowman, age 25 was called to her eternal home by God on Nov. 30. She was born Nov. 1, 1980, in Salem, OH. She was the daughter of Danny and Verna Bowman, Middlesboro, Ky who survive her. She attended Gateway Christian School, and was a graduate of Bell County High School and Lincoln Memorial University, and was a 2002 graduate of Leadership Bell County. An active community leader she was a member of the Bell County Friends of the Shelter, president of the Middlesboro Business and Professional Women's Club, served as a team captain/chair for Bell County's first American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and worked with the Claiborne County Relay for Life, and was a member of the Leadership Bell County Steering Committee, and Cumberland Mountain Fall Festival Committee. She also participated in numerous other volunteer community service projects such as Bell County Repair Affair, Bell County High School Advisory Council, Bell County Domestic Violence Council, March of Dimes Walk-A-Thons, Girl Scouts of America, Bell County Council on Literacy. She also served as director of the Cumberland Mountain Fall Festival Pageant, and was a member of the board of directors of Henderson Settlement. She was an active member of Binghamtown Baptist Church, where she taught the 9-10 year-old girls Sunday School class, and led a young women's prayer group.Her honors include being named a Kentucky Colonel, and at the age of 24, she became the youngest woman ever to receive an award at the 2005 Bell County Celebration of Women. She had worked at J and J Accounting, Bell Whitley Community Action Agency, and had served as Director of Alumni Affairs at Lincoln Memorial University. Currently she was employed at Morgan Keegan in Knoxville where she was being trained to be a stock broker. She was a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and was a loyal and devoted friend to many. She will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Daniel M. Bowman, and Ancil and Edna Jones. Survivors include her parents, Danny and Verna Bowman, Middlesboro; brother, Derick Bowman, Middlesboro; sister, Hannah Bowman, Middlesboro; grandmother, Pat Bowman, Speedwell; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. Memorial services are pending by Reece Funeral Home. Frankie Mae Davis, age 79 of the Clairfield Community passed away Nov. 27 at the Jellico Community Hospital. She was a life long member of the Fonde Church of God Mtn. Assembly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vaitor Davis; son, Bobby Davis; father and mother, Jehew Taylor and Emmie Mathis Taylor; sister, Dorie Taylor. Charles Sterling Kincaid of LaFollette passed away Nov.29 at LaFollette Court, Assisted Living. He was a member of the LaFollette United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church of Paris, TN, where he was a resident for 52 years. He was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers and TVA. He retired from TVA in 1974 after 42 years of service. He was a member of a group of employees of the Army Corps of Engineers that transferred to TVA on August 1, 1933. He is the last member of the group to pass away. He worked with TVA in engineering and various management positions in public health engineering and land management. He was a charter member of the Paris Elks Lodge and Paris Country Club. He served 14 years as vice chairman of the Paris Board of Public Utilities after retirement. He graduated from LaFollette High School and attended Lincoln Memorial University and Vanderbilt University. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Flora Pilcher Kincaid; brother, John Boyd Kincaid of LaFollette. He is survived by his sister in law, Annette Kincaid of LaFollette; nephews, William R. Kincaid of LaFollette and Kenneth T. She had been intermittently ill for many years, but always maintained a positive disposition and a thoughtfulness for those around her. Linda was born in Frostburg, MD on December 13, 1947. She is survived by her cherished family, husband of 35 years and soul mate, Donald F. Barkman; daughter, Michelle M. Barkman; grandson, Aiden J. Barkman and her parents, James R. Lancaster and Bernadine Rooney Lancaster of Frostburg, MD and extended family. She was preceded in death by her brother James R. "Stretch" Lancaster of the greater Cumberland, MD area. Mrs. Barkman had been a member of St. Michael's parish in Frostburg during her youth and recently of St. Mary's in Oak Ridge. She graduated from Beall H..S. in Frostburg in 1965, and earned a B. A. in Education with a French major from Frostburg State University in 1969 and an M. A. in French from Ohio University in 1973. She taught French at Fort Hill High School in Cumberland from 1969 - 1972 and then held teaching and coordination positions while living in Parkersburg, WV from 1973 - 1978. She lived for three years in Louisville, KY before moving to the Knoxville, TN area where she lived in Farragut from 1981 - 2000 when the family moved to Oak Ridge. She taught French at Oliver Springs H. S. for ten years, retiring in 1998 due to medical disability. During her French teaching career, "Madame Barkman" led several student trips to France and always enjoyed encountering her graduates later in life. To those who knew her, she was the best of friends, a truly dedicated teacher, and a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed life while meeting its adversities with exemplary courage. She will be dearly missed. Funeral arrangements are being handled in Oak Ridge by Weatherford Mortuary with visitation from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Sunday, December 11, 2005. An ardent advocate of civil rights, Dr. Cathcart was active in the early days of racial integration in Oak Ridge. Following his retirement in 1984, he continued to pursue a wide range of interests including cosmology, physics and astronomy. He shared his interest in astronomy by writing a column for the Oak Ridger. He was an especially passionate duplicate bridge player. McVay, age 56, of Maryville, Judith "Judy" Ann Meller, 62, of Chattanooga, Frances Seroba Skaggs Shifflett, Sue Lively Stevens, age 66, of Kingston, Tenn., Charles Fugate Eppes Jr., age 94, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Dec. 5, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. After the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Eppes registered for the draft, but due to his hearing problems and impaired eyesight, he was exempt but was listed as "limited service." He was never called to duty. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority, came to Oak Ridge in 1943, worked for MSI and continued his work as an accountant with Barber Buick, Reading Buick, Hoskins Drug Store and Valley Pontiac until he retired on April 1, 1979. He was a founding member of the '43 Club. After retirement, he and Helen devoted themselves to traveling and volunteer work in the community. Mr. Eppes was an avid Tennessee Lady Vols basketball fan and was looking forward to another outstanding year for the team. Born in the family home on Luttrell Street in Historic Fourth and Gill area, Charles attended Old Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee where he played saxophone in junior high school, high school, university bands and several jazz bands. During the school year, Charles worked as an orderly at the Old General Hospital on Riverside Drive and for his father who owned Glen More Clothing. The day school was out, the Eppes family took the train to spend their summer at their home in Kinzel Springs (now Townsend, Tenn.). Charles regularly played saxophone on weekends at the Kinzel Springs Pavilion. They returned home the week before Labor Day. Mr. Eppes was a devout Christian and remained active in his church, First Baptist Knoxville, until two weeks before his death. He was one of the older members of the church having been baptized when First Baptist Church was located on Gay Street. Mr. Eppes was a member of the Sons of the Revolution, the Jamestown Society, the Eppes Society, First Families of Tennessee, and the Welsh Society. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Helen Anderson Eppes; parents, Charles Fugate Eppes and Hattie Roberts Eppes; brother, Clarence Edward Eppes; and sisters, Ethel Eppes Glenn, Ella Eppes Durham Williams, and Hattie Roberts Eppes Robertson. He is survived by his daughter, Loucinda Jane Eppes of Knoxville; son, William Llewellyn Eppes and wife Ann FitzGerald Eppes, of Cary, N.C.; grandchildren, Jennifer Eppes Baker of Wake Forest, N.C., and William Llewellyn Eppes Jr.; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Margaret Baker, Benjamin Scott Baker, Bethany Christine Baker, and Tyler Lee Eppes (born on Charles' birthday March 19); and other nephews and cousins. John Harley Hansard, age 84, of Clinton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at Norris Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was a member of Hinds Creek Baptist Church and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II as a military Policeman. He retired from Martin Marietta after 34 years of service. John was auxiliary chief of police for the city of Clinton, a security officer for the University of Tennessee, and also served with the Anderson County Sheriff's Department. Dorothy "Dee" Marian (Hinton) Marland, 87, widow of Kenneth Milton Marland, of 74 Holly Lane No. 108, Verona, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005. She was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Illinois, the daughter of Carl Reno and Lillian Marguerite Propp Hinton. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Marland had been employed by Staunton Insurance Agency and Rask Florist. She was a volunteer at the King's Daughters' Thrift Shop. She was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed knitting, travel, and bingo. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Staunton. Mrs. Marland was preceded in death by her husband on May 22, 1981. She was born in the town of Paragould, Greene County, Ark., on Feb. 13, 1927, and graduated in 1943 from Central High School in Cape Gireadeau, Mo. She was a member of The Church of the Good Samaritan. She graduated from Cumberland County High School and attended Roane State Community College. Sue was owner and director of Momma Sue's Daycare. She was a member of Morrison Hill Christian Church. She served her community as a Girl Scout leader, girls' softball coach, and a representative and chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee. She also served on the selection committee for Habitat for Humanity. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Stevens; her parents, Albert James and Cora Lively; and her brothers, Frank and Joseph "Brownie" Lively. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Jeff Peterson of Washington, D.C., Vickie Watson of Kingston, and Katherine and David Ballard of Cookeville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Cory and Casey Watson of Kingston; brothers, James Lively of Washington, D.C., Gene "Duck" Lively of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., and John Lively of Dayton, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by her many teachers and daycare children whose lives she touched.
