Mr Elie Massengale, 68, RT 2, River Hill Community, died at 7:40 a.m. Sunday in Unicol County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr MAssengale was a native of Scott-County and had lived in Erwin most of his life. He was a retired miner and a member of Unaka Springs Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Vannie Cross Massengale; one brother, Elijah; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Hicks, Glen Murray, Mrs. Mary Jane Lowe and Mrs. Sylvania West, Oneida; and several nieces and nephews. From The Knoxville News Sentinel 20 Dec 2005 JOHNSON, HERSHELL CALVIN - WHITSON, WILLIAM C. (POP) - age 79 of Harriman, JOHNSON, HERSHELL CALVIN - passed away at his home, December 17, 2005. Born in Decatur, Alabama, December 1, 1938. He came to Knoxville at the age of two. Graduate of Austin High School, Class of 1956 and attended Roane State Community College after serving in the Air Force for four years; he retired with thirty years of service from Y-12 Nuclear Plant where he was employed as an electrician. He was a supervisor with the American Red Cross at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum for many years. He served as a volunteer with the disaster health and safety unit for forty three years. He taught scuba diving at the University of Tennessee Aquatic Center for fifteen years. He volunteered during the summer with the summer camp for children with Down Syndrome. Faithful member of the Tennessee Valley/James E. Derrick Elks Lodge 1152; former member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Preceded in death by: mother, Mable Peebles; two brothers; three aunts; two uncles and grandparents. He leaves to cherish fond memories: loving and devoted aunt who raised him as a son, Phoebe Campbell; sister, Joyce Harris, Chicago, ILL; brothers, Charles E. Norris and wife Margie of Wartburg, Denise Matulik and husband Chuck of Miami, Fla; five sisters, Reba Byrd of Oneida, Carol Spence and husband Lee, Delphia Potter and husband David, Thelma Morgan all of West Robbins, and Hazel Bowling of Mountain View; two brothers, Johnny Foster and wife Wanda and Paul Foster and wife Mary all of West Robbins; 34 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted December 12 at 11 a.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy Church in Sunbright with Bishop A.J. Coalter and Pastor Lee Spence officiating. Burial followed in the Black Creek Cross Roads Cemetery in Robbins. Pallbearers were the grandsons.
