I am searching for information on a James MORTON who was listed on Rutherford County's 1810 census. The current info I have on James MORTON came from the new book, THE RECONSTRUCTED 1810 CENSUS OF TN, 33,000 LONG-LOST RECORDS by Charles A. Sherrill. I am trying to determine James MORTONs age in 1810 and whether he might have removed from Rutherford County to Anderson/Union County by 1830. In the 1830 Anderson County census, there is a James MORTON family listed. At the time of the census, James was between 40-50 years of age. After the 1830 census, I can't seem to find him. Thanks so very much. Nina Morton T.
Dear Nina, I am a descendant of James MORTON of Rutherford Co., TN. This James Morton was b. in 1756 and d. in 1808 in Rutherford Co., TN. He was James Blythe MORTON. He was said to have been the youngest Lt. in the Revolutionary War. He owned about 600 acres of land and slaves. His wife was Katherine Wells b. 1758, m. 1776. Their son was James Wilson Morton, b. 1785 and 4 Oct. 1843 or 1845. He married Nancy Newsom, b. in 1780 and she died in 26 January 1869. The old home place is still standing and is on Morton Road about one mile to the right of Smyrna. My grandmother Mary Morton was b. about 1810 and she was their daughter. I hope this helped you. James Blythe Morton and his son James Wilson Morton stayed in the same place until their death in Rutherford Co., TN.
