    3. Possibly. My Mary Fagon was born about 1788. What info I have on Mary comes from Judy Richie. "Her parents were John S. Fagan (b. abt. 1740, possibly Co Meath Ireland) and Patricia Martha Lanier. In John's will he named two daughters. Both were married, but it's not known whether they married in Virginia or Tennessee. According to the Lanier Book by Louise Ingersol, sisters Mary Kelley Fagan (b. ca 1799) and Sarah Jones Fagan (b. ca 1795) were both born in Virginia. Mary and Sarah married REED brothers." I believe that it was Mary who married my gggrandfather. They were in Rutherford Co. TN in 1830, but I can't find them in 1840. Then in 1850 Jesse and Mary show up in Marshall Co KY. By 1865, they had moved to Johnson Co. IL. 2. Raymond Ross
    3. Still looking for information on Frederick Barfield, was in Rutherford County 1805 to 1822. Reportedly died in Madison County in 1828 but no estate or land records there. Lived near Key Corner, Dyer County, in area that became part of Lauderdale County. Courthouse in Dyer burned, no estate records for that time. Lland records exist but I find nothing on Frederick. However, his son, George C. Barfield did own and sell land in Dyer County. Frederick could have gone to live with him. Raymond R. 1. Re: [TNRUTHER] ROLL CALL - McCullough
    2. Deborah, James D. McCullough, married Mary Davis as his 2nd wife. They later separated and he married a third time. He was the son of Alexander McCullough (b. 15 Aug 1770; d. after the 1850 census and before 8 Nov 1850 Rutherford Co., TN) and Susannah Nance (b. 10 Aug 1781 VA; d. after the 1850 census, Rutherford Co., TN). He moved with his parents, Alexander and Susannah (Nance) McCullough, to Rutherford Co, TN from Henry Co., VA about 1815. James D. McCullough died 20 July 1892 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro. James D. and Mary (Davis) McCullough's daughter Isabella married Henry A. Crouse on 5 Oct 1857 in Rutherford Co., TN. Below is an excerpt from a book written by William R. Rushing (now deceased.) Hope this helps. I know very little about Mary Davis and her descendants - any information would be appreciated. Thanks. Rebecca Christensen THE DESCENDANTS OF ALEXANDER McCULLOUGH OF HENRY COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1983, by William R. Rushing, pp..9-10 "James D. McCULLOUGH (my great-grandfather) was born Feb. 13, 1807, in Henry County, VA. He lived and died on the old home place about six miles out of Murfreesboro where he farmed and acquired other land. He was considered well off when he died as he left each of his children a farm or other valuables (see will in the Appendix). He was married three times, first to Catherine G. McFADDEN, Dec. 16, 1830, in Williamson County, Tennessee. She must have died or run away; there is no further reference to her in his family Bible. Their issue: Susan Carolina, Sara Jane F. Jimmie's second married to Mary DAVIS Feb. 13, 1838, was unhappy. They had one girl, Isabella, and separated. He is reported to have said she was so mean he couldn't live with her. James' third wife was a widow, Nancy C. YANDELL ZACHARY, born Jan. 31, 1818, who had one daughter, Martha. James and Nancy were married Dec. 26, 1843, and James raised Nancy's daughter as one of his own. James' and Nancy's issue: Mary Ann Elizabeth (Mollie), John Wesley, James Porter, George Dilliston, Nancy Alice. Alexander, Sr., died intestate and his son Isaac was appointed administrator of the estate. James evidently acquired the old home place of Alexander, Sr., as well as other of his holdings from the other heirs. Alex, Sr., died July 20, 1892 [this is incorrect -- it is James D. McCullough's death date], Susannah sometime later. James died July 20, 1892, and Nancy died Dec. 31, 1888. The latter two are both buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee. The 1860 census of Rutherford County lists Nancy Alice as 3 months old; also as a part of James' household a Nancy NEWMAN, age 58, Frank, age 20, and Cat (female), age 19. The latter two are assumed to by Nancy NEWMAN's children. Who she was is not known, possibly a nurse for the baby and help for Nancy McCULLOUGH who is listed as age 41, somewhat old for bearing children. James is listed as age 57. The 1870 census lists a William, age 13, and a James WHITE, age 48, the latter born in England,as part of the household. No relationship is known for the two." 1. [TNRUTHER] McElroy, Witherspoon, Youree, Summers
    2. My Adam Calhoun McELROY & wife Jane CUNNINGHAM moved to Rutherford Co. from Prince Edward Co. VA in 1814 - their son Matthew Lile McElroy married Minerva Jane WITHERSPOON in Rutherford Co. 1837. Minerva Jane was daughter of Joseph Witherspoon/Jane BOND. Jane Bond was daughter of William Bond/Frances (probably WINFREY) who lived in KY just north of the TN/KY state line. My SUMMERS ancestor was William Summers b. 1817, son of William Sr. and wife Ellender - and was grandson of George SUMMERS/Malinda who were originally from Prince Georges Co. MD and then Iredell Co. NC before coming to Rutherford Co. William (b 1817) married Elizabeth Isabell YOUREE, daughter of James YOUREE and an unknown first wife (Elizabeth Isabell was born before James' marriage 1822 to Dorothy Hardeman and is listed as one of James' heirs in land records). James Youree was the son of Francis Youree/Elizabeth who were in Mecklenburg Co. NC before moving to Rutherford Co. sometime around 1800. Will be more than happy to share what I have (including confusion!) with anyone else researching these or related families .... Summers were connected through marriage several times with JACOBS, LOWE and others from Iredell Co. NC. Yourees seem to have been related to PORTERS & HARTS. LaVerne

    1. [TNRUTHER] Re: Kate Carney diary
    2. Earlier today I saw Mari Byers' note about the site of the diary mentioned above. I went to the site, just intending to do a quick "Control F" to look for my surnames, but made the mistake of reading a couple of entries and got hooked. Mari, thanks so much for mentioning this. Although I didn't find any of my relatives (that I know of), I did find the solution to a little family mystery. On two different dates the diary mentions someone being referred to as a "secessesh" or a "sesesh". My great grandfather was known to everyone in the family as "Sash" a nickname he had gotten when he was a little boy during the civil war. Supposedly he was picked up by a group of Yankee soldiers when he was about 8 or 9 years old, who wanted to know his name and what he knew about Southern soldiers hiding in the woods. All he would tell them was "seesash", even though, the story goes, they held his bare bottom over an open fire. After that, he was known as Sash, but evidentially none of the grandkids ever asked why! For the past few years we have speculated different things he might have meant, but after reading Ms. Carney's diary, I now know...and I also know it was a commonly used term in the area at the time. Thanks so much again for sharing the site. I really enjoyed the read about such a spirited young lady and was sorry when the diary ended. Melissa in Colorado (with the Tennessee Roots!)
