It was used in Okla, Ark and a few other states. The majority of the states had a soundex. I don't know why it was used for only a few states. The purpose of a miracode is exactly the same as a soundex, listing family etc. Here's what you'll find at the TOP of a miracode card. The county name is in the top left corner. The 9 digits in the upper right corner look something like this xxx xx xxxx. You can interpret these numbers as follows: the 3 digits on far left mean nothing. The middle 2 digits are the ED number (enumeration dist), the 3 or 4 numbers on the right are a column number which can be found on a census page immediately left of the name of the head of house. So you see, the miracode does not provide a sheet number (page number), however with the county name + the ED number and the column number....you can still find your family. I'm not into census records on CDs since I live near a branch of the Natl Archives, so can't answer your question on that. And why all states do not have this whatever it is???and can the actual census records be bought on CD-rom's??? Betty >>
