    1. [TNRUTHER] Lyon Cemetery Restoration
    2. Mari B. Byers
    3. Anyone from these families? This sounds very interesting. Mari From: Robert Lyon To: mbyers@tngenweb.org Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2001 10:31 AM Subject: Lyon Cemetery Restoration Dear Mari, I am hoping you can find a place on your website regarding the work we have planned to restore the Lyon Cemetery off Cripple Creek Road. Hopefully it might spur the interest of some who have ancestors buried there or who are interested in cemetery restoration. A brief note about the project follows. First, in researching my family history, I was led to Murfreesboro to seek the grave site of my 3rd great grandfather, Rev. Nathan Lyon, who came to Rutherford County in 1814. I found his cemetery with approximately 30 burial sites, in need of cleaning, fencing, and general restoration. The site is on private property. Many of the Lyon family are buried there along with other surnames, including Caffey, Carnahan, Donnell, Neely, Nisbett, and Youree. After contacting the land owner, he gave us permission to come in and do a restoration project. We are looking for any who are interested in helping to attend a planning session on Wednesday, October 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the Cripple Creek Presbyterian Church on Cripple Creek Road. The Wednesday night planning session will include an exchange of family information on people buried at the cemetery, the opportunity to sign up for clearing, fencing, tombstone restoration, and a plan for continued maintenance. Work will begin on Thursday and continue through Saturday, weather permitting. We look forward to seeing this project done to honor a group of early Rutherford County pioneers and to assure that their burial place will be preserved. Thanks for considering this for your website. My response cannot be posted, due to its vulgarity ----- Original Message ----- From: Archives Dept To: 'Kevin Kelly' Sent: Monday, October 08, 2001 1:23 PM Subject: RE: 1821 circuit court case Mr. Kelly; The Rutherford County Archive has in its holdings the circuit court records of the county, 1900 to the mid 1940's. It is not known if the loose records of the circuit court before 1900 are still extant. These records, however, are not open researchers as they have not been processed, i.e. straightened, cleaned, filed. These records have been taken out of the metal boxes in which they were stored by the court, but not much has been done with them beyond that. We are currently working to process the loose chancery court records which date to the early 1800's, and is therefore a much larger project. When this project is finished we will begin the same process on the circuit court records and yes, they will at that time be microfilmed. The Rutherford County Archive has a small staff and a very limited budget. Due largely to these factors it looks as if it will be some time before we be able to begin processing the circuit court documents. Rutherford County has a beautiful courthouse that underwent a major renovation in 1996. The Rutherford County Archive takes up three rooms on the third floor of the courthouse. 3. Would appreciate some help from the groups. I have been trying to obtain a photocopy of a circuit court case. On March 20,1821,Turner Pinkston sued my ancestor,Arthur Pearce and William Barfield. Pinkston won the case. Pearce and Bar- field did not pay the $20 or $30 someodd judgment. So Pinkston, went back to court and got an order for the Sheriff to take over the property. A writ fierci facias. Stokely D Pearce, one of Arthur's son, successfully bid on the 250 acre property by paying the judgment, etc. This,I have from a booklet that Edythe Whitley wrote on my Pearce family. I e-mailed the Rutherford Co Archives, they advised me to write to Ms Eloise Gaither,(Rutherford Co Circuit Court Clerk) The response was,"These records would be in our archives and the gentleman who takes care of these, informed me that it could be several years before they start processing any of the Circuit Court information. His phone#615-867-4609. Add Rutherford County Courthouse Suite 301,Murfreesboro" Neither the Mormons nor the Tenn State Archives have the 1821 circuit court records of Rutherford County. Help Thank you,Kevin Kelly,St Louis
