    2. Marie...and others. How true! A prime example of mistranslation of names due to the 19th century writing style. My grandfather was named Travis (given name), but is often read as Francis, and sometimes as James. I find it helps to look at numerous examples of a given census taker's recordings as an aid to deciphering their recordings. Jim

    3. Just thought of another thing which has given me difficulty with this Daniel Pittman and David Pittman line. In cursive handwriting the names David and Daniel can be easily mistaken for each other. Sometimes the humps of the V in David will be mistaken for an N. Also if the EL is squished together in Daniel or if they fail to close the top of the last "d" in David. Those of you with either a Daniel or a David in your research might want to search for the other if at first you fail to find your David or Daniel. There are some good articles online about deciphering old writing. Just to name a few you might check the following. Hope that helps someone out in their research Marie B. http://www.amberskyline.com/treasuremaps/oldhand.html http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/syft/begintip/syftmg0047.htm http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/76_reading.html?Welcome=1006222829 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [TNRUTHER] Re: Daniel Pitman Family in 6th Dist
    2. Marie Beckman
    3. Anne(and listers) I have thought that too. Daniel was listed in the 1860 Census as being 60 yrs of age and a shoemaker was listed as his occupation. Its possible that he may have help make shoes for the war. he would have been around 62 or so when it started. Like I said in my earlier post I am fairly sure that David served since he was pretty much the "prime" age for a soldier. I have seen both listings for Daniel Pittman(and variations) and David Pittman thru the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors site but have not looked over the records for those. I think I can narrow it down to those units which were formed in the Caney Fork area as the Pittmans were in Dekalb Co. Prior to the war. I feel like it must have been something pretty big to take them away from where they had lived for about 20 yrs. For David and his wife to also be living there too must have been a pretty big thing. His wife and her family were deeply rooted in the Dekalb Co TN area(Adcocks) Looks like Comfort and family were in the 6th Civil Dist. P.O. listed as Florence. Is there anyone on the list who knows about what that area was like esp during war and in 1870 when I have proof in the census saying that my Pittman/Pitman line was living there. Also looks like their neighbors were The Tucker and the John Edwards Families of the 6th Dist. Would love to know more about that area. Thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate any and all help. --Marie Beckman --- Renshaw <renchfam@sdcoe.k12.ca.us> wrote: > Comfort could have come to Rutherford Co., because > Daniel was wounded > in the war. 3. Comfort could have come to Rutherford Co., because Daniel was wounded in the war. I have read that at the end of the war, many families went to their wounded to care for them. My family also came from NW Georgia to Rutherford Co. at this time. My ancestor, Jeremiah Ramey only spent the last 5 months of the war in the army but, he died of the effects from the war. Check military records for your Daniel. He may have been wounded and Comfort went to care for him. He could be buried there also. Anne

Just a matter of figuring out what caused the move to Rutherford Co. Comfort and husband Daniel were in Dekalb Co. the two census prior to 1870. As near as I can figure, Daniel passed away some time between 1860 and 1870 and that prob. along with the war prompted the move for both David and his mom Comfort. In 1880 Census Comfort is no where to be found so she must have passed on. David and family are back in Dekalb Co. TN in 1880 and I believe some of his brother's and sisters families moved on to Gibson and Crockett Counties. I've not been able to find where Daniel and Comfort were buried. David is buried at Young Bend Cem in Dekalb Co. TN Thanks again Marie B __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Find the one for you at Yahoo! 3. Does anyone on the list have access to the 1870 Census of Rutherford Co. TN. I'm trying to double check and make sure I have the listing right for Comfort Pittman & family who I believe is listed on page 298 and also for her son David Pittman who is listed in his own household on the same page. Comfort and her husband Daniel Pittman lived in Dekalb Co. TN in the 1850 & 1860 Census. I believe that Daniel must have passed on sometime between 1860 and 1870. I also believe that David (son of Daniel and Comfort) was in the Civil War ( prob. in Company A, 16th Tennessee Infantry Regiment) and that caused them for some reason to move to the Rutherford Co. Area. There is a Dave Pittman listed on Company A, 16th Tennessee Infantry Regiment's roster and it was made up of alot of men from the Dekalb Warren and Putnam Co. Area. In the 1870 Census which I'm trying to verify what I have written down shows Comfort living with her daughters Jane and Bettie, her son Lee, and Jane's children. I believe Jane married a man also named Pittman. In the 1880 Census I do not find Comfort but I find David back in Dekalb Co. TN. Where he lives until his death in Feb. of 1922. If anyone can check the 1870 Census on page 298 and tell me if the Pittman Households are there and who are in them I would really be grateful. Martha was cousin to Ophelia Burrus who married Joseph Benjamin Palmer in 1854 (grandson of Joseph B. Johns & Martha Vaughan thru their daughter Mildred Ann and Wm. Palmer). 3. Hi Joe, There is a book at Linebaugh Library in Murfreesboro on the history of healthcare in Rutherford County. The Rutherford County Historical Society put it out. It's located in the historical section. You can email Charles Nored and ask him if there are any copies left of this publication. His email is clnored@home.com Charles is a very nice gentleman and is with the Historical Society. I did a lookup for the name Baskette in the first volume of "Annals of Rutherford County" but did not find anyone by that name. That just means he wasn't there before 1828.
