Source: The Scott County News, Oneida, Tenn Dec. 1993 Miss Juana Carroll, 79, of Huntsville, died Sat. Dec. 11, 1993, at the Scott-County Hospital. She was born in Smokey Creek, Tenn. on June 16,1914. She was the daughter of the late William Rich Carroll and the late Louisa Lowe Carroll. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Edith Carroll; one granddaughter, Barbara Carroll; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by two granddaughter: Dillis Perry of Williamsburg, KY and Peggy Smith of Derry, Pa. ; two grandchildren; Jimmy Lee Carroll of Oneida and Charles Carroll of Hopkinsville, KY 11 great-grandchildren; Three brothers: Dillman Carroll of Clinton ; Finley Carroll of Elgin; and Elzic Carroll of Oliver Springs. Several nieces, nephewsand other relatives also survive. Funeral services were held Mon. at the West-Murley Funeral Home Chapelwith the Rev. JIm WEst officiating. The Jack Chitwood Family sang. From The Oak Ridger 26 Dec 2005 Stan Ballard, age 40, of Maryville, Tenn., Euple Haynes Gates Connie Lee Martzin, age 44, a resident of the Dutch Valley community James Rodney Mayton, age 39, a resident of Harriman, Mrs. Nancy Miller Swope, age 92, of Douglas, Ga., Stan Ballard, age 40, of Maryville, Tenn., went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005. He was at home and fell asleep peacefully. Stan awoke to streets of gold that are far beyond any beauty and glory that our human minds can comprehend. Stan leaves behind his loving wife of 17 years, Lisa, who was by his side every step of the way. He also leaves two children who were the light of his life, Chassidy Hope, age 16, and Micah Shane Lucas, age 14. Other survivors include his parents who adored their son, Glenn and Peggy Ballard; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose and Doug Justice and Lanai and Eric Slater; Lisa's parents, who loved Stan as their own son, Mac and Mary McCain; Lisa's brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Sheri McCain; and Stan and Lisa's special friends, Scott and Donna Tallent. A very special thank you to Dr. Guy Garman. You are one in a million. The family wishes to thank all the people who have contributed financially to the Samaritan Hands, which allowed Stan peace of mind. Smith Mortuary in Maryville is handling arrangements. Euple Haynes Gates died December 23, 2005. She was born December 14, 1905, to Robert F. and Mary Jane Jinkins Haynes. Mrs. Gates received a bachelor of arts degree from Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, Miss., in 1926. She married Joe Stovall Gates, June 27, 1927, in Cleveland, Miss. She taught school in Mississippi and worked as a home economist for Farm Security Administration, Department of Agriculture. After her husband's death, Mrs. Gates came to Oak Ridge where she taught at Cedar Hill and Highland View schools. She retired in 1971. Mrs. Gates enjoyed reading, genealogy, bridge, her piano and travel. She claimed to be a newspaper buff, reading four newspapers a day. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she belonged to Book Study Group of Women's Society and volunteered at work day at the church. She was a member of Oak Ridge Retired Teachers Association, Clinch Bend Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Delta Kappa Gamma, Honorary Society for Professional Educators. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gates was preceded in death by her two sisters, Vernece Haynes Methvin and Bobby Haynes Hunter. Mrs. Gates is survived by her sister, Lucille Stevens Brown, and her niece and husband, Mary Jane and Mike Randolph, and children, John, Amy, and Sissy Randolph. Graveside services will be at the family cemetery, Longtown Cemetery, Crenshaw, Miss. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the scholarship fund of the Retired Teachers Association. Connie Lee Martzin, age 44, a resident of the Dutch Valley community in Anderson County, passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville. She was born Nov. 27, 1961, in Johnson City, Tenn. Connie grew up in the Piney Flatts community in Sullivan County, moving to this area in 1996. She has been living in the Dutch Valley community since 2003. She attended Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge. Connie was a 1991 graduate of East Tennessee State University, where she received her degree in medicine, graduating as a registered nurse. She had worked for the State of Tennessee Childcare & Development in the teenage pregnancy division. She had also home-schooled her two children until becoming disabled earlier this year. She is survived by her husband of 15 years, William Martzin, her son, Aaron Martzin, and her daughter, Elizabeth Martzin, all of the Dutch Valley community; her parents, Harry and Deloris Anderson of Piney Flatts; her sister, Katrina Barnett and husband, Johnny, of Bulls Gap; her father- and mother-in law, George and Betty Hackworth Martzin of Dutch Valley; and a host of extended family and friends. Rodney was preceded in death by his father, Harvie Mayton Jr.; by his paternal grandparents, Harve Mayton and Glenna Viola Liles Mayton; and by his maternal grandfather, Lawrence Washington Edwards. Mrs. Swope, a native of Breckenridge County, Hardinsburg, Ky., was born Nov. 14, 1913. She was the daughter of the late Dennie and Nancy D. Hendrick Miller. She graduated from Bowling Green College and, as an employee of the federal government, was relocated to Oak Ridge, Tenn., where she and her husband worked during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project. After her marriage in 1945 to Roger Hunt Swope, she became a mother, homemaker, and public school teacher. She was an active member of the Eastern Star and Lady Elks. After her husband's death in 1980, she moved to Douglas, Ga., where she continued her profession as a substitute teacher, retiring from this at age 83. She continued her calling as a devoted mother and grandmother until her death. Her church membership was at the Oak Ridge First Baptist Church, where she and her husband were charter members. Since moving to Douglas in 1987, she has been active at First Baptist Church in Douglas, where she was a member and co-teacher in the Willie Pearl Davis Sunday School class. She is survived by daughters, Jonni S. Walls of Dallas, Texas, and Annie S. (Curtis) Farrar, of Douglas, Ga.; her grandchildren, Daniel Walls, Merrill Walls, Devon Walls (Justin) Grimes, Chase Lott, Michael Lott, Sarah (Jason) Brown, and Caroline Lott; and special friends and caretakers Debra Jump and Kim Jump. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, at the Douglas First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bryan Lake officiat ing. ELSIE LOUISE DAUTEL - age 88 of Wartburg, born on January 26, 1917 and went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 23, 2005 at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was a life long and devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Wartburg, a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League; graduate of Knoxville Business College. She was an active member of the Wartburg Senior Citizens Club and a member of the Society of the Red Hat Club. Elsie was known as a hard worker all her life. During her career she worked as a secretary for Morgan County Court Clerk Ralph Davis, Wartburg Post Office, Schubert Motor Company, Morgan County Road Superintendent Mitt Dyer, Ford Motor Company and after working at Union Carbide (Y-12) for 19 years, she owned and operated Davis Meat and Slaughterhouse until her retirement in 1989. At that time she continued her hard work and passion for gardening by growing many flowers and vegetables. She was very devoted to all her family and will be truly missed by all of those who knew her. They lived most of their lives in Utah. Bennie returned to Johnson City to care for her mother for several years.
