Dear Nina, I am a descendant of James MORTON of Rutherford Co., TN. This James Morton was b. in 1756 and d. in 1808 in Rutherford Co., TN. He was James Blythe MORTON. He was said to have been the youngest Lt. in the Revolutionary War. He owned about 600 acres of land and slaves. His wife was Katherine Wells b. 1758, m. 1776. Their son was James Wilson Morton, b. 1785 and 4 Oct. 1843 or 1845. He married Nancy Newsom, b. in 1780 and she died in 26 January 1869. The old home place is still standing and is on Morton Road about one mile to the right of Smyrna. My grandmother Mary Morton was b. about 1810 and she was their daughter. I hope this helped you. James Blythe Morton and his son James Wilson Morton stayed in the same place until their death in Rutherford Co., TN. The current info I have on James MORTON came from the new book, THE RECONSTRUCTED 1810 CENSUS OF TN, 33,000 LONG-LOST RECORDS by Charles A. Sherrill. I am trying to determine James MORTONs age in 1810 and whether he might have removed from Rutherford County to Anderson/Union County by 1830. In the 1830 Anderson County census, there is a James MORTON family listed. At the time of the census, James was between 40-50 years of age. After the 1830 census, I can't seem to find him. I was just reading the message and wanted to comment. Woodfin use to be Woodfin and Moore. Woodfin and Moore split business and Mr. Moore took all records and they were destroyed by fire. Woodfins recently had a fire but I believed all those records were saved. If you could search the newspapers on film at the Linbaugh Library you might find the death notice in the paper. I live very close to the Mapleview Cemetery in Smyrna, but do not have a list at home. I am in almost same boat. My ggrandmother Mattie Belle Arnold Womack died in l909 and she does not have place of burial on her death certificate either. C.Shipley
Is there a site for Rutherford county that allows you enter an address and find the current owners or past owners? I noticed on another rootsweb email site that a county in another state has that information online. Just wonderin'... Thanks! May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow
Thanks Deb! You're peach! Joyce .
Joyce, There are 2 Woodfin Funeral Chapels in Rutherford County -- one in Murfreesboro (they had the fire) and one in Smyrna. I don't know how much, if any, of their records were lost in the fire; I've been afraid to find out myself. I was born and raised in Murfreesboro and many of my relatives had their funerals there. In fact, the fire occurred on February 10, 2000 -- the day after my aunt's funeral. But I digress... Since your gg grandparents are buried in Smyrna, they were probably at the Smyrna chapel. Just in case, here are the phone numbers for both locations: Woodfin Funeral Chapel Woodfin Funeral Chapel New Lascassas Pike/State Highway 96 203 N. Lowry Murfreesboro, TN 37130 Smyrna, TN 37167 615-893-5151 615-459-3254 I don't have the exact address for the new Murfreesboro chapel, but it's not far from the old location. The old location was at 915 N Tennessee Blvd. (at the corner of Tennessee Blvd. and Greenland Ave., across the street from MTSU). I hope this helps in your search. It does list the funeral home that handled the service (WOODFIN) but I did a search and found that they'd had a bad fire and now I'm afraid I won't be able to find the information. Does anyone know if their records were saved? How about a phone number so that I may call them? My gg grandparents are buried somewhere in SMYRNA and their names were HENRY JONES HARRELL and NANCY BELL HARRELL. HJ Harrell died in 1937. Does anyone have a recollection of seeing their grave?
