Sherri, You might check with the Rutherford County Clerk's office. I've not been there myself for research purposes, but someone there should at least be able to point you in the right direction if the records are not kept there. They are located at 319 North Maple Street (just a couple blocks north of the square) and their phone number is 615-898-7798. If they don't know, try the librarian in the Historical Research room at Linebaugh Public Library. Linebaugh's number is 893-4131 and they're located at 105 West Vine Street (a block south of the square). Good luck! Rutherford is one of only two counties in TN for which the 1810 census survives. There are no Rowlands (one Rollins), but a nice assortment of Burlesons p 12 Wm Burlison 10100-20100 p 16 Moses Burlison 32010-20010 p25 David Burleson 01311-01001 p28 John Burleson 12010-00010 There is an 1803 petition to form the county which has a lot of names on it; no Rowland or Burleson. Joseph Rowland was a militia officer in 1823. These last two items were published in an early Rutherford Co Historical Society publication. Can someone please tell me how to access these two records located in the Record Book Index: Carter, Alexander -Dec’d- Book 24,pg359 Carter, Alex -Dec’d- Book 27,pg193 I am looking for the family of Alexander Carter & wife Rhoda, both b:NC about 1798. They appear on the 1850 Rutherford census with daughters Polly Ann & Elizabeth. Am I right in assuming the notation above "Dec’d" means "deceased" and the two entries are Wills? Thanks for your help, ~Elizabeth
I am looking for information or contact on children of two brothers that moved to Missouri from Tennessee when the were young . I believe they are the children of Jim and Jermina (TODD) FORD of Tennessee. I believe that there is a connection to Cannon County, Tennessee too. They had several sisters and brothers besides Bill and Jim. The names I have for the brothers were Jess, Luther, Hiram, and John. When sister I know for sure was Frances and she married George SENSIBLE. Hiram married Alice B. HACKETT. there is possibly a sister named Izora Billey FORD (no proof). Both Bill and Jim married two of the daughters of William and Mary (WINFREY) EARP of Rutherford and Coffee Counties of Tennessee. Both girls were born in Missouri but moved to back to Tennessee after the death of their father during the Civil War. Their mother and the three girls went back to live with relatives in Coffee County, Tennessee. At some point they met Bill and Jim. Other names mention of the sister's marriages FLETCHER, DRAKE or DUKE. Sarah "Sallie" EARP married James Thomas "Jim" Ford date and place of marriage is unknown. William Jasper "Bill" FORD married Will Ann EARP the youngest of the three sisters. Sarah/Sally would be the first of three known wives of Jim FORD. The other two wives were Pearl Mae (NEIL) McGAUGH? and Mary Margaret FENNER Mary Margaret's first husband was possibly a MOORE. Children of Jim and Sarah children were James Luther, William Oscar, Mattson Jasper, John Calvin, Frances Elizabeth, and. Estella FORD. Children of Jim and Mary Margaret were Jess Claude, Ernest Ervin, Florence May, Flossie Marie, and Lester FORD. Jim and Pearl had one son, James Neil FORD. There was possibly a fourth marriage to Jim but I do not have any information on it. Jim FORD was born on October 5, 1868 around Memphis Tennessee and died on June 21, 1961 in Excelsior Spring, Missouri at the Spa View Rest Home. Will Ann EARP married J. W. MORGAN in Coffee County, Tennessee on December 10, 1879. They had one son, Joseph Franklin MORGAN. At some point, Joseph took the FORD name because it was on his death certificate. William Bill Jasper "Bill" FORD would be Will Ann's second husband, they were married somewhere we believe in Tennessee around May 1885 or 1886 and they would have the following children Mary Rebecca, Cleveland, Mollie "Mattie", Leroy, Ella, Evelina P., John Samuel "Pete", Virginia, and possibly another unnamed female FORD. Bill and Will Ann died within seven months of each other. Will Ann died around the time of Bill and Will Ann's 56th wedding anniversary. Will Ann died May 7, 1941 in Grand Pass, Saline County, Missouri. Bill was born on August 27, 1866 in Middleton, Hardeman County, Tennessee and died December 1, 1942 at the Carroll County Hospital, Carroll County, Missouri. I would lie to find more information on the two EARP/FORD marriages but any information on these families would be appreciated. Spelling of names may vary. Thanks in advance Thanks again Jackie .

The graves are of soldiers who were wounded in the battle of Murfreesboro Dec.31, 1862, and Jan. I, 1863. Hundreds of wounded and dying men were rushed to the hospitals and private homes in Chattanooga. Everyone who had a home was asked to prepare for wounded guests as the hospitals could not care for all. Every one of the 887 names is that of a Confederate soldier wounded in the battle of Murfreesboro, who died in a Chattanooga home or hospital. The first number on Col. Watkins' list is 142 and the first date is Feb. I, 1863. There were 141 illegible names when Col. Watkins made his list. These were doubtless of men who died in January, 1863, and were buried in the section of the original cemetery which was nearest the Tennessee River and more frequently washed by it during "high water." The 887 burials were made in four months; the last, No.887, is dated May I, 1863. This was an average of more than six funerals a day and the facilities of the little village must have been severely taxed. Under the circumstances it is remarkable that the record of deaths was so carefully preserved. More info can be found at http://www.utc.edu/commdept/ConfederateCem.html I was also wrong. The soldier found in 1999 was found on the side of Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, not Lookout Mountain. More info on this can be found at http://commserve.utc.edu/Funeral/funeral.html
In 1867 the bodies of 887 soldiers who had died in Chattanooga Jan. 1 to May 31, 1863 (the weeks immediately following the battle of Murfreesboro), were moved from a cemetery close to the Tennessee River, where they had been temporarily interred, to the Confederate Cemetery. A board at the head of each grave was marked with the name of the soldier, his state and his command, and a number. Col. R. L. Watkins copied the names and prepared the following list. It is probable that when the headstones were hastily made-six or seven each day for four month the names were frequently misspelled, in the case of difficult ones at least. This explanation accounts for the many peculiar and infrequent names on the list. Searchers for names should allow for variation in sound and spelling. Many of the wounded in the battle of Murfreesboro were sent to Chattanooga by train. Some of them died en route and others in the station immediately upon arrival. Homes and hospitals were filled with other soldiers who lingered, some a few days and some for months. Col. Watkins began his list with the number 142 and the date Feb. I, 1863. It is presumed that 141 men died in January and were buried in the very low ground where the water washed the graves and the wooden boards, and that the names were not decipherable when he made his list in 1867. The last number "887" is dated May 31, 1863. The list bears this inscription: "Presented to the Confederate Memorial Association March i8, 1876, by R. L. Watkins, who assisted in obtaining this record in 1867 and participated in removing the dead to the graves where they now lie. This was when the Confederate Association was first organized. Each grave was numbered and named on headboard as this list shows and was easily identified. "R. L. Watkins." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Note from Bonnie White, April 2001: This cemetery is in Chattanooga, beside UTC and in very good condition. A couple of weeks ago, a Civil War era soldier was moved into this cemetery. His body had been found several years ago on the side of Lookout Mountain and forensic research showed him to have died during the Civil War. Both Northern and Southern Re-enactors were on hand to honor this comrade. To view a listing of soldiers buried here please go to: http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Grounds/7235/chattcsacem.htm
