It is New Year's Eve 1852 and William William Williams, more commonly known as Bill2, sits at his desk by candlelight. He dips his quill pen in ink and begins to write his New Year's resolutions. 1. No man is truly well-educated unless he learns to spell his name at least three different ways within the same document. I resolve to give the appearance of being extremely well-educated in the coming year. 2. I resolve to see to it that all of my children will have the same names that my ancestors have used for six generations in a row. 3. My age is no one's business but my own. I hereby resolve to never list the same age or birth year twice on any document. 4. I resolve to have each of my children baptized in a different church -- either in a different faith or in a different parish. Every third child will not be baptized at all or will be baptized by an itinerant minister who keeps no records. 5. I resolve to move to a new town, new county, or new state at least once every 10 years -- just before those pesky enumerators come around asking silly questions. 6. Tim That is a good idea. I will also make space for anyone who would like to do or already has some research on slavery in our counties. I you have such information, maybe a document with slaves noted on it, copy it or scan it, or just type the details and email to me and I will post on a new page, maybe called 'Slavery or Slaves of Morgan or Scott County', or something like that, whichever county it might be. I will send those for Scott Co., to Tim to post. Be sure to include the owner of said slaves, slave's name, dates of document, etc. Tim, any other details you can think of that will help put this together??? Let us know... Anna, Probably a more interesting project for Morgan Co rather than Scott Co simply because Scott Co had so few slaves. Morgan Co had a significantly larger number. I believe, at the height of slavery, Scott Co only had at most 40 slaves. I'm not trying to make light of slavery in Scott Co--its wrong where ever and whenever it occurred. The records would be more abundant in Morgan Co and thus probably easier to draw familial relationships. I've seen very few references to slaves other than the federal slave schedules and some ancillary references within the federal population schedules (census records) for Scott Co. However, with this said, I will be happy to make some webspace available for someone who wants to take the task on for either Morgan or Scott Co. ...tim west... From The Knoxville News Sentinel 29 - 30 Dec 2005 BALDWIN, ALMA ANNA PENNINGTON - 84, MILES, ETTA RACHEL "WILLIAMS" - age 97 of LaFollette GIBBS, ETHEL - age 100, of the Marlow Community HERRELL, HENRY WESLEY - age 58 of Clinton, ROSS, MRS. OPAL - age 96 of Sunbright, TATE, PARIS SUTTON, JR. - age 81 of Knoxville, a native of Scott County WARD, EARNEST - Age 72 of Clinton, Tn. BALDWIN, ALMA ANNA PENNINGTON - 84, left behind her physical body at Scott County Hospital on December 26, 2005, to be present with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for all eternity. She passed from this life peacefully with her husband, two children, seven grandchildren, and many of her 24 great grandchildren present at her bedside. Born in the coalfields of Scott County on January 9, 1921 to L.C. and Anna Pennington, who operated a general store in the Norma Community, she was the fifth of their six children. She graduated from Norma High School in 1938 where she was an honor student and basketball standout. She met the love of her life and best friend, Hubert G. Baldwin, when she was 17 at a community water well a few miles from her home where she had walked to get drinking water for her family. Hubert, then 20, was sitting in a tree swing with another young lady and Alma taunted him by threatening to throw a cup of the water on him. Hubert told her that if she did, he would come over and give her a big kiss. She took the dare, he made good on his promise and a truly remarkable relationship began. Hubert was then working as a store clerk for the Straight Fork Coal Company in the company commissary. He later moved to the Zenith community to work in the commissary in the mining camp there. Not to be separated from his cherished Alma, he picked her up in a borrowed car on September 10, 1939 and with twenty dollars in his pocket they went to Whitley City, Kentucky to be married. After paying for their marriage license, he had two dollars left over for the preacher and, thus, their life together began. They spent their next four years together in Zenith and the first of their beloved daughters, Rose Hughlene, was born in 1940. Alma and Hubert moved to Oneida in 1943, to a home given to her by her father and mother and they have resided there ever since. In 1943, she gave birth to Sharon Lynnette and her family was complete. She served her husband as the consummate helpmate during their life together and they never spent a night apart from one another throughout their marriage of 66 years. She provided a warm and loving home for Rose and Sharon and ably assisted her husband while he and his two sons-in-law, Roger and Jack, built the largest coal company in Tennessee, West Coal Corporation. Her passion in life was to share with everyone she met the saving grace offered by a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. As a result of her bold stand for the Lord, many she encountered along the way were saved and have gone to do great things in preparation for His Kingdom. She was a bible scholar and especially loved to study eschatology (the biblical study of end time events). She taught a mixed couples Sunday School Class at Bethlehem Baptist Church for many years and her students relied on her extensively for Godly counsel and advice. looking for the parents of Willard Goodman that died: Sept. 1986 Scott-Co. Tenn Susie
From The Knoxville News Sentinel 218 Dec 2005 BALDWIN, ALMA ANNA PENNINGTON - 84, HUBBARD, EDWARD - age 62 of LaFollette, STEPHENS, HAZEL MARIE LAY - BALDWIN, ALMA ANNA PENNINGTON - 84, left behind her physical body at Scott County Hospital on December 26, 2005, to be present with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for all eternity. She served as the matriarch and pillar of her family and her untold love, kindness, concern and generosity in the ways of her Lord are indelibly etched in the very beings of: her two precious daughters and their spouses, Rose West and husband Roger and Sharon Lay and husband Jack; and her adoring grandchildren and their spouses: R. Gregory and Lisa West, Todd Lay, Chris and Terry West, Hugh and Jaretta Lay, Scarlett Love, Faith and Tony Lambert, Dustin and Jodie Lay, and Miche and Cris Rose, all of Oneida, Tennessee; and great grandchildren: Matthewe, Tyler, Stacia, Dylan, Brittany, Kelsi, Shulyn, Nash, Pyper, Dannon, Lucas, Nicholeah, Houston, Ali, Zachary, Carmen, Jacob, Benji, Corey, Chance, Carrington, Dallas, Mallory and Chaya. She was preceded in death by: brothers, James, Clifton, Harold and Dan and is survived by one sister, Helen Rector of Huntsville, Tennessee and two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Pennington and Maxine Pennington, along with many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Her presence will be missed by all, but her spirit for life and her love for family and God will be a legacy for generations to come. Celebration of Life services will be conducted Thursday, December 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Lon Chenowith and Rev. Chester Morgan officiating. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, December 30 at 11 a.m. at Carson Memorial Park.
